I can honestly say I've never read a Kate Hardy book I didn't like and this upholds the tradition nicely. Plenty of detail about the setting made me feel I was really there. And I loved the theme of moving on and fresh starts.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Mills and Boon Insiders for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Unlocking the Italian Doc's Heart is written by Kate Hardy and published by Mills & Boon Medical. Dr Lorenzo Conti has just found out that his toddler daughter, Florence, is not biologically his daughter and his wife has left him. He has moved to a new hospital, Muswell Hill Memorial Hospotal, in order to rebuild his life where upon he meets Jenna Harris, who is also a paediatrician. She has just taken a year out to act as a surrogate for her sister and has also split with her long term boyfriend who did not want her to give up a year of her life, slow down her caterer and have a baby for someone else. Jenna is bubbly and fun, but has trust issues, as does Renzo. Will she be able to help him get over the pain of losing his family and rebuild his life with her?
I enjoyed, but did not love this book. The trip to Verona didn't really fit with the rest of the book, although I did enjoy the detailed descriptions of the food and scenery. It is a pleasant, gentle read. Not much drama or sex. The ending is the only time there is a hint of angst but all ends well.

I did enjoy this book even though it seemed a bit disjointed in parts. Renzo had found out from his ex wife that the daughter he loved and had raised as his own was not in fact his. So when he met Jenna, despite the intense attraction, he held back from committing. There are some good medical situations included in this story which added interest, and all in all, it is a good story...just a little rushed in some areas. I would recommend it.
This is the third novel I have read In this series by this author and although I did enjoy it it felt a little disjointed at times. The trip to Lake Garda and Verona seemed shoe horned in just to have the part about Juliet’s house and disrupted the rhythm of the plot. I did enjoy it though and will keep an eye out for other novels in the series.
An excellent medical romance. Jenna and Renzo are the type of doctors you would want if your child was ill. Both have been burnt by past experiences. Jenna broke up with her douche of an ex when he didn't support her decision to be a surrogate for her twin sister. Renzo was married with a little girl, when his whole world fell apart. After finding out his daughter wasn't his and his wife leaving him.
Renzo was devastated. Its only natural they were both left with trust issues. When they first meet they get on so well, work together great. But both are wary of opening up. The path to true love doesn't always run smooth. Can they work through the issues holding back? Pick up a copy to find out.
Highly recommended for fans of romance. ARC received from Net galley as part of mills & boon insiders.
Unlocking The Italian Doc's Heart is a Mills & Boon Medical story by Kate Hardy.
Dr Lorenzo Conti has moved from the London Victoria Hospital to a less busy hospital where nobody knows him or his history. He was married and had a beautiful daughter, or so he thought. His wife left him and also informed him that the little girl wasn't his and that she was going to live with the girl's father. She cut off all ties with him, and it eats at Lorenzo every day not knowing how his little girl is. He will always think of her as his, no matter the blood ties or lack of them. It's tough dealing with his emotions, and even tougher when all his work colleagues keep giving him pitying looks. A change of hospital was definitely what he needed.
Jenna is a paediatrician at the hospital and she loves her work. She's bright and vivacious and she immediately catches Renzo's eye. Behind the bright smiles, Jenna is harbouring her own heartache. The man she loved and thought she would marry turned out to be a selfish, heartless and money driven man. She needed a sabbatical from work to help her sister in the most unselfish way possible, and her boyfriend gave her an ultimatum, him or her sister! With no regrets, Jenna chose her sister. Since then she has questioned her ability to choose a decent man and doesn't think she could ever love again because to love a man she would have to trust him and she thinks she has lost the ability to ever do that again.
There is an instant attraction between Jenna and Renzo, both of them want to fight it because of their pasts, but they keep getting drawn towards each other. Renzo can't think of moving forward in his personal life when he can't get his daughter out of his mind. Jenna thinks she can't move forward because she can't trust and she also doesn't know how he will take the news of how she helped her sister. Yet knowing that, they still end up in a passionate embrace. Can they just be friends with benefits, or will each of them help heal the others hearts?
Jenna and Renzo's romance was a sweet one, and for the most part, the reader can enjoy the sightseeing they did in London. We followed their supposed friends only courtship even to Verona where Jenna went with Renzo to meet members of his family. It was a very romantic time but didn't end quite the way I thought it was going to. I like it when a story isn't predictable.
I enjoyed the medical side of the story nearly as much as the romantic side of it, I am sure I was a nurse in another life haha! On the whole, the book was a pleasant read, not a lot of drama, and strictly behind doors sex. A nice easy summer read is the best way to describe it.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Loved this book, if you are a fan of Mills & Boon Medical series, this one is for you. To find out that the child you love isn't yours must be heartbreaking and it was portrayed really well, but jenna was perfect for him
2 - "I don’t trust my judgement anymore…" Stars.
I think this is more a case of ‘it’s not you, it’s me’, with the reading of Unlocking the Italian Doc’s Heart, Kate Hardy is an author I have read a few times before, and overall the experience has been pretty enjoyable, but I just didn’t get the emotions or feel any real connection between the characters themselves or for them myself.
Jenna and Renzo were pretty grey as a general description to be honest, and the writing style felt really dated as if this was a manuscript that has sat on a shelf gathering dust for the past 20-30 years. The story was easy reading as you would guess, but it didn’t really hit my expectation levels in relation to the events both characters had been through prior to their meeting each other.
Not a winner for me on this occasion, although I like Mills & Boon Medical titles in general, this once lacked the depth and emotional characterisation I have come to expect from this imprint.
Two gorgeous doctors both of whom have been badly injured in past wrong relationships. They seem so suited but how can they overcome all their hurts and learn to trust again? Working together in the Paediatric ward draws them closer together but will that be enough?
