Always leave them wanting more! Well, this certainly seemed to be the theme of this book. It definitely had its funny moments but didn’t delve far enough into the meatier topics that would’ve given it the gravitas needed to contrast these, with a greater level of skill.
I received a free copy of this on NetGalley in exchange for this review. I really enjoyed this book by Iain Stirling. It was a funny and light hearted read that kept me turning the page to read on. Would recommend to anyone looking for an entertaining celeb read.
Tonightttttt........
Sorry, forgot for a second there that I'm not the Love Island voiceover man, Iain Stirling is! I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Iain in Glasgow last year to get my book signed, and I have to say that, after hearing his voice a lot without seeing him talk due to Love Island, his voice really doesn't match the person! For a time I genuinely thought that someone was dubbing his voice and that he was doing a Britney by lip-syncing speaking!
I jest.
Or do I?
Iain Stirling is known for several things; his comedy, his Love Island voiceover....and the dodgy pictures on Google from his time as a CBBC presenter. Honestly, google it if you don't believe me!
I was really looking forward to reading 'Not Ready To Adult Yet' because of how relatable the title was. How many of us wake up in the morning and are all like, 'F off, I don't want to be an adult, not today, not ever'? It happens, we're human. This book is incredibly relatable, and incredibly funny. If you wanted a recap of life in the early nineties when Saturday morning T.V. was the absolute BOMB, or if you wanted to get into the mindset of a millennial, you would be in your element with this read, that's for sure.
Not only that, HE EVEN GETS HIS MUM INVOLVED!! I thought his conversation with Mummy Stirling was so bloomin' funny! So down to earth and it was clear to see where he got that side of his personality from. Even though this book does talk a lot about the dark side of social media, peer pressure, and the impending doom of adulthood itself, Iain also delves into his own personal life as he looks back on the challenges he faced whilst growing up, as well as the hurdles he had to jump when first starting out as a comedian. Eye-opening for sure, especially when you learn that he told an 8 year old where to go! It makes my sticking my middle finger up at a kid, extremely tame!
I'm not a politics person. I don't understand it, even though it is incredibly important. So, I will hold my hands up and say that I found the parts regarding politics incredibly sluggish and I felt that they didn't really belong alongside the hilarity of Stirling's life. Just my opinion, obviously.
All in all, 'Not Ready To Adult Yet' is a honest, eye-opening, and snort inducing read about the things nobody else dares to talk about. The honesty of Iain Stirling is both commendable and 'HE SAID WHAT?!' - a brilliant combination from such a down to Earth man. Seriously, you get what it says on the tin with him!
Every once in a while I'll start a non fiction book and end up really liking it.
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
However I really LOVED this book by Iain. He's such a funny author and I loved reading this
Another book that has been waiting to be read on my Kindle since July 2018.
I requested it as I wanted to read something different. I was looking for a light and funny read this book didn’t fail. The book had everything I was looking for. It was funny, bizarre and had truthful points that I could relate to in some places.
I really enjoyed reading about Iain’s family life while growing up. I also loved hearing about the good and bad as well as the bizarre and funny situations Iain got into
I found the book was very well written, and from the language used you can definitely tell it’s been written by a comedian.
Overall a funny, light read that I enjoyed very much. I highly recommend especially if you’re into comedy reads and looking for something different.
Iain Stirling is a great stand up, I’ve seen him live and I think he’s great on Love Island so I was looking forward to this book. Unfortunately I was really disappointed. Maybe I just didn’t ‘get it’ but even some of the stories that had me rolling about laughing at his stand up, left me a bit cold reading them, so maybe they don’t translate without the bonus of being able to see them being acted out on stage.
I also felt that there were too many apologies; funny is funny; Iain isn’t a comedian who gets laughs inappropriately so there’s no need to apologise at the beginning or end of each chapter to whoever is the focus of that piece.
I’ll still go see him live but I’m afraid the book wasn’t for me.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the oootunity to give an honest opinion about this book.
Surprisingly good & very funny, not just a laugh out loud book but one that gets the cogs in your brain turning too.
Read in a couple of days & would recommend
A memoir from a millennial comedian for millennials about what it is to be an adult. Self indulgent and somewhat shallow it will appeal to fans of the comedian.
Comedy is hard in books. Really hard. So it's kudos to Stirling that he's created a book that isn't just genuinely lol funny, it's thought provoking too. It's jam packed with insights into his life and generation and even if, like me, you don't actually know who he is, you'll be highly entertained.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC without obligation.
Love it. Hilarious but you have to read it with his accent!
I hated Love Island at first as I found the commentary annoying- but after awhile it grows on you. This book was rather the same!
This would make a great Christmas present for anyone in your life who needs a good cheering up!
I loved this book and immediately went to listen to the accompanying podcast. I’m probably way too old to still be avoiding adulthood but this made me laugh with recognition and feel justified in my lifelong Peter Pan ambitions. Well worth a read!
This book is very funny and I laughed a lot which is unusual for me, as few books make me chuckle.
A very enjoyable read and well worth anyone's time.
A fun read - as the mother of a millennial, I could see a lot of my daughter in it - but I also remember a lot of the stories for myself.
Silly but heart-warming.
I don’t usually chose to read comedies but despite this not being my usual genre, I did find this book funny.
As a fan of Love Island, mostly for the narration by Stirling I couldn't wait to read something by him. It was a fun and quick read but I imagine quite age specific! He has a natural way with words, which is reassuring as his job is literally using words to make people laugh! A good escapist read.
Absolutely loved this! This year was my my first time watching Love Island and I fell head over heels in love with Iain Stirling! He made the show absolutely brilliant and the book did not disappoint either. It had me laughing out loud every chapter. This is one I will definitely be telling people about!
As a massive Love Island fan, I couldn’t wait to read this book, and it didn’t disappoint, you can’t help but read it in the way that he talks which makes it all the more funnier
After getting addicted to Love Island this summer and absolutely loving Iain Stirling's voiceover, I knew I had to read this book. It's a harsh yet hilarious look at millennial culture, with plenty of great anecdotes thrown in.
The writing style is informal, funny, and easy to follow, which made this a quick and entertaining read. It made me think and kept me laughing - overall a good book.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not my usual genre but will be on the lookout for more of the same.
Will recommend the author to friends and family, and eagerly await more material
I enjoyed this book although I felt it was aimed at people a lot younger than me. I am a Millennial (just about!) but I didn't really relate to Iain's musings although his anecdotes were amusing. I haven't watched Love Island but I feel I would have enjoyed this book a lot more of I had.
