Just because I didn't like it doesn't mean someone else won't.

My 4* review for It's Always The Husband by Michele Campbell.
"Kate, Aubrey, and Jenny. They first met as college roommates and soon became inseparable, even though they are as different as three women can be. Twenty years later, one of them is standing at the edge of a bridge . . and someone else is urging her to jump. How did things come to this?"
This book was in some ways the thriller it was described as because in places it was full of suspicion, suspense and the lives of the 3 ladies once they had grown up and married was shrouded in mystery. However, the first part of the book where they met at college and got up to mischief with drugs, alcohol and parties felt a bit more like a YA book and was a bit boring for me. However, once we met Kate, Aubrey, Jenny and their husbands 20 years later the book got more interesting and I was more invested in their lives and couldn't wait to find out how we got back to one of them standing on the fateful bridge that changed everything 20 years before.
I found Kate the rich spoilt kid with rich parents and used to getting everything she wanted in life a selfish, heartless and spiteful friend and certainly someone I would not want to share my room or my life with. I warmed to Aubrey and Jenny, but even they had moments where they annoyed me!
The book really got going in the last few chapters where everything unfolded and then wrapped itself up to the surprise ending, which to me was the best bit of the book. It kept me reading, kept me guessing and I was pleased to have read it even though parts of it were a bit contrived.
It's always the husband is a Top Ten Times thriller written by Michele Campbell and published by HQ. Whilst at the prestigious Carlisle college they became known as the Whipple Triplets. Kate, the "it" golden girl, Aubrey and Jenny forged an inseparable friendship. They participate in a scandalous freshman pran. 20 years later they are still all firm friends until the prank raises its ugly head and consequently one of them is murdered.
Advertised as a thriller this is more of a mild suspense novel. I found the spelling and grammatical errors slightly irritating. Although the premise and plot are fantastic the execution didn't live up to expectation. The first part of the book dragged whilst the second half seemed rushed and the plot crammed in. I found it hard to get to the end of this novel. I couldn't find a connection with the characters as they seemed under developed and unlikable. I am ambivalent about this book and wouldn't rush to reread it anytime soon.
I received this book via Netgalley and HQ in exchange for an honest review.
It's Always the Husband by Michele Campbell was an unusual psychological drama detailing the lives of three main girls, Aubrey, Kate and Jenny who met at college and stayed friends for life. At least that's what they'd like you to believe, from the outside looking in. Really, they were thrown together and kind of stuck with each other.

Relationships are tricky things, some best friends at school can totally be your worst nightmare, but if you're too weak willed to get out of such a toxic relationship, before you know it, you're stuck. I mean, if you've invested so much time and energy in a friendship, why would you give it all up? Especially now, when you're all adults in your 40s, shouldn't things be different?

When I say this story was unusual, what exactly did I mean by that? This is just my sort of book, I love psychological thrillers, but unfortunately I just didn't feel for any of the characters at first. The story started slow, and I don't think as much detail about their elite Carlisle college life at the beginning was needed. Maybe the odd flashback to something important, to show how the "Whipple Triplets" had pledged to be friends forever, when in fact it's instantly obvious to the reader they're actually frenemies from the day they first met. Again, I love books featuring frenemies, but there was just something about that whole first section which did not enthral me at all. However, as we moved on through to their later years where we meet them as adults, the pace picked up a bit, and like the blurb says, when someone is standing at the edge of the bridge and someone else is urging them to jump, I wanted to find out who and why! I didn't get this far into the book to just give up!

We do get flashbacks every now and then and the suspense does pick up somewhat. I kind of knew payback was going to happen to the bitch of the group, but the unexpected twist at the end was interesting. There was just something clunky about the way the whole book was put together, like either I was missing something or it just did not read as smoothly as I'd have liked.

In addition, I get that their college life is all about popularity, money, sex, and much of it went by in a blur of drugs and alcohol, but at the same time, there was a lot of it going on in the story, and I half thought most of the substance abuse goings on was just too repetitive and didn't really focus on the psychological issues they could have had at college. I don't think all of it was needed.

Even so, I did finish this book, and I did like the ending, it just wasn't completely enthralling enough for me to rate it higher than 3 stars, which is my 'jolly good' read, but not 'really, really enjoyable', and definitely not up there with 'I'm going to talk about this for weeks' five stars. Although, I could actually be talking about this for weeks, just not in the best light.
I really liked this book ..sorry for late review.
Great plot and story line did take me a while to get into it but all in all turned into an all nighter to finish it because I couldn’t put it down.
I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
This book follows Kate, Aubrey and Jenny, who are inseparable at college - friends who promised they'd always be there for each other.
But twenty years later, their friendship is about to take a deadly turn.
Kate married the gorgeous party boy, Aubrey married up, and Jenny married the boy next door, but when one of the friends dies in shocking circumstances, will everyone assume that it's always the husband? Or could it be the best friend?
It took me a little while to get into this book to be honest. The plotline was intriguing but I wasn't totally convinced by the three girl's friendship. It seemed doomed right from the start and the characters just didn't gel well together at all so how the girls lives ended up was pretty much predictable from the beginning.
However despite this, I loved the general plotline to this book. The whole story was gripping and once I got over my thoughts over the girl's friendship, the book was extremely hard to put down! The suspense in this book never let up and had me guessing all through the second half of the book.
The book was very cleverly-written, with both past and present perspectives. With conflicting accounts from the characters, I really got the chance to understand and know the characters. And yes I guessed how their lives would turn out judging by their personalities; I got the ending totally wrong! I just love unexpected endings!
A fantastic read from this author! Looking forward to her next!
This was sent to me by Net Galley for review.
This is a story of 3 “friends” through years of their lives.
The first thing that I noticed were the awful spelling mistakes with loads of symbols etc randomly in the middle of words and sentences. This is off-putting to say the least.
The story was ok plodded along quite happily but it just didn’t have the wow factor for me
Late to the party reviewing Its always the husband. But.... what can I say.... simply amazing!
What a fantastic read..... female friends turn to enermies, but who will end up killing who.... twists and turns, suspense, the authors art of the finer details that make for one very exceptional read.
A must read if you haven’t already.
Thanks for the arc.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book which is jammed packed of so many twists and turns. It takes us through twenty years in the lives of three unlikely friends Jenny, Kate and Aubrey, who are thrown together when they are allocated the same accommodation at college.
I found the book utterly riveting and couldn’t wait to find out what happened, which one of the friends would end up dead and who would end up killing them?
Highly recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Friends turned frenemies
A clever, character-driven novel. Perfect for fans of the Moriarty sisters (Liane, Jaclyn, Nicola.) This is a thriller, with a necessary dose of romanticism to keep things interesting.
Three young women: Aubrey, the social outcast. Kate, the rebellious, wild, spirit. Jenny, the rational and responsible one. They are roomates at Carlisle college, destined to be in each other's lives. They come to know too much, they become too involved and so even with families of their own and a life outside of Carlisle, they remain close. They are each others confidante, but they can't help but withhold the more destructive secrets. The secrets that hold the potential to ruin their 'innocent' friendship.
This book displayed superb writing, Michele Campbell clearly has a talent for observing quirks and tiny details which certainly helped make the bombshell of an ending remain unforeseen. The legal element was also fascinating, I don't tend to find books where the intricacies within the law are as detailed, it captured the whole debate around the absolute nature of the law. Who is to blame? Are moral crimes deserving of punishment?
If you're in the mood for a book about female friendship combined with a thriller, this is the book you should read.
I received this book through NetGalley.
This built from a very slow start to a satisfying conclusion. The characters weren't particularly likeable - but I don't think that mattered as there were enough twists to keep me intrigued.
Thank you to NetGalley and Mills & Boon for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It’s always the husband
This is a story about three very dislikeable characters, unfortunately the whole first half of the novel seemed to be leading nowhere. The second half picked up a little, but the pace was slow and the characters never seemed to redeem themselves and I found it hard to relate. I struggled to read through to the end and in my opinion the book did not live up to the synopsis. My thanks to Net Galley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
This may be an odd review. Normally when i find the characters unlikable. It makes me not want to read the book. With this one, even though the three women don't have one redeeming quality.
I was intrigued as to what the big event was, so that kept my interest. As well as who was on the bridge. Lets talk about Kate, i just don't understand why everyone is so obsessed with her. She is so self obsessed. Treats people so badly, yet she can do no wrong in their eyes. Now on to Aubrey she has some serious psychological issues. Finally onto Jenny she is probably the least messed up of the trio.
While the other two are more interested in partying. Jenny is busy studying. She is so jealous of Aubrey's adulation of Kate. When Aubrey breaks down to her, she is so gleeful that she finally can help. As we reach the Ladies as grown ups, they are more like frenemies than true friends. Once we arrive to where we started at the beginning of the book, the author treats us to lots of twists and turns before we find out who did it. One more final thing before I reach the conclusion of my review. Lets talk about the cop. Oh my god how unprofessional was he? After one encounter with the victim, he was obsessed with her. He was so obsessed with sticking it to her husband that he wasn't following police procedure.
ARC received from net galley. In exchange for an honest review.
Initially I was not sure if I was going to enjoy this book as the characters are not especially appealing, but once the plot began to to flow I wanted to find out where it was leading. The final third of the book was read in pretty much one sitting as I was looking forward to finding out whodunnit. I like the way the author kept you guessing right to the end and the way the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.
Murder, mystery, to romantic twists and turns from the past to the present and back again. Its always the husband, but which one and who's, is the question.
I received a digital ARC of #It’sAlwaysTheHusband by #NetGalley for an honest review.
This was a really good book with so many twists and turns in the last few chapters that I didn't know where I was! I read something and thought "right so that's what happened" and then in the next chapter something else would be revealed that would leave me shocked. I agree with the reviewer who said that the first half of the book seems like a different book to the first. The first half is definitely much slower paced than the second half. Once the second half of the book hits, the pace picks up dramatically and it becomes more intense and you don't want to put it down. I was left a bit speechless with the ending and am not yet sure if I'm totally happy with the ending, but that's just personal choice.
However, I cannot give a full 5 stars for this book, simply because of the number of spelling errors in it. I know this is probably due to the book being converted to kindle format, but surely it should have been checked before publication. I counted approximately 72 errors throughout the book ... things as simple as GrifF and T'd instead of I'd, but also words like jowr instead of your. In some places it is quite distracting from the plot line, though most of these errors are in the first half of the book which is slower paced.
I would recommend this book but would say either wait for an updated version for the kindle, or get hold of the paperback as then you won't have to deal with all the errors!!
