A frenetic thriller that had me hooked from the first page. Sara Eden doesn’t know who she is but she does know she must trust no one. It soon becomes apparent that there are forces out there who know exactly who she is and would like to get close up and personal. Sara not only has to discover exactly who she is but also has to try and stay alive.
The narrative moves backwards and forwards in time drawing out Sara’s backstory. It is eminently readable and, although you do need to suspend disbelief a little, it is very entertaining. The ending suggests that we might get to see Sara again and I would welcome that.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley and publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.
I've just finished this book, having started it last night! I thought I knew where this book was going when I started it, the basis of a thriller being laid out with a young girl at the heart of it. I twisted and turned with the flow of the book, jumping over the years back and forward, taking in more characters as they appeared. Then the story seemed to change track completely, took on a whole other direction and became an espionage tale of sorts with tech galore! I'm not sure what to make of it, but can see more books following with a series based around the same characters. I can also see it on a big screen.
Don't expect to get to know the main players much, but I suspect this was deliberate and there is more to come.
Recommended if you like surprise and several genres in one book!
This is a solid espionage thriller from a new to me author and on the whole, I did enjoy it. Sara Eden is a dynamic character with such an interesting backstory that you can't help but be intrigued by her. By the end, I did wonder if maybe there were more books planned with this particular anti heroine in mind.
I think that I actually preferred the more fast paced intro chapters, as I felt immediately drawn into the world of shadowy military intelligence. Unfortunately as the story unfolded and more and more characters were introduced, the plot began to thin and for me at least, to fall apart. Ties between some characters were tenuous at best, it was hard to know who was who or what the motives were for certain actions. By the time I got to what I suppose was a grand reveal, I was definitely less invested. Instead of trying to draw the reader round the houses for the sake of 'intrigue' I think more linear storytelling would have worked better. The story of Sara's persecuted female family members over generations held more than enough promise for an excellent novel.
This book was everything you want from a secret government thriller. It had me hooked from the start, who was Sara Eden? Why was she submerged in a bath tub? And why could she not remember anything? From the second half it started teetering towards a genre I’m not heavily interested in. However there was just a small amount to make it stand out from the crowd. Overall this was a very thrilling and enjoyable read.
I thought this was going to be a crime novel from the description. I missed the bit at the end which likened it to a hollywood thriller so I'm to blame for not reading the blurb carefully enough. It is indeed very much an action film type of book, full of implausible happenings, people almost getting killed but yet able to run around moments after. Not my sort of thing at all. I couldn't relate to anyone in the book: Sara, the main protagonist, a child at the beginning, trying to find out who she is. Lots of government agents trying to kill people, a tramp (who was one of the few likeable people in the novel, a business man who was trying to build his business by being intuitive. No, not for me I'm afraid. I do think though it would make a film that lots of people will like and I'm sure if you like spy thrillers, you'll like this.
Trust No One by Anthony Mosawi a thrilling four-star read. I really didn’t know what to expect about this book, when I read the blurb it sounded interesting, but it turned out to be not what I expected but still very good. If you like your stories complex and interesting and one that kicks off with a bang then this is one for you. Its so hard not to give spoilers as there is so much more going on in the story. Go give it a try and get sucked into Sara’s story.
Great grandmother was classed as a witch. Mum was an incubator. Sara could be the greatest asset.
This was an excellent read with an opening for more to come.
Thank you for providing me with a copy of the book. Expected something different and it wasn't really for me.
I went into this book expecting one thing and it turned out to be something entirely different. I think that's the reason i didn't enjoy it very much, i felt mislead. Some of the story was hard to follow and a lot of aspects didn't add up for me.
Having finished this book, I'm hoping there will be more to come, not because it blew me away but more to see if another dose would leave me more satisfied and maybe tie up some of the loose ends I felt were left. It is all a bit far fetched and If it were a film, I could see some parallels with James Bond / mission Impossible type capers.
This is a good story and the writing is of quality however, the construction of the book let it down. I was hard placed to decide who was the lead character as ‘Sara’ got lost for so long. More and more characters were introduced without any real linkage to each other and eventually my commitment to the book got lost. I nearly gave up several times (even at 70%) but dug in deep and carried on. If I am to ‘care’ for a character, I need some information of where their life is at across time. Not a satisfying read but there was enough to like to consider reading further books by this author.
I thought this was going to be a crime thriller but it turned out to be espionage! Now, I normally do not read espionage thrillers at all, they don't appeal to me. This one was enjoyable though!
A really cool, edgy thriller about secret government goings on, with a feisty and engaging main heroine who has no idea who she is or where she came from. But boy is she going to find out...
The plot races along with secrets uncovered along the way, there are some beautiful set pieces and a wonderful sense of adrenaline - I enjoyed every fast and furious moment of this one and read it in one sitting.
Ok it's a little far fetched but also strangely believable and this is one of those fun, perfect for an afternoon off, clever and speculative novels that I always thoroughly enjoy.
Recommended.
Good espionage, sci-fi type thriller. An interesting concept of mind control.....beyond reality but a clever idea. Having got to the end, this is obviously the first part of what could become quite a series and would also make a good film concept. To begin with I did not relate well to Sara, and indeed found it somewhat confusing as to when we were reading about her, or someone else. But then that is the way the book works; keeping you guessing. In the last 4 chapters, all becomes clearer but then leaves you hanging; waiting for the next book I presume.
Wow this book had me gripped from start to finish. I really hope there will be another one. Loved Sarah and Caleb and would be great to read more about them. I also think it would make a brilliant film
Sara Eden knows very little about herself. In her quest to find out more she starts getting momentary flash backs but as yet she's not sure what they mean. Who is the man in the photo she holds? And why does it say “Don't trust this man” on it? As she discovers military intelligence are hot on her heels, she knows she must get answers...and quick
This is certainly a fast moving story with plenty going on. I'm not really into spy thrillers so found it a bit hard going for a while but the more I read the more things came together. My special thanks to Michael Joseph Comms for my copy via NetGalley. It gets four stars from me.
Sarah Eden, a ten year old girl is found in a makeshift sensory deprivation tank. There is a photograph of a man with her and a not on the reverse telling her not to trust him. She has no memory of who she is or how she got there
I found this book quite confusing with the different timelines in the story and seemingly unconnected events.
I felt it wasn’t nearly long enough, a lot more detail could have been included, making the story clearer and giving more background to the characters.
Having said that it is the type of book that I really enjoy, love the skills that Sarah seems to have and enjoy the mix of IT and hackers.
I hope there is a sequel with more depth and more mystery and intrigue.
At ten years old, Sarah Eden is found trapped in a water bath used as a homemade sensory-depravation chamber. No one has any idea why she has been put there and neither has Sarah because she has had her mind wiped by the process. She only knows her name because a cassette player taped to her head keeps repeating the phrase “My name is Sarah Eden”. Apart from a cheap necklace and a few scraps of paper, there is a Polaroid of a man, accompanied by a handwritten note which says, “Don’t trust this man.”
I began reading this book thinking it was a crime novel, but soon found out it was somewhat higher octane. What unfolds is quite complex, particularly as the timelines jump around, until they finally settle down quite a way through the book. If this style of writing does not appeal to you then this is a book to stay away from.
As a thriller it works well and the action scenes do hang together in a coherent way. Trust No One is written as a thriller, so there is little time to really dig into the characters as people. But then again, the disjointed way of telling the story did reflect Sarah’s emotional isolation and the difficulties she encounters in trying to piece together who she really is. The ways in which she does this are often huge leaps of the imagination of fiction, but this is what this kind of writing is all about.
This is a debut novel and does at times have a sense that the author is feeling his way through the imaginative story. But Trust No One has the sense of the beginning of a series in which the team of interesting characters that is assembled within it will play a key role in adventures to come. I would certainly be interested in seeing where this is all going because Trust No One has a well thought out ensemble cast and story arc which “has legs”.
Clearly positioned in the thriller genre, Trust No One might occasionally feel as if certain aspects of the plot have been too carefully worked to make everything fit. But this is unalloyed entertainment and should be read as such. One to pick off the airport bookshelf and consume with a cool drink under the umbrella in a warm holiday destination.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Michael Joseph for inviting me to read an advance copy of Trust No One, a stand alone thriller set in London.
In 1993 a ten year old girl is found in a makeshift sensory tank, a photograph nearby entitled "don't trust this man". She repeats "My name is Sarah Eden" and has no memory. Now she lives off grid as far from the men chasing her as she can.
I found this a difficult novel to rate but, based purely on my personal reading experience, I have chosen 3*. It is clearly clever, well written and plotted and it is tense, exciting and mysterious but ...
I got completely lost in the first half of the novel with its shifting timeline and perspective and random events. I assume it is designed to intrigue and draw the reader in but, being a simple soul, I like to be able to understand what is going on. Fortunately much of it, but definitely not all, is explained in the second half and I still don't understand the motivation of some of the characters. I also like some realism or, at least, the possibility of realism that I can relate to or try to believe so superpowers and mind control don't cut it. Lastly it is quite a technical novel with lots of computer manipulation and I'm too old to find it fascinating or even interesting - broad brushstrokes would have done for me.
I think Trust No One will appeal to many readers with its hi-tech tricks, novel premise, twists and old fashioned motive but I just didn't get it.
So Sara a young girl not even a teenager yet is found in a dive to put it mildly with a junkie and just a cheap necklace and a photo of a man with the words do not trust this man. Plus thats her earliest memory she has, but then not all is as it seems for this may not be just a unfortunate girl well would be a bit of a boring read if it was. Nite this is anything but a boring read I would put this as one of your must read this year books. Nothing is predictable because the next page will probably take you where you never expected to go so you won't want to put it down. Who is the villain and who is the good guys it can change as often as the chapters do. It feels like this has to be part one of a very good series please Anthony.
I have been given a free copy of this book from NetGalley in return for a honest review and i honestly think you will love it if your like me and enjoy surprise and twists and well you will see.
