The debut novel from a London journalist, The Plus One is a bit like eating candy floss when you know that you should be eating salad. It is a romp very much in the style of an early Jilly Cooper novel updated for the noughties.

Polly works for a society magazine called Posh. (Think Heat magazine crossed with Tatler.) Peregrine, the editor, is always on the lookout for the next big society story but Polly is normally covering aristocratic babies and garden parties.

Polly enjoys her life and things are ticking over nicely. She has a large circle of friends but no significant other so never has a plus one to take to weddings or parties. When best friend Lex announces her wedding the pressure is on to find a “plus one” to go with her.

It’s an easy if predictable read but the characters are fun so its a good way to while away a sunny afternoon.

An okay enough book to read but not the 'laugh out loud' one that we were promised, or at least I didn't laugh out loud once!

I really wanted to like this book, but I found it very difficult to connect with the characters. I don't feel it's the book I feel it's me. This book appealed to me on many levels but now was not the time to connect with it, so I am going to wait a few weeks and try again with it. And then if I feel that connection I will be posting my review online.

I absolutely loved this book. Wonderful humour and a real feel-good read.
Polly is a great character, the thirty something protagonist, is a single, stuck in a less than great job and lacks direction in life. I think everyone can relate to this, especially myself at the moment.
I thought Susan was funny and have definitely had similar conversations with my own mum in the past.
I really felt for Polly and there were bits of the book where I wished I could reach in and give a shake or hugs.

Will she meet her Prince Charming in the end??

Laugh out loud funny, the story of Polly following her adventures at Posh! magazine. Really enjoyable beach read.

Polly had been single forever and still working for Posh magazine so when she is given an assignment to write about playbook Jasper she is not expecting to like him.......... his reputation definitely precedes him! Having to spend the weekend with him at his castle.... yes castle.... she soon changes her mind and is definitely drawn to him..... can she have an actual plus one at her friends wedding!

A lighthearted fun book with lovely characters, predictable but worth reading and perfect for the beach

Polly Spencer is 30, working in an unfulfilling job and worst of all has been single for as long as she can remember. Her job as a writer for aristocratic loving magazine Posh! sees singleton Polly tasked with writing a profile on Playboy Jasper Milton and she is invited to stay at his family castle for the weekend. Surrounded by his eccentric family and friends and learning more about him Polly starts to wonder if he really deserves the reputation he has earned and before she knows it the pair are an item. The timing is perfect for Polly as her best friend is set to get married and for once she has a plus one and doesn’t have to dread yet another wedding sitting alone. But Jasper is a Marquess and lives a life of wealth and entitlement which is in complete contrast to Polly, so can they make it work?

The Plus One is chick-lit gold combining the perfect mix of humour, romance and heartache to make a fabulously fun read. It’s full of colourful characters, especially Jasper’s ‘posh’ friends who are hilariously funny! Protagonist Polly’s romantic and often ‘sexy’ encounters are written in such a refreshingly honest way, even those that are so cringeworthy they make you want to cover your eyes and hide! There are a few more serious moments thrown into the mix too as Polly helps support her widowed Mother whilst trying to balance her job, her love life and her duties as Maid Of Honour too. These moments are well written and at times emotional but provide a fantastic balance with the humorous and fun sections.

For me this book is reminiscent of Bridget Jones and equally as funny, it’s such an easy, light-hearted read ideal for devouring on the beach or snuggled under the duvet at home with a brew. Like many novels of this genre the storyline is at times a little predictable, but this didn’t detract from my enjoyment, it was just what I needed after reading a whole host of thrillers and mysteries of late. If your looking for a book that’s nice and easy to blast through and doesn’t need too much analysing then this is perfect, just put your feet up and enjoy!

Fun, bubbly and romantic with plenty of hot love scenes and 21st- century humour and wit.

The characters are vivid and the relationships dynamic. A simple plot is the charm of this type of book. There are characters to meet and get to know and romance to enjoy. This book delivers a fast-paced, humorous story, that's easy to read, the perfect place to escape to plus one or not.

I received a copy of this book from HQ via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

It's what I expected.
Writing is descriptive, but the people are cardboard cut outs.
Sorry , it was just too obvious, and I didnt relate to any of it.
Thanks for a copy to review.

An enjoyable, easy read that would be the perfect holiday read. Laugh out loud one-liners mixed well with emotionally charged oarts made this a really good mixed bag.

A good story that is a bit more enrapturing than your standard romance novel. It is more than just about a love life as there is also a lot on friendship and family too and what is important in a relationship.

I struggled to get into this book, when I originally read the description it intrigued me and made me want to pick it up and read it immediately. I'm hoping that I've been struggled to get into the book because I've not been reading much lately, and I've been struggling to get into most books. I'm hoping to try again in the future!

This was a good read with humour throughout. I absolutely loved the character of Jasper and his eccentric and somewhat mad family. He is so set in his ways that it’s hard for him to commit to a relationship with Polly. I honestly was rooting for them to stay together throughout the story.

Polly is a funny character. The situations she finds herself in through her job provide a lot of funny moments.

All in all this is a great read for anyone looking for an easy book to enjoy.

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a copy.

The Plus One is an enjoyable book that I skipped through in a couple of days. There are some funny parts, some predictable parts and some cringeworthy parts but all in all a good read.

Thank you to NetGalley, HQ and the author for he chance to review.

Urg. This is a toe curlingly bad plot. Well written, but that does not save the cliche fairy princess young adult storyline and saccharin sudden - I've reached the end of the book and here is the magic happy - ending.

Amusing and funny look at life as a single thirty year old. Polly is a great character who after many trials and tribulations finds true love.

This book was rather predictable with stereotypes, and not the least bit realistic.
It felt like it was trying too hard to follow a formula but not achieving the desired result.

I would not recommend it as there are funnier books written in this genre.

This was a fun read, definitely a book for the beach. Nothing too deep to think about so great while sunning yourself.
