This is an excellent and informative book for new authors who intend to self-publish. I'll definitely suggest to my clients. Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of the ARC.
Having self-published 16 books, Barb knows what she is talking about. In this insider's guide to indie publishing, she covers the basics of editing, formatting, and even speaks about audiobooks. This 'down-to-earth' book is a perfect reference text for new authors, as well as veterans.
Recommended for those interested in publishing (indie or otherwise), book reviewers who desire to know what goes on during the publishing process, and authors who seek a well-written primer on the art and science of self-publishing.
This type of book tends to make me nervous. In many cases, they tend to be a collection of information that can be found on the web for free. Fortunately, this is not one of those books. This book focuses on the process that occurs either simultaneously (levels of editing) with the writing process and the next steps after the work is complete. This book is filled with good practical details such as getting the book cover right, acquiring an ISBN number, manuscript and file formats, the physical structure of both pages and book as a whole, computer file formats, where and how to sell your book, setting up accounts, tax information, and more.
I would have LOVED to read this book, but it disappeared from my shelf before I had chance. I won't give it one star for that, though, as it is neither the author's fault nor fair.
As someone who reads about how the Indie Authors go about writing, publishing, launching, marketing and getting an income from their books, this was golden. This book was packed full of information that will be useful to me in the future.
I was expecting to find surface level information about self-publishing a book but I was pleasantly surprised when that was not the case. Not only it's useful, currently applicable and easy to read, but also fun.
The author did a great job at sharing her knowledge with the collective and I think this is a must read for any person that wants to go the self-publishing route on their writing careers.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book provided by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are my own.
I can't believe how much information is in this book! I was expecting a basic overview of how to stick a book up on Amazon and not much else, so I was shocked to see just how much of the process this book covers. It starts out with some basic terminology used in the book world and then builds on that by describing the physical anatomy of a book. The author then continues on to describe how to actually write and prepare a professional manuscript before even starting to get into the publishing aspect of things.
This is a very thorough, detailed resource that is a must-have for anyone considering self-publishing a book. The basic information provided in the beginning sections and the appendices alone would be more than worth the cover price. I highly recommend this book.
How to Self-Publish a Book provides an insider’s guide to self publishing, whether in book or digital format. The author has 16 self-published books and knows the digital arena intimately. Her expertise has also been honed through teaching non-techies digital language in lay persons’ terms. Written in an easy style that highlights key points, with resource links and a glossary of terms, as well as step by step instructions useful for newbies and skilled authors alike.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are fully mine.

This guide is chock full of tips and tricks for the author who wants to self-publish a book, in print or e-reader format. Drozdowich clearly knows what she's talking about from personal experience. My only complaint is that unfortunately the book is not available through the distributor we use for library ordering.
Very helpful information in this book. I look forward to putting it to use once I finish the book I am currently writing.
Great book, full of up to date information that will help budding authors choose the best way for them to get published. It is easy to read, well laid out and can be read cover to cover or just dipped into. It is a good one to keep on the shelf for beginners and the more intermediate author. Very helpful and reasonably priced - thank you
