Rose wakes up in a field, blood pooled on her windshield. She has no idea where she is or how she got there. But her daughter’s boyfriend is missing.
Tyler does this though. He breaks it off with Olivia, disappears for a few days, and comes crawling back. Surely this is just another round of that nonsense. Surely the blood was just from an animal.
But weird things keep happening to Rose. At work, one client no-shows and leaves her hanging, while another files a false complaint that she propositioned him for sex. Her house is broken into, but seemingly nothing is missing. She loses her keys but finds them in the fridge. Is she cracking up? Is her husband gaslighting her in order to trick her into surrendering the house in their impending divorce? Or is there something more sinister going on?
As things get more desperate, Rose confides in her old friend Ellie. But Ellie’s brother Jason is home on parole and he and Rose have a complicated history. And that’s not to mention her past with Ellie’s twin brother Wayne. Rose was there when he died and the memories haunt her.
The more Rose searches for answers, the more questions she finds. Why is her husband hiding an illegal stun gun? Who was the man at the hotel? And where is Tyler?
With unexpected turns that could steer any driver off course, this book will make you question who to trust at every milepost.
Though this was a very interesting and engaging read, I find that the more I think about this story now that it’s over, the more I find issue with the plot. Mostly, the things that happened to Rose seemed to only happen to her for plot’s sake, which I suppose can be said for a lot of novels. But it’s much more compelling when things happen to a character because of the character’s own folly. As it is, Rose was a victim throughout the course of the novel, which seems a missed opportunity for deep dramatic irony because she was so clearly culpable for events that occurred long ago. Still, the novel stayed on my mind and left me questioning everything and everyone until I guessed whodunit correctly at about 3/4 the way through.
3/5 stars. Thank you to Netgalley, publisher Bookouture, and author Kerry Wilkinson for the advanced review copy of this novel.

First off, I'm a huge fan of Kerry Wilkinson but.....this left me a little disappointed. I can always count on Kerry for delivering a suspenseful mystery. So if your looking for a new author to try, I recommend one of Kerry's books. For me, this one kind of dragged and I kept waiting for that moment where I would get hooked. The book started off promising. Rose wakes up in a field with blood all over her front car with no idea how she got there and where the blood came from. Sounds good right? As the story progresses many strange things start happening to Rose. She begins suspecting her soon to be ex-husband of "planting" things to make her seem crazy. She doesn't know what she's done nor does she know what's happening to herself. I just didn't think enough was happening to Rose that made me care what had happened in the long run. There was something missing for me that usually makes me turn the pages fast. I love Kerry's books so there won't ever be a problem of me reading more of his. This just happens to be my least favorite of his.
*Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved Two Sisters and The Girl Who Came Back so I was a very very happy reader when I was approved for a arc of Mr Wilkinson`s latest stand alone thriller Last Night. And oh boy what a brilliant thriller this is,packed full of twists, red herrings, secrets, betrayals and misconceptions.
We follow Rose Denton`s desperate quest to find out how and why in the early hours of the morning she woke up in her car,in a field. There was blood on the windshield and the bonnet,it wasn't her blood and there were no signs of anything or anyone that she could have hit with her car.We also learn that Rose and her husband Davidn are separating, one of Roses`s old friends has suddenly started hanging around outside her house.Tyler, the boyfriend of Rose and Dan`s daughter Olivia has mysteriously disappeared and Rose is having problems at the IT sales company where she works. We also get occasional glimpses into Rose`s past, the things she used get up to when she was Olivia`s age and the group of friends she used to hang out with.Rose was a wonderful, vivid character who had a wicked sense of humour,I found myself laughing out loud a number of times at her witty thoughts. She had no memory of how she got from the hotel where she was on a business trip, into her car and wound up in a field miles away.As she begins to uncover secrets and lies she begins to doubt herself and the people around her.
This is a gripping, riveting, page turner that had me hooked in from the first sentence right through to the unexpected, omg final page.I would happily recommend Kerry Wilkinson`s books to anyone who loves a well written, thoroughly enjoyable thriller.
Last Night is a stand alone novel by one of my favorite authors. I adore Wilkinson’s Jessica Daniels series and enjoyed the other stand alone of his that I read, Two Sisters.
The novel starts with Rose waking in her car in the middle of the night. She’s in the middle of nowhere, there’s blood on the hood and windshield but no sign of any dead deer or other creature. She can’t remember how she got there. Maybe because I’m at an age when my memory SUCKS, I love narrations where the main character has no memory of what has happened. Things go missing and then reappear and she had no idea why. She gets fixated on the story of a boy who’s gone missing from the hotel where she was staying, obsessed really.
Wilkinson has done a fabulous job of detailing the marriage where the only feeling left is contempt, where it’s all Rose can do to tolerate being in the same room with Dan. She knows him too well and that’s not a good thing. And likewise, her relationship with her 18 year old daughter is strained. And should she be happy her daughter’s no good boyfriend has also gone missing?
The new big thing in books seems to be an unreliable narrator. This book does it better than most. There are things here that are hinted at; you’re allowed glimpses into the past. Wilkinson does a good job keeping that sense of tension and fear going. Rose has no idea who could be behind what happened, if anyone else is even responsible. Maybe she’s at fault. But there are quite a few others that might be. “Trust is such an important part of a person’s life. It’s intrinsic to someone’s well-being that the people in his or her life can be relied upon.”
Wilkinson draws out the story in a convincing way, little bits at a time. I thought I had a handle on how this was going to play out, but I was wrong. I love it when an author manages to fool me like that.
My Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.
A book full of twists and turns, with an excellent twisty ending.
Things were not so rosy in the Denton household. From the outside it seemed all was well, but what happened on that night? She crashed her car, or did she? They got burgled, or did they? Things in the kitchen drawer weren’t there, then they were. Is it coincidence, a set-up? Rose is turning into a paranoid wreck. It drew me in, keen to get to the bottom of each family member, their friends, their colleagues.
It’s the first book I’ve read by this author, but I’ll be seeking out more from him for sure.
Thoroughly recommend this book, a read filled with tension!!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the review copy in which I give my honest opinion.
Last Night by Kerry Wilkinson keeps the reader guessing as to what is going on and why. Some edge of the seat moments. Found myself several times wanting to tell the "heroine" not to do something. I was given an early copy to review.
I was looking forward to reading this book being a fan of the author's Jessica Daniel series but unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations.
I found the characters impossible to like, the drip feeding of secrets and the way that Rose chose to conceal everything infuriating and really all a bit pointless
I was delighted to receive a copy of this from NetGalley and the publisher to review. I love Kerry Wilkinson's Jessica Daniels series and have read most of them. This was a very good read. Rose wakes up in a field in her car which horrifyingly is covered in blood. She has no memory of what has happened, only that she was supposed to be staying in a hotel overnight after meeting a client. She drives back home, washes her car and spends the next few days scouring local news in case there has been an accident which she might be responsible for. Meanwhile her teenage daughter is looking for her boyfriend, Tyler, a layabout who Rose does not like. As if this isn't bad enough, things start to go wrong at home: missing work passes, keys thats sort of thing. And someone breaks in. As in all good psychological thrillers Rose starts to doubt her own sanity. There are a couple of suspects and for once I didn't see the perpetrator coming. Recommended for all those who love psychological thrillers. I really liked it but I do prefer the more straightforward crime stories that he writes.
This is the first book i have read from Kerry Wilkinson for quite a while and as ever it is a great read.Rose wakes up in her crashed car with blood all over the front but she has no memory of getting there, what follows is a psychological thriller that had me gripped from the first page as Rose is forced to confront her past as well as her rocky marriage to Dan and her fractured relationship with her daughter Olivia caused mainly by her dislike of her boyfriend Tyler who has gone missing. If you enjoy this genre of book then this is an excellent book to read and you won't be disappointed,a great 5 star read !
Wow.. this book went in so many directions, i never knew who to trust.m And what an ending!!
First book from this author will be looking for more.
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for a early release copy of this book.
What to say about this book. The twists and turns, the author was wonderful about keeping you guessing as to who was the "bad person" in the book. I didn't even pick up who it was until the author told me in the story. It is a gripping read that you may have issues putting down.
If you like thrillers that tend to make you think one person to be the bad guy only to find out that it isn't him then this is the book for you! I recommend you read it if you like thrillers. It is a very good book.
A fantastic thriller that will keep you guessing. The ending completely surprised me. Fans of The Girl on the Train will enjoy this book.
Hi, having not read any of Kerry Wilkinsons previous books I was looking forward to ‘Last Night’....and what a night it was for the main character, Rose....she ‘comes to’ in her car, in a field with blood all over her car and no idea where she is or why her car is covered with blood... and so the story and intrigue begins and continues throughout this book, I use the word intriguing as that sums the book up, it really is an intriguing read....each revelation adds another 3 questions that need answering and the book builds and builds and answers more and more until finally you realise what really DID happen ‘Last Night’ and why it happened and what the consequences will be!!!!
Its fast paced but also gives you time to get to know the characters and what makes them tick, a very mixed bag of wonderfully created husbands, wife’s, kids, best friends and others that all fit superbly into this story
I loved it and felt was reading a really good book that didn’t peak and trough but was consistently excellent, dare I say there was a twist??? Yep there is a really good one
Thoroughly recommended 10/10 5 stars
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the Publishers, Bookouture for this review copy given in exchange for an honest review. Also thank you to Noelle from Bookouture for organising the Blog Tour!
Rose Denton wakes up in the early hours of the morning, behind the wheel of her car. It has crashed off the road and she’s in a field. There is blood on the windscreen but there’s no sign that she’s hit anything or anyone. The last thing she remembers is being in a hotel room on a business trip, but now she’s in her car miles from the hotel. She can’t remember anything, so makes her way home and decides to keep quiet about it. But what really happened last night?
Another book to get excited about! I love Kerry Wilkinson’s books so was pleased to be able to read this one. The book begins with a huge mystery – what the hell happened to Rose Denton last night? Waking up in a crashed car with no recollection of what happened is weird enough, but to then find blood all over your windscreen which isn’t your own blood and no sign of hitting anything is just plain scary! How would we react in that situation? Would we have done things differently to Rose? Obviously Rose is confused and perhaps makes the wrong decision – you don’t really get to find out until much further into the book. The suspense of what actually happened keeps going throughout the book until the big reveal right towards the end! Rose also finds herself on the receiving end of other strange incidents and various scenarios go through not just Rose’s mind but also the reader’s!
It’s a great story, but I didn’t expect anything less from this author! The story is fast paced, gripping and there are so many red herrings it was hard to keep up. I didn’t have a clue what was going on until nearly the end and believe me, I went through every explanation! I loved the way that almost all of the characters seemed guilty of something, you just really didn’t know who to trust!
Another big thumbs up to Mr Wilkinson! Can’t wait for him to come up with another one!
Yet again.....What a fantastic book Last Night by Kerry Wilkinson. His books just get better and Better. I love the way he writes and this book will keep you gripped right till the end. If you want a book that is fast paced, lots of twists and turns, that will keep you guessing, this book is for you. Plus, WoW what an ending.
In the early hours of the morning Rose Denton wakes up behind the steering wheel of her car. She has driven into a hedge and is in a field. Rose gets out of her car and finds Blood on her bonnet etc. How did it get there? Did she hit someone or a animal? She checks the car and around the area and can not see anything. Rose checks herself and she finds no cuts etc. So who's blood is it? Does she really want to find out the answers?
Panic sets in. Rose remembers being at a hotel on Business but Where is she now? How did she get here, she is miles from the hotel? Why did she leave the Hotel in the early hours of the morning? Did she check out?
Rose drives home and parks her car in the garage and hoses the car down. Rose finds no damage.
Life for Rose has become very complicated recently as she and Husband Dan is in the middle of separating and needs to find the right moment to tell their daughter Olivia. But, Olivia is dealing with her boyfriend Tyler who has gone missing. He has left no note, text etc for Olivia.
Has Rose killed Tyler? She still can not remember anything about last night!
Things for Rose does not get any better Is she going mad?
This book will keep you gripped and guessing till the end. Its a very gripping and tease read. I just loved it.
If I could give it more than 5 Stars I would, 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Big Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
A secret from Rose's past seems to be coming back to haunt her. She wakes up early in the morning in her car in a field with blood on the front of the car and no memory of what happens. Her daughter's boyfriend disappears, strange things happen in their household. As Rose tries to figure out what happened to her and her daughter's friend tensions rise among her and her estranged husband and other members of the community. Who would abduct Tyler, who has something against her? Is it a neighbor, her ex, a former friend Jason who was recently released from prison? Everything builds to a climax and is explained but there is a bit of a cliffhanger on the last page. Very suspenseful read.
Rose Denton`s marriage is on the rocks, her daughter is at a difficult age with a boyfriend, Tyler, Rose can`t accept is right for her.
Her job is not going well, her sales are falling so after a fruitless drive to a hotel to meet a client who doesnt show, she has a drink.
Her next memory is waking in her car in the middle of a field. Theres blood on the windscreen but no other damage and no trace of who or what she has hit.
She makes it home, hoses down her car and trys to remember whats happened and deal with her daughter, Olivia, who`s in a state as Tyler has disappeared without trace.
Life`s not easy for Rose, the more she trys to discover the truth the more people she comes to distrust.
Has she killed someone, was it Tyler`s blood on her windscreen.
There are plenty red herrings and so many twists and turns you can`t guess what the truth will be until the very end. Always the sign of a good thriller.
A tense and gripping read, I loved it.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
Another great book by Kerry Wilkinson. I enjoy the books by this author and this is no exception. Plenty of twists and turns to keep me hooked and I couldn’t put it down. Bring on the next book!!!
Last Night is a gripping thriller! The writing is superb. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough! So much drama, so many twists! This is a must read!
Wow this had me captivated! I could hardly put the book down, I was so into finding out what was happening the book went by in a flash and OMG that ending! A really really good book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend this book it is full of drama, tension and angst. Kerry Wilkinson at her best with this stunnging psychological thriller. I had to get my breath back at the end!
