I loved this. The characters are richly drawn and multi-faceted, and seeing the story from their own points of view makes it even more interesting as the plot layers are revealed one by one. Some are predictable, some less so, but the twists and turns throughout the story keep you invested in Mel, Abi, Liam and Ben, and hold your attention right through to the dramatic climax.
A brilliantly written story with twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. This story follows two women revisiting their friendship after years apart. You may have read similar books to this, but this one is worth a read.
I love a good Adele Parks book and I Invited Her In was a riveting read.
Abi and Mel became best friends at university until Mel discovered she was pregnant and moved away. Their lives have taken different directions; Mel is now married with 3 children and Abi is a TV star in America married to her university boyfriend.
Fast forward 17 years later and Abi’s marriage has fallen apart. She contacts Mel through social media and Mel invites her to stay in the family home. Abi is all the things Mel is not, but their friendship seems to thrive until circumstances take a dark turn and Mel is left to wonder how their lives have been turned upside down.
I Invited Her In is a story of secrets, manipulation and revenge with several twists which is well worth reading.
I've been reading Adele Parks' books for many years now, and I have never been let down once by her writing - and nor was I with the eerie I INVITED HER IN. This chilling book tells the story of uni friends Abi and Mel. Having found herself pregnant and alone at 19, Mel flunked out of university and began a life of single motherhood with her baby, Liam. Abi, meanwhile, snagged a handsome and enigmatic tutor and moved to the US to a glossy life in front of the TV cameras.
Then one day, many years later, Abi's marriage falls apart. Seeking the solace of her oldest friend, she turns to Mel - now married with two more beautiful children, a wonderful husband and a happy home in suburbia. The wine is cracked open, the stories about the old times overflow and Mel's home fills with the sounds of laughter and the pleasure of a friendly guest. But did Abi run to Mel for help because she's the one who knows Abi best, or is it Abi who knows Mel best of all...?
This pot-boiler of a book starts off nice and frothy, with a lovely interplay of sisterhood and female friendship, and what it's like to look back on old times and fond memories. But all too soon we find that there are secrets dwelling beneath the surface - everyone is hiding something and there is much at stake, more than anyone ever thought.
I INVITED HER IN is sharp and needling; it's a stark look at how the decisions we make and the secrets we keep can skew and twist into the darkest of motivations. It's an exploration of the psyche of women when they are scorned, lied to, lied FOR and lied about. The big revelation you often find in the final quarter of the book actually happens around the halfway mark, with the fallout forming more of the plot than you might expect. This serves to completely up-end the theory of the "sagging middle" because, believe me, there are no slow patches in this book. The secrets and lies keep coming, the relationships changing, and even down to the final few pages we still find out things we didn't know about before. It's a very satisfying read and a deep and incisive look at relationships and how they can play out in the worst of circumstances. Definitely recommended.
The glamorous Abi is a demon - we find out just how Machiavellian right at the end. Poor Mel is swept along for the ride and has no idea of the destruction about to erupt - destruction that she has unwittingly set in motion by inviting Abi back into their lives. This book is gripping until the very final moments.
When this started, I was intrigued and liked the writing. Then there was an overlong midsection which took far too long to get the villain to her endpoint, which was obvious from the start, so didnt need quite so much time to set up. However, after about 70% in, the pace and tension picked up considerably and I was pretty much hooked until the end (which I found too forgiving!) So, something of a rollercoaster of a review, hmm? :) Basically, I recommend for a not-too-taxing summer read. I also liked the fact that I had no idea it was a mixed-race marriage until it was made explicit - nice challenging of lazy assumptions on my part.
A gripping Adele Parks psychological thriller. This tale certainly grips one with it's many twists and turns and keeps the attention to the last. I didn't, unfortunately, take to either of the main female characters lovely Melanie who I started to get irritated and exasperated with as she fell under the spell of her charismatic glamourous friend, Abigail, who was just too unbelievably manipulative, and lacking in even basic manners.
The plot good and enthralling but Melanie was just too fawning and accommodating to allow Abigail take over her life and weakly allows her beloved family to take second place. Abigail is just a spoilt woman, just nasty and vindictive. A tale of complete contrasts, but the ending is unexpected and, actually quite fitting.
I read this book in one sitting on a rainy Sunday, once I started it I just had to know what was going to happen next, a real page turner!
Quite slow to get started but once it did I was gripped! I love these friends gone bad type books and this one is one of the best out there. A must read!
Certainly a slow burner, however once fully immersed in the story, it is a hit!
This is another one of the "Toxic Friendship" novels I have read this year. I LOVE THEM! This one ticked all my boxes.
The story follows two very strong female leads, who you want to shake because they are infuriatingly naive or just a horrible person. I have never read a novel by Adele Parks and I was impressed, I will certainly be looking out for more by this author.
If you are looking for a dark, twisty tale then this is the book for you.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for letting me leave an honest review.
I devoured this book in a day. It wasn’t full of twists and turns and I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next.
The characters were brought to life in the description the author used. I actually felt I was living Melanie’s life.
I need to read more books by this author to get another fix.
Fantastic book, I will be highly recommending it.
Brilliance !!
I ave read a few of these "toxic friend" type of novels, and this is not one of the best. It is predictable and the characters are not particularly likeable. Thre is an unexpected twist right at the end, though, so an extra star for this.
I am afraid I didn't enjoy this book I didn't like the main characters and couldn't care what happened. It is my fault I chose the book, but it wasn't what I thought it was going to be.Hopefully others will enjoy it more than I did. Thanks to the publishers and netgalley for an ARC.
Abi gets in touch with her old friend Mel after the break up of her marriage and comes to stay. Although she never seems to want to leave. What is her agenda? Friendship? Or something more sinister? This book is well-written and discusses the them of being a single mum. I'm not sure either Mel or Abi change much as characters in the book but the book keeps you interested and wanting to find out what Abi's agenda is. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me review this book.
Mel has a perfectly happy life in suburbia after many years as a single parent. A reconnection with her best friend from university who has had a glittering career in the USA makes Mel question whether or not she actually is content with her life. But the friendship gets darker and jealousies surface. What are Abigail’s real motives and can Mel keep her life together? An engrossing read; the ending was a little too contrived, but nevertheless I recommend this as a real page-turner.
Took me a little while to get into this book and half way through I knew where the story was going, but then I couldn’t put it down. A brilliant read and would thoroughly recommend. Thank you Netgalley for the read.
Such a strong story of friendship, betrayal in the most hurtful and painful way, relationships and the necessity of being clear and transparent with family and close friends, as the future can bring about different consequences.
This was the first book by this author that I have read. I had heard about this author before and even seen some of her books but hadn't read any of them until now.
I really enjoyed this book. For me it was a little slow to start but progresses well with lots of twists and turns as the storyline moves forward. While reading I thought I had worked out how the book would end, but it turns out I was wrong and actually preferred the way it actually ends, to my version.
Each chapter is written in the view point of the characters in first person, which I liked as it allows the reader to see how events that have happened in the past and what are happening now effects the characters personally. The characters are well developed.
Overall the book is well written and I found it easy to pick it up and get engrossed in it without realising that I had been reading for hours rather than the 30 minutes that I had allocated.
I would like to thank NetGalley and HQ for my eARC in return for an honest and unbiased review.
I’ve only recently discovered Adele Parks, but think of all the books of hers that I’ve read, this is the best.
Ooh, where to start with this fabulous book. At first I thought it was just going to be a story where a man allows himself to be seduced by his wife’s best friend and I was thinking that would be it but no, Adele Parks is so much better than that. When the first twist comes it is so much darker than I ever expected and then they keep on coming. With two strong female lead characters - both that you could shake at times for either their naivety or their scheming- this is a book that you cannot just put down. Wonderful.
