Thank you to netgalley for my copy of this book in exchange for a review.
I was excited at starting this book as it isn’t my usual genre and the subject of hedge funds is not something I know anything about, but boy as soon as I started, it was like a rollercoaster of a ride and once seated there is no escaping until the ride or in this case book is over!
Matthew a banker, is killed in a plane crash leaving his widowed wife Annabel to investigate what happened to him. But this is no accident and there are people who will stop at nothing to keep this secret!
Journalist Marina uncovers information that could bring down powerful men in the financial world, but will she risk losing fiancé Grant and the privileged life they lead.
Loved the fact that the 2 main characters Annabel and Marina were strong kick ass ladies and not the faint hearted victims you often come across in books. High five to Christina Alger for making my day!
This book is addictive and I could have read it in one sitting. Looking forward to reading another of Cristina Alger’s books just give me a few minutes for my heart rate to go back to normal!!
‘The Bankers Wife’ by Cristina Alger published by Hodder and Stoughton/Mulholland Books on 24th Jan 2019 ( please note date )
Hey, well a totally different book to my usual psychological read(s)....this book is about Money, lots of it and all of it dirty!!
Set in London, Paris,Geneva and New York it follows a fascinating trail of the wealthy, the powerful and the bad as they syphon of money into Swiss offshore accounts....and it follows one private banker who facilities this.....however when he realises some of the billions his company helps to ‘hide’ is coming from terrorism he decides to try and ‘whistle blow’
Then follows the story of his wife and a whole cast of other bank workers, crooks, world leaders....and those.people who want the story to be world news....and those that dont...
Extremely fast paced, it reminded me of ‘24’, non stop action within a time frame, just when you got through one crisis, three more happened
I have always turned off when heard ‘private banking’and’Swiss Accounts’ mentioned as something I wish I had 😃😃 but was boring and complex to understand...not so in this book as the author explains it thoroughly but in a easy to understand way...kinda like ‘Private Banking for Dummies’....very interesting to learn about
I loved the glimpses into untold wealth and private resorts and clubs and descriptions of houses you, we can only dream of
There was tension throughout the book and the surprises came thick and fast
A really really good tale which I honestly enjoyed every page of, thriller describes it well as it really did the word justice
FAB 10/10 5 stars
The banker's wife by Cristina Alger.
Annabels life seems perfect But when her banker husband Mathew is found dead. His plane crashed in the alps. Annabel finds clues that his death may not be what it seems. Marina is a journalist investigating Swiss United. Together can they find out what happened to Mathew?
A fantastic read. I loved the story and the characters. Keeps you reading. 5*.
Not such a squeaky clean Bank after all. This huge Swiss bank illegally hides the illgotten gains of countries, corporations and individuals in their anonymous numbered accounts. But there is a whistleblower, or are there more than one? The wife and a female investigative reporter are drawn into a web of intrigue and assignations. Trust nobody.
A very topical thriller concerning the billions of money that corporations and individuals squirrel away money to avoid paying tax despite the fact they are extremely wealthy. People will stoop to anything to protect themselves - quite a tale of immorality. Well told and at a good pace. Well worth reading.
Many thanks to Netgalley/ Cristina Alger/Hodder & Stoughton for a digital copy of this novel which I am sure will be a great success when published. All opinions expressed are my own.
A good thriller, quick paced enjoyable read with some good twists and turns. Although slightly predictable in places. Recommended.
Firstly thank you to Hodder and Stoughton and NetGalley for this advanced copy. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was really fast paced and a really enjoyable story. The characters were really likeable apart from the baddies!! I would have no hesitation in recommending this book.
Thanks to Net Galley and Hodder & Stoughton for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
First book I have read by Christina Alger. A fast paced thriller, 3 very strong female characters, each telling their part of the story about offshore banking, Swiss bank accounts, large sums of hidden money and the criminal activities of those in power.
Annabels husband has been killed in a plane crash, Marina is a journalist caught up in the biggest story of her life and Zoe had been leaking information from the Swiss Bank to the authorities.
A very good read with A surprising twist near the end.
Well what can I say, this has bankers, journalists , money, corruption and plenty of intrigue. You don’t know who to trust and it really keeps you guessing right till the end. I genuinely couldn’t put it down and had a few late nights to ‘just finish the next chapter’. A great read
I found this quite difficult to get into, but after a while I began to get interested. Quite complex with all the diffferent characters and not knowing if they are goodies or baddies. Enjoyable.
Great read...started it on a journey and didn't really start my sightseeing properly until I had finished it! It would be easy to give away crucial twists if too much is said so beware of some reviews. The main character of Annabel is likeable and realistically not completely confident. However she shows growing determination and I wanted her to be OK. The parallel tale is different but works so well alongside. Read it for yourself!
A gripping story that kept me guessing what was going to happen till the very end. I loved how the descriptiveness of the characters and the environment paint a picture of the storyline around you
Loved the way this book was a different kind of thriller seen through the perspective of a journalist rather than a detective and through the eyes of the 'victims' wife. This was a fast paced book that kept me interested the whole way through. I loved the way there were , initially, two different stories told through the eyes of Annabel and Marina. I knew that the two stories would connect at some point in the book but it wasn't predictable and kept me guessing until near the end. Really enjoyed this and would definitely read more from this author.
Enthralling storyline. Great intertwining of separate storylines
