In Before Her Eyes, Jack Jordan weaves a powerful and suspenseful story of fear and discovery.
The story follows Naomi Hannah, a blind young woman living in a small, claustrophobic town, as she deals with her inability to live life to the fullest. But when she stumbles upon the body of a young woman, Naomi discovers she's the only one who can identify the killer. Now she must try to find the courage and strength to reveal his identity before it's too late.
The tension rises as the police begin hunting for the murderer and more victims are found, making the question of why the killer spared Naomi even more pressing. With each twist and turn, Jordan leads readers through the shadows and down dark paths until the shocking climax.
If you enjoy thrillers and mystery stories, Before Her Eyes will leave you breathless until the very last page. Jordan's masterful prose and vivid descriptions transport the reader to a small town with deadly secrets. This captivating book will keep you guessing until the very end.
Wow what a rollercoaster of a story right from the beginning. The story has lots of twists and turns, with the police not helping at all, except for one police officer. Just when you think the story is coming to a conclusion, something else happens and the story turns around again, especially the twist at the end.
Jack Jordan just keeps getting better and better. Each book I've read of his, is always a unique story that doesn't have that formulaic feel. Well done on another cracker of a read Jack.
I really enjoyed this; a few niggles that made it a 4 star but it really hooked me and I couldn't put I down! I really wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did, but it was a unique book and take on the thriller genre.
The book had a really good premise but I just couldn't get into it and struggled to connect with any of the characters. The pacing was good but I found some parts predictable.
Having previously read ‘My Girl’ by this author I knew I was in for a treat when I saw that this book had been released and couldn’t wait to get started!
It is a very well written psychological thriller and I absolutely loved it! It has fantastic characters that are well developed and believable.
The plot flows very well, the pace is spot on and the writing style is spot on for the story. I was hooked from the beginning and I stayed gripped by the story right to the end!
It is a brilliant piece of work and I can’t give it anything other than 5 stars – very, very highly recommended and I can’t wait to see what he releases next!!
I love a good murder plot that you can sink you’re teeth into and from the first chapter I was hooked and could have read this in one sitting.
Naomi has given up on life and has been planning her suicide, until she finds herself at a murder scene facing the murderer, but unable to see him as she is blind. Is she safe or is the murderer playing cat and mouse with her. After staring death in the face she realises she does want to live after all!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was creepy and kept me on the edge of my sofa. I didn’t know who to trust and I was kept guessing till the end.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
I absolutely loved this book! Jack Jordan's writing is gritty and fast paced...can't wait to read more of his work.
This wasn't my favourite book by Jack Jordan, I wasn't as gripped by it as I have been with previous books.
The story line had a lot of promise, but I found it lacking depth if I am honest.
It wasn't for me unfortunately
I’d heard a lot of great things about this author so I was excited to be invited onto the blog tour for his latest book, Before Her Eyes. This is a fast paced, gripping and very gory thriller which I absolutely raced through. I have a young baby so sleep is precious, but after stupidly deciding to read just one more chapter I eventually looked up from the book to check the time and realised I’d been ready for three hours! It’s a very addictive book.
The story is told from the point of view of Naomi and Marcus a Detective in the local police force who is trying to discover the truth about what is happening. This makes for a very intriguing read as it soon becomes obvious that there are a lot of secrets that people are desperate to hide.
As mentioned above this is quite a gory book with the author describing the injuries of the victims quite vividly which did turn my stomach at times. There is also quite a creepy element to the story at times, especially when describing Naomi’s interactions with the killer which actually made me jump at times. This is definitely not a book to read when you are on your own in the house as every noise makes you start after reading.
This is quite a fast paced book with lots of action and intrigue which ensures that the reader keeps reading faster and faster as the story unfolds. I didn’t have any idea who the killer was or how this story was going to end which was great for me and really added to the fun of reading the book.
This is the first book by this author I have read and I am so excited to go back and read his previous books. If you like creepy, gripping and slightly gory thrillers then you’ll love this book!
Huge thanks to Kirsty from Corvus Books for inviting me onto the blog tour and for my copy of this book.
Damn and double-damn, but Jack Jordan has delivered again! I have read multiple titles by Jack and they all received praise from me. I have to say, with Before Her Eyes, Jack opened a new bag of goodies and delivered stifling darkness in abundance.
Incredibly claustrophobic and suffocating, Before Her Eyes gets down and dirty from the off-set with the most hair-rising prologue. The story then moves the reader up close and personal with what it feels like to not be able to use one of your senses (vision) as events unfold in front of blind eyes and turns up the level of mystery by introducing the potential of a much bigger web of lies that has settled over a small town setting.
Naomi is blind but by no means helpless. Having grown up with a very supportive and encouraging adoptive mother, Naomi lives independently and works in a cafe, and with her guide dog Max, she is unstoppable. But the feeling of being unloved has taken over her soul and has left her wanting to die. She has been abandoned in the past as a child by her biological mother, she has made a life-altering decision during her marriage which ultimately lead to divorce and it’s all eating her up inside… she simply cannot take another day!
Fate, however, has other, more grim ideas for Naomi, as she comes across a murdered body and it appears the killer is still at the scene as they play a quick and sick game with Naomi before disappearing and letting Naomi walk away physically unharmed. She is now a witness to a crime with her plans to die on hold. Things go up a whole other notch when Naomi finds herself in danger and bodies start to pile up…
Enter Detectives Lisa and Marcus who are working on the case. These two are really grating off each other and not in a good way! I have no qualms stating that Lisa is a Grade A bitch! She is! I was wondering for a while whether there was going to be a turn in her character development – to make me feel bad about thinking her a bitch, but nope! Her final speech in the book simply solidified my dislike of her #sorrynotsorry
As Lisa works on the case with Marcus, clear lines are being drawn on who’s the boss and who’s the one aiming for the truth, no matter how devastating or ugly! I had so many hopes for Marcus. Some came to be true, others not… but that’s the thing with those twisty thrillers and Jack Jordan pulled off a heart-stopping final twist in the book! Boom! It left be speechless and it left me wanting to discover what happens next…
I really, really like the writing as it felt very personal, intimate and demanded my undivided attention. I have to say, because who else wags the tail other than the dog, right?, that my first hunch at who’s behind this all was right! But Jordan took me on a whirlwind through the complex plot and threw me off track a number of times! I did not expect to receive the level of multiple threads in this novel as it’s quite diferent to Jordan’s previous work, but nevertheless typically mind-blowing! 🙂 I loved it, I freaking loved it!!!
I have read two of this authors previous books so I was delighted to hear he had a new book coming out. I wasn’t disappointed as this was a brilliant read. From start to finish I was totally gripped.
Naomi is a strong character who who has been blind since birth. What she is going through at the hands of a killer is terrifying but even more so as she can’t see. I couldn’t help but admire her.
Marcus is the detective on the case. I really liked him. I didn’t like his boss Lisa.
This is an absolutely brilliant story with a gripping storyline. I seriously cannot praise this author highly enough. Looking forward to seeing what he comes up with next.
Jack is back in the most eagerly anticipated book of the year! There's nothing unusual about booklovers getting excited about books, but a new Jack Jordan book seems to whip us up into a frenzy as we all clamour to get our names on this exclusive list of early readers. I've been a huge fan of Jack Jordan since reading his outstanding debut, Anything for Her, and it's wonderful to follow the journey of this super-talented young author as he heads towards his destiny at the top of the bestseller chart.
I don't know where Jack Jordan gets his ideas from but they're all such good ones and Before Her Eyes is an absolute cracker! It sounds simple with a blind woman being pursued by a killer she can't see but the descriptions of smell, sounds and touch were so visual that I felt as if my own senses had been heightened to cope with Naomi's blindness. Jack Jordan is always so attuned to his characters that he can replicate their thoughts and feelings in the reader, without us even realising it. Whilst reading Before Her Eyes I found myself noticing smells and sounds more than usual as I tried to empathise with the darkness in which Naomi lived.
Although Naomi is understandably a very flawed character, she is a lot tougher than she thinks. Naomi will always have strong feelings towards her ex-husband, Dane, as he saw her at her worst and naturally, Naomi feels safe with him. As a blind woman, there's one thing that her other senses can't compensate for and that is the looks of admiration that Naomi receives from lovely DS Marcus Campbell. Now this really is love at first sight but unfortunately Naomi can't see it and my heart broke for Marcus as had to be content with admiring Naomi from afar.
The story of the killer terrorising Naomi's town reminded me of spiderweb cracks on a mirror; as you follow one line of enquiry and end up at a dead end, you have to return to the centre to see where the story leads you. At the centre of this web is a cold case: that of young Hayley Miller whose body has never been found. Marcus is convinced that this recent spate of killings is linked to the Hayley Miller case but his boss doesn't share the same thoughts. Marcus does a bit of digging on his own and finds that the latest victims were investigating the Hayley Miller case so he seems to be on the right track but, with a killer determined to stop the truth getting out about Hayley Miller, nobody in this town is safe.
I can guarantee that you will be glued to every single page of Before Her Eyes. I read it so fast that I feel like I need to read it again at a much slower pace to fully appreciate the glorious, visual scenes painted by Jack Jordan's powerful words. An absolutely sublime piece of fiction that entertained, amazed and down-right thrilled every inch of me. A* - you're top of the class again, Mr Jordan!
I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
A book full or tension and twist, A story told from two POV which makes this book and great thriller and police procedural. The two main characters are likeable and make this book different from others I have read. Naomi is blind and her life it put in danger when unbeknown to her she witnesses a killing. Marcus, a detective on Naomi's case will stop at nothing to make sure she is safe.
The author doesn't shy away from explaining every part of the murders and this makes the book gritty and raw.
Now books are described as sleep stealers and time stealers but Jack Jordan’s….they’re food stealers! Every time I sit down to this author’s novels I am totally absorbed and my poor family have to fend for themselves or hope that I can tear myself away for long enough to prepare a meal. The same thing happened when I read My Girl so Jack is getting a bit of a reputation in our house!
Before Her Eyes is an engrossing read, from first page to last I was hooked and had to find out who the perpetrator was (getting it wrong several times along the way). The main character Naomi Hannah is blind and lives alone with her guide dog Max (LOVE Max!!), separated from her husband Dale she is lonely and feels segregated from the community due to her condition. She often contemplates suicide and after an aborted attempt stumbles across a body, from this moment on she is catapulted into a nightmare. The killer is still at the crime scene and takes great delight in tormenting Naomi; she is the perfect “witness” after all. Her life is literally turned upside down and as well as being at the mercy of a sadistic killer she has to contend with the police doubting her testimony. There is a definite good cop, bad cop scenario in Before Her Eyes; DS Marcus Campbell is desperate to help Naomi whilst his boss, DI Lisa Elliot seems determined to see Naomi charged.
There are so many twists and turns that I was left doubting everything and everyone. At a certain points in the story I gasped out loud, no spoilers but I was NOT expecting that.
This book is definitely dark and gruesome but I love that in a story – the bloodier the better and Mr Jordan delivers in spades! I thoroughly enjoyed Before Her Eyes and have to say that Gillian Flynn needs to watch her back; there’s a new master of writing despicable characters.
I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
This book follows Naomi Hannah, who has been blind since birth. Struggling with living in a small, claustrophobic town, Naomi contemplates ending her life. But then she stumbles across the body of a young woman who has been brutally murdered. She senses someone else there at the scene - watching her. Naomi may not be able to see the killer's face, but she is still the only person who can identify him. As the police begin hunting the person responsible and more victims are discovered, Naomi is forced to answer the question on which her fate hangs; why did the killer let her live?
Wow. This was a first time read from this author and I honestly can't believe I've never read anything else of his. Jack Jordan, where have you been hiding?!?! This book was amazing! I was instantly gripped from the very first paragraph, the story drew me in immediately and make it impossible to put down! The whole plotline is very cleverly-written and just so intense. My heart was racing from beginning to end!
I genuinely felt for the main character. I felt all the emotions that she was going through! (A sign of a truly spectacular book!)
Jack Jordan definitely delivered a truly thrilling and captivating read that both scared me and left me speechless. I could go on and on about this book but I think everyone should read this book. Seriously stop what you're doing and go read it.... NOW!
Will definitely will be reading more of this author's books!
When the main protagonist is blind you know you are in for a unique thriller and I wasn't disappointed.
This book is fast paced and had enough twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout the book. It is a compelling read but I have dropped a star because somethings were just a bit too over the top.
If you don't like graphic descriptions of blood then this isn't for you.
Good storyline although a little unbelievable in parts. Liked the final twist, but would have like Marcus to have the happy ending he deserved.
The story starts with the main character Naomi in a pretty unhappy state - on a clifftop considering ending her life. She puts it off and on the way home is a bit concerned when her guide dog Max starts to act strangely. When she hears the news the following morning that a womans body has been found on the road she came home via, she understands Max's behaviour and realises she must have walked past the poor woman and possibly the killer. What follows is the story of either the unluckiest woman alive or someone who is the target of an evil vendetta.
I found this a bit of an uncomfortable read mainly due to finding some of the situations that a disabled person would put themselves in unrealistic. Also, the majority of the characters were wholly unlikable, with the exception of Marcus and Max the dog!
On the whole, this was a solid mix of police procedural and psychological thriller that did keep me reading just because I really wanted to know what was actually going on because I literally had no clue!!
Before Her Eyes is a pacy and unpredictable psychological thriller, a real page turner which I read in one sitting.
Naomi is blind and having a difficult time. When bodies start piling up around her she has to fight not only her own demons but suspicion from the police and the community.
There are plenty of twists and turns and a highly engaging and sympathetic character in Naomi, giving the reader a different viewpoint and is beautifully written all the way.
Jack Jordan does small town angst very well and this is cleverly plotted to maximum effect, with changing perceptions and a sharp edgy feel.
Overall a banging good read. Recommended.
