Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
The story has two main women characters that the story focus on and how their lives change from one plane crash. I enjoyed this book as it had twists and turns along the way, not knowing what was going to happen next. I would read another book from this author.
Why did it take me so long to pick this up? I wish I'd read it sooner.
This novel follows 2 women and their lives as they navigate through the unfortunate situation they find themselves in because of their husbands life choices.
I love that this is told from the wives point of view and not the husbands. It was a refreshing change.
To many people, this story may seem unbelievable but I am under no illusions that this story, albeit with some creative license, is entirely possible in todays world. No one wants to believe the world is built and run like this but that is what makes this book work. It encourages the reader to question the premise. Could this really happen? Does this really happen?
The book described in three words: corruption, desperation, love
*Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% my own and I was not paid to review this*
I really struggled with this book. I just could not get into it and I could not relate to the characters. Hopefully the tv series will be better?
Oh wow what have I just read ? Well what I’ve read was a book that was so fantastic I will be recommending it to a my book loving friends. A mystery thriller filled with suspense and intrigue. Loved it.
A fascinating, fast-paced thriller with strong and smart female leads.
This novel is the best kind of thriller gusty, incredibly clever, and absolutely chilling! Once you start it the only reason you'll stop reading is you have got to the end!
Thanks to Mulholland Books & Netgalley for sending me this in exchange for an open and honest review.
Ps. I can't wait for the TV series!
This was an unusual thriller, showing a depth of knowledge of the subject of finance, as well as being an exciting and engrossing read. It was a shame the author didn't do a little bit more research, for instance the currency in Switzerland, but although I would normally drop a point for things like that, I did enjoy the book, the twists and the suspense, so it still gets five stars.
Thanks to netgalley for the review copy of this thrilling read. This was really a gripping read, until the very end. I enjoyed it, and can't wait to read some more of Ms Alger's work.
This was a non starter for me. I had high hopes but I didn't even make it 10% of the way through and had to DNF. Very difficult to get into.
It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did, I found it enjoyable. It is a good thriller with plenty of suspense, twists and turns that I think a lot of people will enjoy.
Very sorry but I'm really just not getting into the story, its not even remotely grabbed my attention I'm afraid. Shame as I had been looking forward to reading it.
Decided to put in this section purely because the don't give feedback section, doesn't help feedback ratio, even when giving feedback.
I feel I've been through the wringer with this one; my heart pounded more than once - what a read!!
Annabel Werner is beyond shocked when her husband dies in a plane crash; living in Switzerland she is far from her home in New York and has no one else to rely on upon herself.
Marina Tourneau is looking forward to marrying her perfect man; Grant Ellis is anything she - or anyone else - could ever want in a husband, and giving up her journalism career comes as part of the package. While the couple are in Paris for a rare and romantic break, her boss contacts her with a request to do something secretive while she is there. Does she really want to give up her hard-earned break to get involve in she knows-not-what? And if she does, where will it end?
A stunning read, this novel had me glued firmly to the pages and racing through the story, desperate to find out what happens next. I have been riveted by the details .. the only comparison I can make is that it strongly reminds me of The Pelican Brief, with brave journalists and innocent bystanders caught in an investigation they neither wanted or asked for. After a slower beginning while we got to know the characters, the story is very fast-paced and SO exciting! I'm really impressed that it's going to be turned into a tv series starring Rosamund Pike - I'm sure she'll do it great justice and I will certainly make sure not to miss it - even though I know the ending! Beautifully written and extremely well-planned with plenty of twists and turns, I most definitely recommend this book to lovers of a damn good thriller!
My thanks to publisher Hodder & Stoughton for my copy via NetGalley. This is my honest, original and unbiased review.
The dangerous world of whistleblowing.
Marina Tourneau, a journalist, is on holiday in Paris with her fiancé Grant Ellis, celebrating their engagement, when her mentor and editor, Duncan Sanders calls her. He wants her to meet with a contact who will supply the information he’s been searching for eight years, that Morty Reiss, is not only alive but living off the money, he'd stolen from his clients in one of the biggest Ponzi schemes ever uncovered in the USA. She agrees to meet with his contact. Just hours later she hears that Duncan Sanders has been shot dead at his home.
Annabel is married to Matthew Werner. He works for Swiss United, and they live in Geneva in a beautiful apartment supplied by the bank. We first meet her as she’s waiting for Matthew to return home after a business trip. Instead, when the bell rings, and she opens the door, it’s to be told that her husband and his client, travelling back from London by private plane, have crashed in the Bauges Mountains and that he is missing.
Both David and Matthew died on the same day. Both Marina and Annabel must try to find out what happened.
A brilliant storyline. Ponzi schemes have always fascinated me as has the Swiss banking system. Cristina Alger has meticulously researched the banking world. As a result, this book is entirely plausible, as is that of the journalists working tirelessly around the globe to uncover and expose corruption. This book is a dedication to both whistle-blowers and journalists.
Unfortunately, I have one problem, the copy I received via NetGalley was filled with spelling and grammatical errors. The one that irritated the most was hyphens popping up on every other word, making no sense at all. Such a shame, because this book deserves 5 Stars.

2.5*
'The Bankers Wife' by Cristina Alger is a plot driven mystery-thriller told from the perspective of Marina, a journalist investigating a Swiss bank, as well as Annabel, married to a banker who is missing, presumed dead, after his plane goes down over the Swiss Alps. Annabelle suspects that there may be more to her husband's untimely death than initially meets the eye...

This book was not what I expected but in a good way! It took me a little while to get into this but boy when I did it was a cracker. Bribery and corruption in high places with money being the root of all evil and the innocents and whistleblowers that get stuck in the middle and expose them. Two different stories intertwining - excellent
The Banker's Wife is the first book that I have read by Cristina Alger and it is a well paced and topical thriller.
The story is told from 2 people's viewpoint and this adds to the story
There are numerous twists and turns that keep you turning the pages and the book keeps you guessing until the end
Thoroughly recommended
A well written, enthralling read,
The characters were believable and well rounded, I loved the ending and didn’t see it coming!
Totally gripping from the first page with plenty of twists along the way. Excellent read and highly recommended
An intriguing thriller with lots of twists and turns. Complex storyline means the reader, along with the two women narrators, never know who to trust. Fast paced, it rides along,on a wave of deciet. The ending although, quite satisfactory, had a familiar ring to it. I'd read a book with a similar beginning which ended along the same lines as The Banker's Wife. It will please alot of readers who love high powered, conspiracy thrillers
A compelling thriller with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster ride. Extremely well written, intricate storyline that hooked me from start to finish.
Many thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ARC for which I have given my voluntary and unbiased review.
