*My Lovely Wife* by Mark Lukach is a beautifully written memoir that bravely explores the impact of mental illness on a marriage and family. With honesty and openness, Lukach addresses the challenges of his wife's battle with bipolar disorder, shedding light on the struggles and the resilience required to navigate this journey together. The subject matter is undeniably heavy, yet Lukach’s candid storytelling makes this a remarkable and touching narrative. His portrayal of both the highs and lows—moments of love, despair, and hope—offers readers an authentic glimpse into the realities of living with a loved one’s mental illness. Lukach’s book is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, a testament to the strength of love and the enduring commitment required to face such challenges.
The task of repopulating the senior library has been an exciting and daunting task aS in a boarding school our aim is to encourage all members of the community to read. Because of this, I have been searching down a wide and diverse range of books to read that will entice a wide cross-section of the school to come in, browse and find books that they love.
Books like this will ensure that the senior students in the school see the library as a diverse, modern and exciting place with books that speak to them and they want to recommend to their friends, classmates, teachers and tutors.
It is an engrossing and exciting read with fully-formed characters and a plot that ensures that it's hard to look away. It is as far from formulaic as it is possible to be and kept me up far too late in order to finish it. I immediately wanted to read all of this writer's other books as I loved their voice and found that it really drew me into the story and made me think about it even when I'd stepped away from this tale.
This is a thought-provoking read which I'm sure will be a popular and well-read addition to our new library; I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to read it and I know that the students are going to absolutely love it too!
A powerful, beautifully written memoir that looks at the loving someone who is in mental distress. It's heartbreaking and life affirming in equal measure. I struggled to put the book down.
What a brave man and also a brave family to relate the spiral of mental health so honestly and with little regard for how they may be perceived. It was an emotionally hard book to read and must have been as difficult to write. I particularly appreciated the episodes that actually didn’t put Mark in a very good light even though in my head I was shouting at him to stop micromanaging everything and take a step back to assess what would be best for Guilin rather than doing the typical man thing of having to be the problem solver. This book has given me an insight into what it must be like to live with a disorder, both as a sufferer and a carer. I wish the whole family well in their continued battle with this condition.
Heartbreaking, breathtaking, refreshing true story of a love which endures through the worst of times. Made me value my own health and relationships.
I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘My Lovely Wife: A Memoir of madness and Hope by Mark Lukach’ in exchange for my honest unbiased review.
This book is about love and life. How the marriage vows ‘in sickness and in health’ are actually practiced to their true meaning.
Marks love for his wife who is suffering from a mental illness and psychosis is totally unconditional.
It is a wonderful read-As expected it is emotional, raw and moving.
You may need the tissues.
A very emotional and hard hitting story about how mental health can and does effect life as you have known it. This is a great story and the author is so brace to have managed to put this into a book. What a family and I wish them all the very best!
Aww I loved My Lovely Wife, I could not put it down.
It was emotional, funny and heartbreaking. Written by Mark on the difficult times supporting someone through a mental health illness.
A thought provoking read.
Sometimes a title of a book stands out and cries out to be read and for me this screamed “read me”
From the first page you get a deep sense that Giulia and Mark, are in a very loving relationship. When she gets a new job she doubts herself and isolates herself from Mark. This is the first chink in their relationship!!
I really felt for Mark having to watch the one you love slide into despair and not being able to help is soul destroying. This book beautifully dealt with mental health and the battles it entails. There is no quick fix, you have to learn how to individually deal with it as every situation is different.
This book will stay with me long after reading it, poignant and thought provoking!!
Thank you to netgalley for my copy In exchange for a review.
Parts of this book moved me a great deal and made me thankful that my brief period of mental illness was not more severe. Lukach catalogues the symptoms and treatments his wife experienced in great detail without sensationalism and without compromising her dignity. However, a recurrent thread through the book is how successful, happy and perfect their life was. This is fine up to a point in that it shows that mental health problems do not discriminate. However, it becomes a bit repetitive and eventually seems a bit self-satisfied. Even the title takes up this theme. I think this book would have been massively improved by adding some of Giulia's recollections of events, particularly if this is to give hope and reassurance to sufferer's and their families.
This book is a heartbreaking and honest read from the unusual viewpoint of the husband. Quite often these books are based on the viewpoint of the person with the mental health issues so if was refreshing to read from a loved ones point of view. This book is sad but also a take on how families deal and live with mental health issues. Through all the tears in this book is ultimately a beautiful love story during some very hard times
