I wanted to like this book as it sounded good but I couldn't get into it. I would have not reviewed but NetGalley insists on a review to keep your profile rating up even when you say you are declining to read it.
A fun easy read but unfortunately didn’t grip me. I also didn’t realise it was the second book in a series (my own fault) I think of would be a decent holiday read for those who enjoyed the first book
I really struggled to keep going with this book, unfortunately not a gripping thriller like I had hoped. Could be a very enjoyable read for some as it sounds like an easy summer read.
I loved the first book and the second novel is also great fun. This one is more setting the scene for the final book in the trilogy and Evie is just as phsycotic as before. Absolute mad fun to read
Oh good lord. What was this? Bad, that's what. Really, really bad. Puerile writing, bad characters, bad plot. Described on Amazon as 'a gripping, dark and outrageously funny thriller'. Don't be ridiculous. It isn't in the least bit funny…the sides of my mouth didn't even twitch. Dark…perhaps. Gripping? Not in the least…other than wanting to see if the whole thing could get any more pathetic and stupid.
The main protagonist, Alvie, is awful. When I say 'awful', I mean completely and utterly ghastly. Selfish, greedy, irresponsible, impolite, discourteous, disrespectful…oh, I could go on…I'll just add that she's a sociopathic slut, too.
She kills her twin sister, Beth. And Beth's husband. And Beth's lover. And her lover's 'business' partner. And a stalker. And a nun. And a police officer. And his colleagues. So much fun! Oh, and I mustn't forget, 'outrageously funny'.
Badly written, inane plot, dreadful and undeveloped characters. And for heaven's sake, if you're going to pepper the dialogue with a foreign language (in this case, Italian), get someone to check it. That's it, I'm leaving it there. I wasted time reading the book, it deserves no more.
Not for me this one. I just couldn’t get on with the characters or the plot.
Can’t like them all., but I can see how it could be the perfect summer read for some
I didn't really enjoy this book - maybe it just wasn't what I was expecting. The 'funny' sometimes seems to be more of the 'ridiculous' or the 'unrealistic' - but maybe that was the point by the author and I just missed the point.
Fantastic follow up to the first book.
Could not put it down.
Like the first one it took you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
This series is definitely one that I’ll be finishing
This is the second book of a 3 part series and I was so excited to read it! It didn't meet my expectations
I really enjoy this series but also hate it at the same time. One minute I love the main character and the next I want to punch her in the face, but she certainly makes for an entertaining read! Lots of plot twists because Alvie is anything but boring! Definitely makes for good reading!
A very funny book.It needs a warning regarding its X-rated language and the body-count increases alarmingly as the book progresses. It follows on from the equally funny "Mad" which is worth reading first. Don't expect a realistic storyline - or detailed characterisation - just a funny fantasy romp with sex and violence
Having not read the first book in the Mad, bad series I didn't really connect with this book. But I suppose it would be a good holiday read,
I absolutely loved the first in this trilogy so was so looking forward to this one. The first book, ‘Mad’, is funny, weird, different, and Alvie is all of these things too. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy ‘Bad’ nearly as much.
The things that happen in ‘Mad’ work so well because they are shocking and unexpected and you can’t quite believe the things that Alvie gets up to. In ‘Bad’ it’s either more of the same (so it’s no longer a shock) or things are just ridiculously out there, so much so that it doesn’t feel as funny or as compelling.
There are some really funny moments, and I do love the author’s writing style. It just all felt a bit ‘samey’.
It’s a real shame, because I think Alvie has so much potential – she’s so different to all those wishy-washy female characters out there. I’m hoping this is just a glitch though, and I will give the third book a go. I just hope the Alvie we know and love is back to her mad, bad and dangerous best.
A real disappointment. The story doesn't seem to go anywhere, the plot is plodding and without real surprise or twists to keep the narrative interesting. A struggle to finish.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! So odd yet so riveting and funny. So many things happen you are on the edge of your seat.
This was very easy to read but not really for me. I wasn't really impressed by the language or dialogue to be perfectly honest and the plot did not really grab me.
I am sorry to say that unfortunately I couldn’t finish this book. I persevered to about half way through and had to stop reading. The volume of details describing places and situations made this unreadable for me as it too too much away from the story.
I didn't manage to finish this one. The character was interesting and I wanted to see how it would end but I just found it dragged out rather a lot and was quite predictable.
I really didn't enjoy this - it wasn't funny, just quite crude and I was just flipping over the pages by the end. Not my thing at all.
Although this book is the 2nd in the series behind "Mad" I think it can be easily read as a standalone as I did not discover this until halfway through the book. The story follows Alvie Knightly who is on the run following a series of events that resulted in the death of her sister Beth - who Alvie was not overly fond of anyway by all accounts. For a variety of reasons - including outrunning The Mob - Alvie assumes her sister's identity before murdering her husband (but in reality her brother-in-law) and running off with Nico, her husband/brother-in-law's business partner.
I'm sorry to say that this was just not my cup of tea at all. I found the plot implausible at best and at times completely unbelievable and I did not like (or have any interest in) any of the characters.
Although not my usual type of read I did like the writing style and the fast pace of the book so would probably be an enjoyable read for others.
Thanks to Netgalley and publishers for the ARC.
