This isn’t my first Lisa Jewell novel and it certainly won’t be my last. Confusing, gripping, and brilliantly plotted this is another smash hit thriller that will keep you on your toes and turning the pages. I loved that you’re not quite sure which of the expertly crafted characters you can trust. Recommend!
This was a great read with enticing and relatable characters. The plot was woven well and paced to create tension where it was needed. This was my first read by this author and I will be back for more.
I really enjoyed the book. Loved the story plot and twists. Approachable characters, realistic situations. Some descriptions or story „fillers” were tiny bit too long, but in overall - very good book and I’d read more by the author. Thank you, great job!
This was not of the same calibre as other Lisa Jewell books I've read. it was well plotted and engaging, but the ay off was a little flabby. I knew what was coming from around the half way mark, so anything I read after that felt like paint by numbers. it won't put me off reading other Jewell books because I know she is capable of so much more.
Watching You by Lisa Jewell has been on my kindle for some time now, I remember trying to read it when it first came out and struggling to settle into the pace of the book. I sat down this morning to try it again years later and have just this minute finished the last page and I am desperate to get my thoughts down straight away.
Newly married Joey has just moved in with her husband to her brother and sister in-laws house but she soon becomes infatuated with the local headteacher who lives only two doors down. Little does she know her every move is being watched.
This was certainly the right book wrong time when I read it before because put simply this is my favourite EVER book by Lisa Jewell! It did take a little patience again to get into the flow of the storyline and that is mainly due to the vast number of characters who we are introduced to but this is done on purpose, the author has been very clever in bombarding us with characters so we are distracted trying to keep up with what is going on with everyone in the book and also it throws so many suspects into the mix too so we are always kept in the dark.
Its strange I never actually liked any of the characters because I was suspicious of them all, they all had their own little quirks that tarnished their character so I never really trusted them but yet they created so much tension and intrigue that I couldn’t step away from this book.
The story did take an unexpected turn, I thought it was all going to be about Joey and her infatuation with Tom but we soon got lured down a darker twisted path and this was when my attention became truly piqued and the pace of the book quickened and all of the characters all suddenly felt real and I well and truly had the wool pulled over my eyes as I didn’t expect things to unravel the way they did.
A truly addictive, tense read that was completely unpredictable.
Found this book fascinating, a real, genuine different take on domestic violence, bullying, inappropriate relationships and growing up. Never read anything similar and loved the whodunnit idea tied into all these themes...even the fact you're not 100% sure who the victim actually is.
Great read, great author, great book
It’s true. Yes folks it’s true.
You never know what’s happening behind closed doors.
Do you live in a Community? A tight community?
Has someone moved out and a new family moved in?
Has this happened in your neighborhood?
It has in mine.
You watch…..
Whose that….
Is that the Mom, is that the Dad, oh nice car…
Do they work?
A few weeks on….
You watch…..
This was an absorbing story, it started out strong and kept heading in that direction right to the end.
I listed to this on audio and found it thrilling.
Very good narrator.
There were numerous times I considered DNFing this one, it felt like a neighbourly street drama rather than truly focusing on the predator down the road. I didn't love the introduction of what felt like a random character towards the end, only to find out what I had expected all along - Roan.
You can always rely on Lisa Jewell to keep your attention all the way through a book with her intricate plots which you have to try and unravel, which is a challenge for us who love a good psychological thriller.
As recommended as always.
What an intriguing and well-written story that provides such strong and memorable characters The book is told in a very unique way: multiple POVs combined with police transcripts. Plenty of red herrings and so many questions I could not await to find the answers to!
Lisa Jewell is always a fun and quick read. Her books pull you in from the beginning and you need to know what has happened. The only issue I had was that there wasn't enough twists and turns for me and I was able to guess what had happened. I would definitely recommend this book if you're after a psychologic thriller.
I felt like this book was a little slow to start and I was initially confused about how all the seemingly random characters were supposed to link together, however I was soon hooked and started to piece things together. Plenty of twists and turns along the way, would recommend.
Highly recommended. Lisa Jewell never disappoints and this book was no different. The book flowed really well and kept me entertained with lots of different twists and turns along the way - some obvious and some not so much. Really interesting read!
I am in charge of the senior library and work with a group of Reading Ambassadors from 16-18 to ensure that our boarding school library is modernised and meets the need of both our senior students and staff. It has been great to have the chance to talk about these books with our seniors and discuss what they want and need on their shelves. I was drawn to his book because I thought it would be something different from the usual school library fare and draw the students in with a tempting storyline and lots to discuss.
This book was a really enjoyable read with strong characters and a real sense of time and place. I enjoyed the ways that it maintained a cracking pace that kept me turning its pages and ensured that I had much to discuss with them after finishing. It was not only a lively and enjoyable novel but had lots of contemporary themes for our book group to pick up and spend hours discussing too.
I think it's important to choose books that interest as well as challenge our students and I can see this book being very popular with students and staff alike; this will be an excellent purchase as it has everything that we look for in a great read - a tempting premise, fantastic characters and a plot that keeps you gripped until you close its final page.
Another brilliant psychological thriller that I couldn’t put down. This book is full of twists and turns and will have you hooked from the very beginning..
Love this Author never read a book by her that i haven't enjoyed..
This book is also brilliant another great read what can i say i am a avid reader of this author and can not wait for her books to come out as i have read them all to date...
Well done you do an excellent job of writing....
A wonderfully twisted thriller with believable, well drawn characters. Yes, if you read enough of this genre you'll be able to guess what's coming, but it's still thoroughly enjoyable.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC without obligation.
Clear characters and a good pace and flow to the whole story.
I really enjoyed this book! I found it cleverly written with a likeable and believable set of characters that you soon begin to feel a connection with.
There are quite a number of different people within the story but the writing is clear and engaging and therefore not confusing. The story is full of twists and turns and it was a great read learning how everyone and everything becomes connected to each other by the end of the book.
I became immersed in the book and couldn't put it down. A great Lisa Jewell book if you've not read her before.
Unfortunately I read this book a while ago and seem to have missed it when writing reviews. - sadly I cant remember enough detail to give a full review.
However, thanks to NetGalley for the ARC :-)
Lisa Jewell is now a name I seek when it comes to choosing a new book to read. She has become a bit of a wizard at developing dysfunctional families and quirky characters who are little awkward and out of place. She has a keen eye for detail, particularly where people are concerned, which brings the characters alive.
'Watching You,' is a very appropriate title for this book as it appears that everyone in Melville Heights is watching each other, their main focus of attention being Tom Fitzwilliam, the much-loved headteacher of the local school, who 'turned it around!'
What are the secrets of Melville Heights and what is its connection with the murdered body found by PC Rose Pelham, and a schoolgirl's diary from 1996? Told from different viewpoints, this was really an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable read.
I give it 4 stars - and look forward to Lisa Jewell's next book very much!
