Early one morning, Seventeen-year-old Sofia Mounir, disenfranchised from her life in London, boards a flight to Turkey.
By the time the police know she’s missing, Sofia is already in Syria, ready to fight for the only cause she still believes in.
Granted this from NetGalley to read and review, but I cannot read this book, unfortunately.
I think this book is quite relevant today, as there is so many young girls joining ISIS to become brides. It gives a new meaning to fear for any parent. Gripping read, recommended.
A very good book that I would recommend to anyone who likes this genre. I will definitely be looking out for the next book by this author
Abraham is devastated when he finds out that his seventeen year old daughter has traveled to Syria to join in the cause. He embarks on a extremely dangerous journey to find his daughter and bring her home.
I found this thriller to be fast paced and parts had me on the edge of my seat. I found it hard to put down and read it in one day. I will be looking out for more from this author.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
It took me a while to get into this book. It was a slow starter but soon builds to grab your attention and becomes quiet fast paced with you holding your breath in places towards the end.
This is the first book I have read about Raqqa and Syria and my own curiosity drew me to read this book.
I liked the way in which the book is told from the perspective of both the Father and the Daughter and gives a very good view of how both the Father and the Daughter's view of the world around them.
There are distressing situations which makes the reader very aware of how different the world around us can be and at times the reality is very shocking.
Sofia is completely absorbed in the world around her and believes her path in life is to serve Him and show others the way. Her Fathers shock at finding his daughter has absconded to lead this different life is shocking and leaves you desperate for him to find her and bring her home safe.
You feel her Fathers desperation as he realises where his daughter is and watching his amazing journey to try and save his daughter is what really makes this story work.
I would definitely recommend this book to others and as a first time reader of a book of this nature this has certainly opened my eyes to the horrors that can be found in the world around us and how easily it is for others to be led down a different path to the one they have been brought up to believe in.
Very timely with the story of a girl fleeing to Syria and truly believing that she can go to this country and join in the cause, feel needed, wanted and feel part of something. Feeling lost and disillusioned at home in London, she flees to Raqqa but soon finds herself in the deep end to put it midly. I did wonder if this was the experience of many girls we hear about on the news who head out there, thinking they know better than anyone here and that the Isis fighters will be proud of their involvement. What happens in reality is that they have believed the same false message that Isis believe themselves and that soon the reality of being married to someone who will kill and die for their cause, is not someone you really want to be married to. It's a chilling tale and the speed at which she is totally converted just shows how easy this story could be real. I did find it overwhelming though and more of a political statement rather than a novel of fiction. Hard to get into and follow at times and sadly relevant to today.
