As I began this book I was amazed by how much I was gripped and was excited for the story ahead. Unfortunately I struggled to then get into it as it appeared to drag and just wasn’t getting to the point of the story. I began to feel no empathy for Sasha a pathologist who’s maternal instinct told her the baby she was looking at was not hers. The story was so frustrating in places but I plodded on. At about 80% I was gripped again and could not have seen how the story unfolded. The writer did keep to a medically correct storyline which was a pleasure to follow and the writing style was good.
This is quite a dark and intense thriller with the heroine, Sasha, in a terrible situation: she believes that her baby has been swapped for another baby in hospital. There are many twists and turns and I wanted to find out what happened. I did find the novel made uncomfortable reading at times and it’s definitely not uplifting, but it’s original, well-written and compelling. I wouldn’t have wanted to read this when I was pregnant!
This story opens with Sasha waking up after the birth of her baby via emergency caesarean. She discovers that she gave birth to a baby boy despite being told she was expecting a girl. When the midwife calls her by the wrong name she cant help but think that perhaps there has been more mistakes and maybe just maybe she gave birth to a baby boy after all. A feeling that intensifies when she is taken to meet the baby everyone says is hers but she feels no connection to.
I'm a little unsure about how this would play out in real life, how quickly steps would be taken. I'd like to think that Dr's and nurses would be a little more understanding of the situation. I imagine its fairly natural for a mother to feel a little disassociation between her and her baby when the birth is under similar situations as Sasha's, and I felt Sasha was mistreated, in the sense they quickly declared her to be suffering from postnatal psychosis and rushed to treat her accordingly. However as the story progressed and we learned more about her past, her relationship with her absent mother, information the dr's had but she didn't, I began to realise there were other reasons behind their diagnosis. And the more we learned the more I too began to think she was wrong...
My only issue with this story was the ending, I felt like everything was rushed, almost as though the author had a limited amount of words to use and not enough to give the ending it deserved.
This is the first novel Fox has written, and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
Wow what a fantastic read a complicated family with lots of underlying problems make this a book you can't put down from fertility issues and mental health problems all the characters have troubles what happened in the maternity hospital is brilliantly written with a surprising twist can't recommend this book enough a must read
Sasha awakes in hospital to find she has had an emergency c section & can’t wait to see her brand new baby girl .... Only to wake up and find out you had a Boy and you are sure your baby has been swapped !!\
Mother instincts go a log way in this book and make every word a page turner never knowing if she is right or wrong it will keep you guessing till the very end .... I really enjoyed the pacing of this book and all the characters were well written .... cant wait for Susi Fox's next book thank you for the copy to review
What a fab read! This was a real page-turner, with well-written characters and a great but predictable storyline. As a mother, this was quite a disturbing read but enjoyable at the same time.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought the plot might be a little predictable, however was surprised to find that it was easy to read, fast paced but also engaging.
I’d definitely read more from this author again.
This book was ok. I was interested in the idea of a baby being switched at birth but found the feyness of Sasha too hard to believe. She just knew the baby wasn't her. It just seems unbelievable to me, especially from a doctor who would be grounded in science. She seemed so paranoid as well. I think this was explained in the book (childhood trauma?) but the book didn't make enough of an impact on me for me to remember. Not a great read.
After years of failed attempts at having a baby, imagine your horror when you wake up in hospital to find your baby has been born early, via caesarean section and isn't the girl you were expecting!!! Follow Sasha as she battles her own demons, the hospital and all those who think she is mentally unstable in her search for the truth. Full of twists and turns, this book is a must read and is truly unputdownable.
After waiting years to get pregnant you finally are, but then something that isn’t planned for happens. Your judgment starts being questioned, you’re not insane right, or are you? At times my heart was in my mouth while reading this, I couldn’t put it down! So far, this is one of my top reads of 2018! Definitely an edge of your seat mystery thriller!
What a fantastic book. A chilling thriller that you have to finish in one go. Excellent book and highly recommended!
I'm not sure about Mine, it is a story about a woman, Sasha, who wakes up after going into labour early, shes had a caesarian and shes not in her approved hospital and her husband is not there and neither is her baby, but when she eventually does see him, Sasha is convinced that the baby everyone is showing her is not her baby as its a boy and she was sure she was expecting a girl. The more she protests the more opposition she comes across, her husband tries to convince her she's wrong as do the hospital but Sasha is convinced its not her baby and she will stop at anything to get to the the truth. The idea was good but I did find it dragged on a bit until the end which seemed rather rushed and implausible. But not a bad attempt at a debut novel.
What a great read! Read in one sitting as could not put it down. The exquisite writing style draws you in and keeps you turning the pages.
You think you have the story sussed then a totally unexpected twist takes it in a different direction entirely.
Can’t wait to read more from this author!
A gripping psychological thriller full of drama and suspense, which kept me turning the pages.
Sasha, a doctor, has been looking forward to giving birth to her longed-for first child. It’s all she’s ever wanted. She and husband Mark can’t wait to welcome their baby daughter into the world. But after an emergency caesarean, Sasha is convinced that the baby boy she’s handed isn’t hers. Why won’t anyone believe her? It’s a mother’s instinct, isn’t it? Hospital mistakes happen, don’t they? Or is she delusional?
The story is told in first person, which I loved, with POVs from Sasha and Mark, giving us a real insight into their worlds.
A great medical drama that kept me guessing throughout. I thought the twisty ending, which I didn’t see coming, incredibly clever and executed brilliantly. Enjoyed!
A very difficult & uncomfortable subject matter for a first book so hats off to Susi Fox for that. Unfortunately I felt the characters to be flat and stereotypes in a few instances. Good pace and I could never say I knew what the ending was going to be.
I absolutely adored this book. Although slightly predictable throughout, the ending shocked me and overall I really enjoyed reading this. I loved all the characters, they had so much depth to them. I loved the way the story kept flitting between current and past to learn more about Sasha and Mark. Overall fantastic
From the start of reading this you will not be able to put it down. I was in that terrible state of wanting to know what happened but not wanting to finish it either. It’s well written and it will have your pulse racing. Is the Mum losing her mind? Is she really right .....did someone steal or swap her baby? You can’t not read this!
When Sasha Wakes up after having a cescarean all she wants is to be to taken to see her baby girl but through her mothering instincts she thinks the baby is not hers. Mine is a brilliant psychological thriller that will keep you gripped until the very end, I enjoyed every minute of this book.
My daughter gave us our first grandchild a few months ago so this was particularly poignant for me. Would I have known if she’d been swapped [at birth] probably not if I hadn’t been there, scary huh?! So when Sasha insists that she has the wrong baby can she trust her ‘maternal instincts’ or has a traumatic birth led to some kind of mental breakdown? Who can she trust? Surely her husband and the nursing staff wouldn’t lie to her would they? An enjoyable book that keeps you guessing, recommended.
I did find the book very slow to get into. However , I’m glad I persevered. This story tells the tale of Sasha, a doctor who finally has a baby after many years of trying. But she’s convinced the baby isn’t hers. Is she mad? Is there a cover up? You won’t know until the last few pages!!
