This is an endearing romance involving two people who have very different reasons for being wary of romance. She is Catrina Thomas and her beloved husband tragically died, leaving her a widow. He is Dr Finn Foley, a paediatrician whose wife left him and their newborn daughter, Piper, shortly after giving birth to her. Both have moved to live in the delightful Lighthouse Bay and have seen each other on the beach but although there is definitely an attraction there between them their past experience makes both of them resistant to romance.
What a super setting, great community and lovely, heartwarming story this proved to be. The romance develops slowly but both acknowledge that Finn is still married and how can they have a future together until she is found? There are some details of different births in amongst this and it has a delightful ending. The story will have you going through the whole gamut of emotions as you read it. If you enjoy contemporary medical romances you’ll probably love this one!
I requested and was given a copy of this novel, via Mills & Book Insiders and NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.
Healed by the Midwife's Kiss is written by Fiona McArthur and published by Mills & Boon Medical. This novel is the second in the Midwives of Lighthouse Bay series and is a gentle slow paced medical romance.
Set in Australia, so full of Australian colloquiums, Dr Finn Foley has relocated to Lighthouse Bay after his wife left him and their baby girl when she was just a day old. He has left behind a successful paediatric practice and instead taken a position of General Practitioner with a side of paediatric consultations at the local hospital so he can spend time with Piper, his baby girl. Catrina Roberts is a widow and a midwife who works and lives in Lighthouse Bay. Both are wary of love and not keen on commitment due to being hurt in the past. They start off as friends and move on from there. Finn's wife returns briefly but this seems to be the incentive Finn needs to move forward with his life. Will Finn and Catrina have love and happiness within their sights, if they are willing to grasp it!
This is a very slow burning romance. There isn't much angst, any sizzling sex scenes or dramatic reconciliation. It is a traditional gentle medical romance. The return of the wife appeared rushed and glossed over, a bit of a wasted character but overall it was an enjoyable read.
I received this book via Netgalley and Mills and Boon in exchange for an honest review, I am a #millsandbooninsider #Netgalley #healedbythe midwiveskiss
Fiona McArthur’s ‘Healed by the Midwife’s Kiss’ is a lovely quick read that runs the gambit of emotions, revealing to you and the characters that with time, with patience, and most of all, with love, anything is possible.
The story of Finn and Catrina is what I’d call a slow burn, the pacing of the story mirroring perfectly the emotional state that we meet the protagonists in respectively. Both have dealt with disappointment, with loss, and both are slowly starting to clear the fog that has long clouded their lives. The setting provides a simply love background to the story, as do the wide range of secondary characters, chief amongst which Finn’s daughter Piper is especially endearing. As Finn and Catrina learn to interact with each other, become friends, and find out the depth of emotion that they feel for one another, the past returns to the picture, making them have to decide what is right for them, and for those in their lives. Finn and Catrina are faced with owning up what the other means to them, the shared love for Piper, and whether they can truly help one another heal.
I enjoyed this story, finding it sweet, endearing, and easy to read. There was greater focus on character development and the overcoming of emotional trauma than on other kinds of tension, which suited the tone of this romance novel. The medical jargon was well researched and didn’t detract from the tone of the story, instead showcasing that they were both indeed well-educated and well suited to their chosen professions. I found myself relating to that emotional distance that one might employ when both dealing with a traumatic experience, and trying to find the best way to move on past it, to move on with one’s life. The only thing missing was a bit more building of the relationship between the two, or perhaps getting to experience the bit just before they received their well-earned HEA, but that’s just me being greedy! If you’re looking for a quick read with characters that will melt your heart, this novel by Fiona McArthur will fill that prescription!
A lovely, gentle romance. Catrina and Fin both have sadness in their past, and are cautious when they meet. But the attraction between them is undeniable.
Both characters are lovely, and I was rooting for them from the start. And I have to add that baby Piper was the most adorable child I've found in a book for a while.
This is an honest review, and I have to thank Mills & Boon Insiders and Netgalley for a copy of this book.
I absolutely adored the story of Finn & Catrina. Finn's wife does a runner the day after their daughter is born. Leaving Finn holding baby Piper. They move to Lighthouse Bay for a fresh start. Catrina is a midwife at the local maternity bay. After losing her husband at a young age Catrina hides behind her job. Finn and Catrina keep meeting as they cross paths on the beach. They are intrigued by each other but each is wary of getting involved with anyone. As they slowly get to know each other ,they each have to deal with issues from the past . Highly recommended for fans of contemporary romance. I look forward to reading more of Fiona McArthur's work.
ARC received from net galley and Mills & Boons insiders. In exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this story about a paediatrician Finn Foley and a midwife Caterina Thomas. Finn has moved to Lighthouse Bay with his baby daughter leaving his practice and former life behind in order to concentrate on giving her the best start in life he can. His wife deserted them both the day after the baby was born meaning Finn had to step up and be everything to his daughter. Caterina is a widow, her husband having died from a brain tumour, and she is still grieving although starting to come to terms with his death with the help of the true friends she has made at Lighthouse birthing unit. From Finn and Caterina's first meeting to the ending a year later, the story kept you sufficiently interested in wabting to know what was going to happen next - and rooting for them to 'get it together', Inevitably, the missing in action wife appears on the scene... I did enjoy ehis book, and think other readers of medical romances will enjoy it as well, because there is sufficient medical detail to justify the 'medical' romance genre.
When you pick up a book by Fiona McArthur you know you are in for an enjoyable read! Her descriptive writing is excellent so that one is able to imagine, feel and hear what is happening. The plot is easy and captures the interest from the beginning. It is the sort of story to pack for the holidays or cuddle up with on a miserable weekend stuck in the house. This is yet another top class story from a top class author.
Healed By The Midwife's Kiss (Mills & Boon Medical) is the second book in The Midwives of Lighthouse Bay series.
Dr Finn Foley has given up his busy career in the city and has moved to Lighthouse Bay to spend quality time with his baby daughter. His wife left them both when the baby was just a day old. He has no idea where she is, or even if she is alive, but he pushes that from his mind in order to concentrate on making his daughter happy.
Catrina Thomas is a widow and also a midwife living at Lighthouse Bay. She is content with how her life is now, and although the grief of losing her husband often hits when she least expects it, for the most part, she is doing well. She doesn't ever want to fall in love again though because it is just too painful.
When Finn and Catrina meet it isn't a case of love at first sight, but they can definitely appreciate each others' looks. Circumstances have them spending more and more time with each other and with each interlude, they start to fall for each other. How can they have a future though when somewhere out there Fin has a wife, and when Catrina is scared to love again?
I quite enjoyed this story, and I especially loved that it is set in Australia. I loved reading the Aussie colloquialism, and the cultural aspects of the story. I enjoyed the details of a few different births and how any drama was dealt with! The romance between Finn and Catrina was very slow burning, but with obvious reasons, and their story was sweet. The ending was lovely enough for a smile although I do wonder about the part involving Finn's wife. I think perhaps it wrapped up a little too easily. Other than that the book gets a thumbs up from me.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers' copy of this book.
