An uplifting story about a group that have been friends for forty years and have supported each other through cancer, divorce, infidelity and the drawbacks of getting older!!
When Claudia discovers that a local hotel is up for sale, which has separate cottages on the grounds, she comes up with a great idea. Create an older persons commune where her friends and family can all live together and support one another.
They may be in their 60’s but they soon prove that they can still fall in love and have fun, growing old is not all doom and gloom.
This is a nice easy read book. I loved the idea of growing old surrounded by friends rather than seeing a future in a care home. There are some great characters and I finished this wanting to find out what happens next to the great bunch of friends!!
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
I liked these characters and I really enjoyed the story. I always enjoy this writer's books, and this was everything I would expect from Maeve Haran.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. What an entertaining read. Story flowed and really liked the characters.
A tale of life, love and friendships from Maeve Haran. A little bit of a slow starter but picked up to be an interesting, fairly gentle tale with credible characters. Like most of this author's work - most enjoyable.
I loved this book. Admittedly, it took me time to grow fond of it. First I found the introduction a little slow and longish. But then I got to love the four friends, the protagonists of the story and started to take real interest in their life. Part of the attraction was that they are more or less my age group plus I also had to face the huge health scare of one of them.
Apart from the main protagonists the book is full of very likeable and colourful characters you like to encounter. The plot itself is really interesting although it needs a little deus ex machina at some turns.
To sum up I enjoyed reading it and was sorry when I finished it.
A fun read. I particularly enjoyed it being of the same vintage as some of the characters A perfect read for a hot sunny day. Maeve’s books are always enjoyable and just a wee bit different from the norm.
Claudia, Laura, Sally and Ella are all in their sixties and have been friends for years. All are going through significant disruption to their lives. When Claudia finds out that the local hotel is up for sale, she suggests that they should buy it and all live together as they move towards old age.
The story follows them as they deliberate whether to live together and the problems it could cause being in close proximity with each other. Together with Claudia’s eccentric parents and a mixture of family and friends they decide to give the experiment a chance.
An entertaining book with good characters, I loved Claudia’s dad Len and his robot carer Hiro, the story has nice touches of humour and was an enjoyable read.
