So I started this book not knowing what I was going to go into.
For some reason, I didn't even realise it was based on Cinderella.
As I read more and more I soon discovered the similarities.
I really enjoyed the twist on Cinderella that was geeky.
I will definitely purchase the other books.
Ashley did a fantastic job of letting me feel emotions during this book.
I was angry one page, swooning the next!
This book was absolutely adorable and I was hooked!
I definitely recommend this book!

Geekerella is a novel that is MADE to be a film! I’ve been a convention goer for many years, so reading this novel was so much fun. I love love love this book.

Step aside A Cinderella Story because I have a new favorite Cinderella re-telling!
You see, as much as I love that quintessential Hillary Duff teen classic, Geekerella is a story that truly speaks to my nerdy inner child. At WonderCon this past weekend the author, Ashley Poston, described the book as reminiscent of an old-school Disney Channel original movie and I could not agree more. Geekerella is fun, quirky, and full of heart. It’s everything I could have wanted in a young adult romance as a kid. Sadly, it didn’t come along until I was an adult!

I have often said that if there had been more nerd positive young adult books on the market when I was growing up I may have enjoyed contemporary fiction more. Instead, I shied away from books with modern settings and romantic themes because I never really felt they represented me. Geekerella, on the other hand, has a heroine that I can see myself in a hundred times over.

Elle is a total nerd through and through. So much about her reminds me of myself back in high school. She’s obsessed with the long since cancelled science fiction series, Starfield, and an avid member of the online fandom where she’s fairly well known under her online moniker Rebelgunner. When Starfield gets pegged for a reboot she’s got some pretty strong opinions about things – especially the casting choices as far as the main character Prince Carmindor is concerned.

Darien, meanwhile, is the teenage heartthrob cast as Prince Carmindor. He’s exactly the kind of person that Elle’s stepsisters, Chloe and Calliope, would fawn over for hours – and so Elle immediately rails against him. The thing is, Darien is also secretly a huge nerd who absolutely loves Starfield and can’t believe he’s scored the role of Prince Carmindor.

Through a series of random happenstances, these two young people from very different backgrounds begin communicating anonymously through text messages. While Elle deals with her uncaring stepmother and insufferable, ‘perfect’ stepsisters we see Darien dealing with his overbearing father and the pressure that comes with fame. Despite never seeing one another or knowing each other’s real names, they become close confidants, helping each other out in their own way.

One of the best parts of this book is seeing how Elle and Darien’s relationship develops. For most of the book their lives are distinctly separate with the only common ground really being the production of the Starfield film (which they obviously experience from very different perspectives) and the upcoming ExcelsiCon convention. But they always have one another. They communicate and support one another the way many readers will probably have done with online friends. There’s an openness to everything that comes with anonymity and throughout you wait anxiously for the two of them to meet in person.

The relationships that develop between the rest of the characters are equally compelling. Elle’s co-worker at the Magic Pumpkin food truck, Sage, is a phenomenal character that reminds me of so many people I’ve known throughout my life. She’s talented and uncompromisingly unique in every way and watching the two of them go from standoffish co-workers to friends is one of the greatest parts of Geekerella. But I also love seeing the way Darien interacts with his cast mates, the way his relationship with his father changes, and the way Elle begins to learn that her stepsisters – despite being twins – aren’t necessarily the same person.

Probably the coolest part of this book, though, is Starfield. Poston has created a series from scratch (loosely inspired by Star Trek: The Original Series among other shows) that after reading Geekerella you’re going to wish were real. We learn enough about the show, the characters, and the major plot points that Starfield almost feels like something the reader should already know about. You immediately want to know everything that happens to Prince Carmindor and his love, Amara. And you wish that David Singh – the original Prince Carmindor – was real and that he had existed in our world to challenge convention as an actor of color helming a classic science fiction series.

The dedication put into developing the Starfield canon really adds to the reader’s sense of immersion into not just the story but this world of fandom that Poston has created — and that Elle calls home.

From well developed characters to an engaging story to her vibrant, realistic portrayal of fandom and convention culture, author Ashley Poston does a phenomenal job with this book. While the story keeps with the usual Cinderella plot points she doesn’t let herself be too constrained by the framework. Her characters are much more than their fairy tale counterpart inspirations and Elle’s happily ever after isn’t just dependent on finding her Prince Carmindor but also about realizing her own hopes and aspirations.

It’s such a great story. At this point I should probably just say that I honestly love basically everything about Geekerella. I even love cover and interior designs. If you love fandom and you love old school science fiction series, you’re going to love seeing those two things come bundled together in a neat little young adult romance.

For all the geek girls out there who feel left out by all the usual contemporary romance books out there – this one is for you. As Prince Carmindor says in the last episode of Starfield, “Look to the stars. Aim. Ignite.” And get your nerd girl feels on with Geekerella!

This was such a fun read! So cute! I loved the "geekiness" of it all and how the well known fairytale of Cinderella has been retold in a contemporary way!

This book was such a sweet and fun read.

I absolutely loved the geeky twist the author gave to my beloved Cinderella story. At first, I wasn't really sure about it, I felt it might have been a bit too teenish, but seriously, it took cuteness to a whole new level. One of the things I loved most was how much of a dork and nervous Darien was. Like, he was about to do the performance of his dreams and he kept questioning if he was going to be any good. I think that would be all of us. Or at least that would totally be me haha.

Seriously, this was super cute, light and quick read and perfect if you're feeling up to something that won't requite too much thought, just the need to have fun.

I was very excited to start this book. Who doesn't want to read a book about geeks? Unfortunately I couldn't really connect with the characters at all. I realize that me and this book just don't match. I DNfed this book unfortunately, so I am unable to give a proper review.

I am SO disappointed! I really wanted to like this with all its sweetness but it's a little too much for me. Also, so many references? I felt lost at places like the characters were trying to actually be geekier than the readers. Well, if that was the case, this should totally get five stars.

Also, I feel like my dislike for the actual Cinderella fairytale might be influencing my opinion because the lead in this one is not the strongest but I'm mentioning this so you can understand where I'm coming from and how you might actually like this one, so do give it a try.

This was SO FUN! I loved the Cinderella retelling, and the ExcelsiCon atmosphere. It's so nerdy and sassy, but had some moments of true sadness as well.

What a cute story. Great retelling if Cinderella, that tugged on my little nerd heartstrings. Funny, sweet, and heartwarming.

“Never give up on your dreams, and never let anyone tell you that what you love is inconsequential or useless or a waste of time. Because if you love it? If that OTP or children's card game or abridged series or YA book or animated series makes you happy?
That is never a waste of time. Because in the end we're all just a bunch of weirdos standing in front of other weirdos, asking for their username.”

I loved Geekerella! It was quirky, the characters were memorable, and I loved the story.

I really enjoyed this book. There was a perfect combination of retelling and geek-life throughout the story. There were moments where the character's actions felt out of place, but when looking back those actions fit perfectly within the retelling's characteristics (how the original character had acted). I loved the inclusion of both real and fictional fandoms and how they would interact with each other. I found both the main and the side characters were interesting and I wanted to know more about them. I was able to see the twist in Darien's plot fairly early on, although I did have another theory that didn't pan out. I loved the ending and would absolutely love to see a true sequel following Elle and Darien.

Very cute take on Cinderella! I especially liked how Poston was able to work the pumpkin into the story. It was refreshing that one of Elle's stepsisters was not evil, I always appreciate when that happens.

This book is one big cheese fest, full of cliche and just a little bit of cringe. Basically it's not really my kind of book. I figured i'd give it a go as i've not really read any fairy-tale retellings and this one sounded like it might be an interesting twist with the comic-con vibe. Now don't get me wrong there were a lot of bits i really enjoyed, particularly the friendship between Sage and Elle, i personally preferred Sage in terms of character. But then there was a lot more i didn't enjoy, like the evil step sisters and their plans, the falling in love over phone messages, and unfortunately the character of Elle. I found her to be a little bit wet, she really didn't seem to be able to do anything for herself at all. I realise she's meant to be modelled after a Disney Princess style Cinderella but still she was annoying.

Overall, i will not be reading the second book in the series unless it contains significantly more Sage and less Elle. This is not to say this is a bad book, it just wasn't for me.

Geekerella turns out to be an adorable Cinderella retelling that people with fandoms can relate to. I totally enjoyed that whole side of the story and I appreciate how it tried to let the readers know what Starfield is all about. I just don't understand the fear Elle has for her stepmother when she's not that bad at all. Even the sudden standing up for herself feels like out of her character. But overall, it's an enjoyable read.

My Review: OMG this book was just adorable!! If you loved Fangirl then this book is for you hands down!! I could not put it down and OMG it was over the top but so amazing. This is just one of those books that you want to read and then read again as soon as your done. This one had some twists that I loved and this is a totally fandom title. If you are a fan girl or fan boy or fan whatever this book is one that you will not want to miss!!

I was really looking forward to reading this book so I was disappointed when I couldn't even make it half way into the story. I was bored from the first page. For me the entirety of the story felt cliche and old. I never connected with Elle. I didn't understand why or care that she was texting with Darien. Her complaints about her step-mother and sisters were boring. I knew that it was going to be a Cinderella retelling, but I was hoping for some amount of newness to the story. Sadly I didn't find any. I wanted to like the parts of the story that had to do with fandom, but I didn't really get into that either because it felt just like a mashup of every Sci-Fi ever.

I really enjoyed this book. I’d seen it around but hadn’t got round to reading it. I cannot wait to read the sequel.

I didn't really enjoy this. I like Ella and Darien separately but I did not gel with the story or them as a couple. I really tried to enjoy this and appreciate the twist that Poston did with the Cinderella story but this was not for me.
