I enjoyed this book....I liked the small town setting, the wonderful characters (especially the elderly sisters), and how Jennie Sue deals with the gossip and rumours which seem to characterize life in a small town.
I received an ARC from NetGalley.. This is the first book I have read by Carolyn Brown's . Small Town Rumors was an easy read.. Jenny Sue just wanted to be a normal small town girl and in the end she got her wish. I love the older ladies Nadine and Lettie. Nothing like small town gossip to keep the town a going. I would definitely recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for an honest review. Thank you!
Small Town Rumors by Carolyn Brown was laugh out loud funny. The way Carolyn captured this small town was perfect. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Non-stop town chatter, a funny novel (yet heartache as well) full of delicious characters make for a win-win for the reader of this novel. So much fun to see the main character find herself, find new and real friends and most of all a true love. I loved this title and appreciate the opportunity to have read it prior to publication.
I think I will be looking for every other book by Carolyn Brown. I loved Small Town Rumors, from the character descriptions to the fictional but realistic depiction of a small town rumor mill. Carolyn Brown writes a great entertaining story and creates a storyline that could be overshadowed by the harshness of gossip but instead provides the perfect backdrop to a romance and life lesson.
Enjoyable read ... perfect for summer. Another win for Author. Characters are likeable, good portrait of small town living!
I just love Carolyn Brown! She captures the true small town! She is so witty and makes me literally laugh out loud! What she says is so true about "Small Town Rumors"!! Thank you for a great read!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it.
I have not read books by this author before and enjoyed this one.
Jennie Sue is back in Bloom, Texas after getting divorced and leaving New York. She doesn't want to stay with her rich parents, she wants a job and independance so takes a job as a cleaner and another in a bookstore. The new firends she makes are great, particularly Lettie and Nadine, tow elderly sisters who she cleans for.
The town is rife with rumours, everyone thinks they know what is going on with everyone else - like living in a fishbowl.
Despite some parts of the book being quite sad, this was balanced well by the humour in the rest of the book.
Jennie Sue has come back to her small town Texas town, where her daddy runs the oil company and her mama runs in her high society circle. Jennie has come home somewhat broken, as her ex-husband ran off and left her with a lot of debt and issues. She strives for independence, and gets a job cleaning houses and working in a used bookstore. Meeting up with Cricket, the girl who hated her in high school, and her veteran brother Rick, add to the mix of her new circle. I found this to be a wonderful story, and one that was hard to put down. All the rumors were irritating though, and although for the most part not necessarily cruel, they were still annoying. Coming from a small town this was my least favorite part too, but it also shows that for the most part people mean well, they are just not the best at minding their own business, especially when they have someone else to discuss. Rick and Jennie Sue make a darling couple, and the HEA is sweet. Highly recommend this story of ups and downs. Great author and book.
I am not a fan of light, fluffy books that take an unexpected dark turn, and Small Town Rumors did just than. With the romance and new beginnings was horrible tragedy that was unexpected and unnecessary for the telling of the story.
That being said, I still enjoyed reading this book. The characters were well developed and funny, and I did like the overall story line. I still highly recommend this book-I just think you should know what you are getting ready to read!
A well written book ,good plot and excellent development of the characters as the plot develops.
A nice summer read, relaxing to read with a glass of good wine,Would recommend this book.
Lady, you don't even ask how your daughter is?
Why was she in the hospital?
"Just a farmer"? Really?
This poor woman!
Shoot, I'd have mistresses too if I was married to that woman.
Is anyone normal in this town?
Cricket, the only person who can make you happy is you.
Her husband said what to her?! And she still stayed married to him?
Lettie, are you being nice to Jennie Sue because you know it will kill Charlotte?
These old ladies are crazy. but I love them!
Attagirl.
Geez Charlotte, the seventies just passed you by, didn't they.
Karma, Cricket.
Just when you think Charlotte might really have been abducted by nice aliens...
I think she should have been able to take pictures of Emily Grace and be there for the funeral.
What the hell?! That came out of nowhere!
Coulda, shoulda, woulda.
Is this really how Southern small towns are?
I love me some heirlooms, Justin. Piss off, Lawrence.
You don't let grass grow under your feet, do you Amos.
You old ladies are full of surprises, the good kind.
Mabel and Frank were as much her parents as her real ones were, probably more so.
I guess that makes me a CEO Catholic.
I want a Rick! Even when he's being a moody butt, he's still wonderful.
Good luck to you, Danielle Crossett, whoever you are.
The epilogue is beautiful.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC from Netgalley. I'm a big fan of Carolyn Brown's feel goods. Small Town Rumors was fabulous. Jenny Sue just wanted to be a normal small town girl and in the end she got her wish. I love Nadine and Lettie. I would definitely recommend this book.
Carolyn Brown always writes such humorous books. There are a couple of little old ladies that makes Small Town Rumors, funny as all get out. Rick doesn't play a front role part in the book, but enough to make it a romance. The story is mainly about Jennie Sue.
Jennie Sue comes home after divorcing her cheating law breaking husband and is immediately thrown back into the life she knew as a teen. Her mother insists that she follow in her footsteps as a society matron but Jennie Sue wants her own life. She becomes her own person and ends up learning how to be self confident again. Rick was injured in the war and between him and Jennie Sue they forge a new life. Sweet romance of second chances at life and love.
