Many thanks to the publisher, the author and Netgalley for my review copy. This is the first Tim Weaver I have read and it certainly won't be the last. This book hits you from the opening page. I literally couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting. The plot pulls you forward with it like an express train. Brilliant concept too, I loved the way the fictional stories were woven into the plot. Raker is a brilliantly drawn character; I wish I had read the earlier books first so I could see his development. Excellently thrilling read.

David Raker cannot believe his eyes when a woman walks into a police station in London claiming to be his wife Derryn. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Derryn and knowing personal information about their marriage and life together, how could this not be her? Yet David nursed Derryn through the final stages of terminal cancer, buried her and grieved for her. Determined to prove this woman a fraud, David unearths a whole can worms. What he discovers sends shockwaves through his core.

What a wonderful book! I thought it was a brilliantly tangled web of twists and turns. Yes, it was over-the-top and far-fetched but at the same time, unputdownable and fantastically gripping. I was hooked from the get-go. It was intricate and excellently put together. Although part of a series, it works equally well as a stand-alone.

This was my first introduction to author Tim Weaver; therefore I had no preconceptions. It became immediately obvious I was in the very capable hands of a great storyteller. I wept at the sadness of a woman taken in her prime; I longed for her not be gone. I literally felt every emotion possible.

If you want suspense, thrills and action from beginning to end, this book is an absolute treat. In fact I enjoyed it so much, I've bought more by the same author and added them to my reading list.

This novel had me hooked from the first page the concept
was exciting and intriguing and I was hooked until the last third when it just turned in to one long explanation, sadly at this point it lost me and I ended up skimreading. This would be a four star read if it was edited and the ending was sharper.

The trouble with getting an early review copy of a book is that sometimes you are introduced to a new character who clearly has such an interesting back-story that they are worthy of exploring further. This is the case with David Raker in Tim Weaver's "You Were Gone". Although the book can be read as a stand-alone novel (I didn't realise it was part of a series when I started) I was intrigued by the hints and descriptions of past cases to want to find out more - so I'll certainly be reading others in the series. I need to know why Raker's work as a missing person investigator upset certain members of the Metropolitan police force so badly, and why he is protecting a former policeman by helping him go off-the-grid.

The plot revolves around a woman claiming to be Raker's wife, suddenly turning up at a police station in London. The problem is that the wife died of cancer 8 years ago. So who is the mystery woman and how does she know so much about their marriage? Why does a renown psychiatrist support her claims? Even Raker begins to doubt his own sanity.

Some aspects of this plot did require suspension of belief, but the book was well-written, the locations described expertly and the characters realistic and engaging. The ending came as a surprise - I genuinely didn't see that coming! Thoroughly recommended for crime / thriller fans.

Brilliantly written thriller of a difference with a plot so complex but that compels you to keep reading to the very last page.

I devoured this book! It was my first Tim Weaver / David Raker book and I couldn't put it down. It was gripping from the first few pages to the very end - and what an ending it was!

It didn't matter that I hadn't read any of the previous books and can absolutely be read as a standalone but I imagine it's even better if you read the books in order. I certainly will start reading them now.

I would definitely recommend this book and can't wait to start the series!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this publication in return for an unbiased review.
I have read all the Tim Weaver books and he has never ceased to entertain me by coming up with new ideas on missing person cases.
This one is a step away from the norm, and instead of a straight forward missing person case for investigation the main character and his history is central to the whole story.
Being totally honest, it took me a while to get into this one, but certainly glad I kept with it as a really good read once I got my head around it.
Keep up the good work Mr Weaver.

I would highly recommend this book. It's one that grips you from page 1 until the last page. Thrilling and a ride of emotions. Characters developed in such an amazing way that you can really connect with each and worry about what's next! Highly recommend to thriller lovers!

This is a gripping, psychological thriller, and to start with I didn't know who to believe. The puzzles are all solved in the end, with one paeticularly good twist. At times I found it a little long winded, hence only four stars. It is a very enjoyable, entertaining read, and I will look out for more books by Tim Weaver.

A really gripping and unusual book, which is the first one for ages to make me gasp out loud at the revelation of the perpetrator! It was engaging from the start and intrigued me with its twist on identity theft and mind games. I found the characters and their back-story interesting and quickly became involved in the mystery. I loved the drip-feed of information which allowed the reader to participate in the unravelling of the plot, but also be satisfyingly shocked at the denouement. The only disappointing aspect of the book for me is the rather pedestrian and lengthy explanation of the loose ends, which tends to blur the effect of the big reveal of whodunnit near the end. However a lively and enjoyable page-turner which keeps the reader hooked to discover the truth.

The premise of the book was really interesting. A woman walks into a police station saying that she was Derryn, David Rakers wife and has been missing for 8 years but David Raker’s wife died of Cancer 8 years ago.

The important thing to know before you read this book is that it is part of a series. When I requested this I was unaware it was part of a series and that I had read one other book within the series. Although it has been said that these books can be read as stand-alones I really feel that I would have rated them both higher had I read the series in order. I really did not enjoy this book. I found the story to be very slow and it really didn’t make much sense. I really struggled to get through it.

Thanks to Net Galley and Penguin UK for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
Fast paced psychological thriller, Raker is a missing Person Investigator, doesn’t always play by the rules, his wife died 8 years ago and he still misses her and is only starting to build his life again, when he gets a call from the police telling him they have a woman claiming to be his missing wife Derryn. This roller coaster story picks up pace, the woman looks a lot like Derryn, sounds like her, but Raker knows it’s not her, he now has to prove that.
Enjoyed the characters in this book, lots of twists to the story, didn’t want to put the book down. I did not know this was part of a series but it is a good stand alone read, it’s the first book I have read by this author, thoroughlyenjoyed, and will definitely be reading more.

This is an exciting novel based on identity theft and deception. It held my interest and sustained the tension to the end. I hadn’t before read any of Tim Weaver’s books and that was my only reservation about choosing this one. However, there was enough references to past stories to ensure the story flowed.

I had already read other titles by Tim Weaver so when I was lucky enough to receive You Were Gone via Netgalley, I couldn't wait to get stuck in confident that this was going to be an excellent story.

Nor was I disappointed; this is a dark, shocking, and compelling psychological thriller that I didn't want to ut down, nor did I want it to end.

Just when you thought you were beginning to get things sussed there would be yet another twisted element that you hadn't, and really couldn't possibly have anticipated.

Weaver is such a professional that whilst he takes you on a roller coaster of emotions, disappointment is never amongst them. Such a brilliant ending too, be prepared to shed a tear or two.

This is my first David Raker novel but it definitely won’t be my last! Excellent thriller from Tim Weaver that keeps you guessing throughout. With twists and turns aplenty, this book had me reading long into the night. A fabulous 4.5 star read that I highly recommend.

You Were Gone starts with a great opening. David Raker's wife - dead for 8 years - apparently arrives at a London police station. She insist the police get hold of David Raker. I've read all of Tim Weaver's series of book on David Raker and I would advise anyone starting reading them to start with a much earlier book. However those who are fans will know just how affected by Derryn's death David was. To go to the police station and see someone who claims to be here and who says she lives with him has a profound effect on him. She even looks like Derryn. It sets the scene for a story I think is outstanding in what is an excellent series.

Initially I found it hard to see how this story could be sustained really. Alleged wife walks into police station, prove that she has died and is imposter, story ends... Nope - Tim Weaver is a far cleverer writer than that. The David Raker of this book is the same as he was before however someone is seriously messing with his mind. So often the phrase "psychological thriller" is used and often - for me - it isn't true. Parts of this one are deeply dark and psychological and troubling for Raker and the reader. Throw in the fact that, in general, the Metropolitan Police are not fans of Raker and Raker is very alone.

I've been a fan of David Raker since the first book I read over 5 years ago. He is one of my favourite characters without question. In this book Weaver digs even deeper into David's psyche and to great effect. The other characters work well in their parts too. Some new ones appear and so old ones are still around.

This is the usual standard of excellent tense writing. It's pacey and twists well. Raker's star rises and falls dramatically at times. It is a very well thought out book and well researched too. Tim Weaver's penchant for old deserted places is put to good use again. Weaver is one of a small handful of genuinely favourite authors. He has not disappointed me so far and to my joy it looks as though this is not the last David Raker book. I'm inclined to say that this may be the best of the series so far - no mean feat in the 9th book of the series. I'd be fairly certain that fans will love.

A tense thriller from the first to the last page. Raker is such a great character but in this story he spirals so far down it's hard to see any way back. We get a wonderful story of love in the background which contracts perfectly with the evil doings that make this story such an attention gripper. Fans of police procedure will enjoy this one too, but is every cop a good cop? A thoroughly enjoyable read. Strongly recommended.

An interesting premise which was hard to follow (and believe) at times, but it went at a rip roaring pace and kept me glued until the end. Read in one night, enjoyed but ending seemed to point towards another book perhaps?

I'm a huge Tim Weaver - David Raker fan having devoured all his books. I'm very grateful that Net Galley have given me the opportunity to read the last two in the series ahead of publication. Out of all the Raker novels I would say that this is the weakest, many might disagree. It started well with the appearance of David's beloved, long dead wife but then got a bit complicated and unbelievable. What I loved about Tim's previous books in this series is that the locations changed numerous times and there was plenty of action, David was always in the wrong place at the wrong time, places other people wouldn't go and not just geographically, and although it was a novel story line and a very intriguing one, it was somewhat unbelievable. I dearly hope that there will be another David Raker book as I really love them, I just hope that Tim hasn't run out of ideas. Reading this has made me want to reread another in the series which was my favourite, sadly this was my least.
