Kirsty and her family move to Wales to open up a guesthouse in a small village. This is a whodunnit with quite a few red herrings thrown in to keep you guessing. It is an easy read with likeable characters and a plot that will keep you turning the pages.
Kirsty and her family make a life changing move from London to South Wales to start a new life running a guest house. The first guest is her estranged cousin Selena along with her ill daughter Ruby. Selena had been prone to lying in the past so Kirsty is very wary of letting her into her life again. Slowly more family members and guests arrive. A death occurs. But how did it happen? Was it accidental? Secrets run deep...
I loved this book. Great read and had me guessing till the end
Many thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read Do Not Disturb by Claire Douglas. Another great novel by Claire. Lots of tidbits to keep you interested in the storyline. Love how the setting of mountainous Wales near the Breacon Beacons set the dark story. A haunted house. Could it be the ghosts of the Old Rectory at play? Really enjoyable and another unputdownable book bu Claire!
Starting at the murder this thriller then goes back to tell the story of how the characters ended up where they did. Kirsty moves to a Welsh town to run a guesthouse, escaping something in London, Kirsty needs a fresh start. When one of her first guests is someone Kirsty was hoping not to see, everything starts going wrong which leads Kirsty to wonder if moving away was the right move.
A fast paced thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Kirsty and her family move to Wales to open a guest house and start over.
Sounds ideal...however when Kirsty’s cousin Selena turns up things start to change and it’s far from ideal.
A well written book that was easy and quick to read. A page turner it kept me wanting to know what’s happening next.
Great cover also
This is a great story that starts off quite slow but then it really kicks in.
Kirsty and Adrian move back to Wales and buy an old property to turn into a guest house. Kirsty’s Mum contributes to the new business venture and moves into the property with them and their two girls.
It’s clear something happened when they lived in London but it’s not until later in the book that we find out what this was.
As Kirsty’s Mum has an interest in the property, when she arranges for her niece and her daughter to come and stay, Kirsty can’t say no.
We find out that Kirsty and Selena were very close as children but had a big falling out when they were eighteen, and this is the last time they saw each other.
Guests start to arrive and Kirsty has the feeling that all is not as it should be, and then a body is found.
The book starts with the discovery of the person and then works backwards building up to the incident itself.
This book really had me hooked and I raced few the second half.
It’s quite shocking in the end and makes you question what you would do in a similar situation.
Thanks to Penguin UK, Michael Joesph and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
This was an enjoyable, fast-paced thriller that, although a little far-fetched in places, kept me reading to find out what was going on!
Do Not Disturb is one of those books where you think you’ll just read a couple of chapters and before you know it your half way through the book.
Kirsty and her family need a fresh start. So along with her husband Adrian and daughters Amelia and Evie, they move from London to a small Welsh village where along with help from Kirsty’s mother, they’re renovating a house to open a B and B. The location and lifestyle sound idyllic to Kirsty until their first guest arrives. Her cousin Selena who she’s not seen for seventeen years. She’s trouble and Kirsty knows it.
This book will grip you from the start. It’s dark, chilling and thrilling and will have you guessing to the end. Fantastically written, I can highly recommend this.
Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin UK Michael Joseph and the author for the chance to review.
Following a turbulent 18 months, Kirsty and Adrian relocate to the Brecon Beacons with their two daughters (Amelia & Evie) to open a guest house with Kirsty's mother. This in itself presents some challenges due to the derelict nature of the building, differing opinions over renovations as well as living and working in close proximity to one another. To add to this, the new arrivals have not exactly been welcomed in to the village with open arms, in fact. many of their neighbours are openly hostile towards Kirsty & Adrian's family and new venture.
Kirsty's mother invites her estranged cousin to stay in the guesthouse with her frail daughter Ruby. At the same time, her Mother also invites Kirsty's adopted brother, Nathan and his wife Julia; they are struggling through IVF cycles unsuccessfully and arrive in Wales having experienced a turbulent few years in their marriage.
With these arrivals, the story unravels covering many different aspects of each character's life / troubles - domestic violence, murder, mental health issues, parenting, marital problems, fidelity etc.
I enjoyed this book, hence the 4* rating, but for me, it definitely is not a 5* read. I couldn't take to Kirsty - she seems like a lovely person to begin with, but she is a stifling mother who suffocates her children through her own anxiety. I found the level of anxiety suffered by Kirsty around her children to be overwhelming and entirely unnecessary - and this was before anything bad actually happened in the story! One issue I had was that if Kirsty had never believed Selena, why did she not try and keep in touch with her Uncle Owen?
The plot comes together in the last 25% of the book, and this was definitely my favourite section - it was fast paced and had some twists and turns. I did not predict the ending, but was reasonably satisfied with how the book played out.
I would recommend this book as a holiday read ... grab a sub lounger, your sun cream and a sundowner and enjoy it with a splash of sunshine!
I would like to thank NetGalley, Penguin UK, Micheal Joseph and the author Claire Douglas for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars. I had very high expectations of this novel after reading Last Seen Alive, which was one of my favorite reads last year. It’s always difficult to live up to that expection so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised that I was feeling it just wasn’t as twisty compared to last time. I remember feeling actually shocked by the revelations in Last Seen Alive but that shock-effect with everything being turned upside down didn’t really make it into this one for me since I was able to foresee at least some of it. Am I getting just too good at this thing, it could also be a possibility :-).
Kirsty’s family of four moved to Wales to get a new start and they’re starting a b&b with her mother. As if that’s not enough eggshells to walk on, her mother invites Selena to stay, the niece she has cut out of her life for 17 years because she’s such a liar. They are adults now though and when Kirsty sees her with her daughter Ruby, her heart softens and she has to wonder if it’s time to put the past in the past. Do Not Disturb brings this estranged family back together, adding also her brother and his wife into the mix, and it was great seeing all the underlying tensions and secrets they kept from one another. Finding out why Kirsty and Selena fell out of love and out of touch kept me very busy, it was all very mysterious and things remained unspoken for quite a while. The author then adds an extra dash of creepiness by letting a few strange things occur in the house which make you wonder what exactly is going on and where the threat is coming from.
Do Not Disturb was a compelling read that is more than just a thriller or murder mystery. It’s about life as a family and I really appreciated how all the secrets and the façade of their splendid lives was slowly peeled away to its core. I found many ugly truths and tragedy in the end. But as I said, I did anticipate some of it and my instincts also told me to read certain scenes with a good dose of suspicion and it proved I was right on at least one major issue. I also kind of felt how it was going to end and I would have liked to have seen another culprit really. There were plenty of secrets and lots to discover and it’s definitely a good thriller that kept me well entertained but it’s not the novel that I would recommend most if you haven’t read any of her novels yet. I do look forward to reading her next one though because I’ve already seen what she can pull off!
First book I've read by this author and hopefully not the last.
It delivered the right amount of mystery and intrigue to keep you guessing at every turn. Felt.similar to an Agatha Christie whodunit but there are worse comparisons to be likened with..
I enjoyed the book despite a jumpy beginning and the characters felt believable if somewhat unbelievably forced together for the duration.
I won't dwell too much on details as the synopsis what's the appetite enough to want to read more without the need to give away too much. A recommended purchase for any lover of crime, murder mystery and suspense fiction.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy in return for an honest review.
As I waved my neighbours off to their holiday in Wales this morning it struck me that if you paid attention to this years crime fiction you would never set foot in the place. Far too dangerous! First off there was Mark Edwards’ The Retreat (check out my review on that one too) and now hot on its heels is Do Not Disturb.
Kirsty is desperate for a new start with her family. Leaving London and all of its memories behind she is beginning a new life running a guest house in a small Welsh town. Going into business with her husband Adrian and her mother feels like the perfect choice. The old stone house is a little run down having been neglected for a while but Kirsty is up for the challenge.
When the first guests start to arrive Kirsty is irked by the interference of her mother and the sudden appearance of cousin Selena and her sickly daughter Rose. A rift in the family meant that Kirsty hadn’t seen Selena since they were eighteen.
The book opens to the screams of Kirsty’s mother as she finds a body at the bottom of the stairs. Setting the tone nicely with dark sinister notes the story then goes back to the family’s arrival in Wales. Douglas has woven together a cleverly complex story and I was convinced that three different people were the killer (all wrong I might add!).
Do Not Disturb is the perfect book to read on your sunbed this holiday. It will keep you gripped all the way to the quite surprising end. I suspect that it will be a favourite with book groups over the next year with more than a few discussion points to be found within its pages.
Supplied by Net Galley and Penguin in exchange for an honest review.
UK Publication date: Aug 1 2018. 400 pages.
This felt like a contemporary Agatha Christie with the suspects corralled in a bed and breakfast and the reader furiously page turning to find whodunit.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, independent review.
After Kirsty, Adrian and their children move to Wales to run a guesthouse, along with Kirsty's mother, they should be leading the idyllic family life. But strange goings-on start occurring, with the children scared, a physic guest warning them of danger...and a murder within the family.
I've never read any books by Claire Douglas before so I do not know her style of writing, but I loved this book! I struggled to put it down at night to go to sleep, wanting to read for "just another ten more minutes". I was kept guessing the whole way through the book, with the truth and lies hard to tell apart. I love that there were shocking moments throughout the book, meaning I was gripped the whole time, needing to read on.
I'd love to read more thrillers like this by Claire Douglas!
I really enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down. It starts with Kirsty and her family moving to the welsh countryside to open a guest house, something I’ve always dreamed of doing. But then her estranged cousin Selena turns up and the nightmare begins. At which point I was slightly put off opening a guest house of my own. The characters were brilliantly created and the setting was idyllic. The mystery was expertly set up and left me guessing until the very end. I definitely recommend this book
With thanks to Netgalley and Penguin for this ARC in exchange for an open and honest review.
Claire Douglas is one of my favourite to go to authors. I enjoyed her last two books Local Girl Missing and Last Seen Alive which I have gave fve stars.
I knew I was in for a treat from the prologue. Guest house owner Kirsty woke in the early hours of the morning to a scream downstairs. She stood at the top of her stairs to see her mother crouched over a body lying on the floor Her mother stared up at Kirsty her hands covered in blood....
Kirsty was married to Adrian and they had two daughters Evie and Amelia. Kirsty and Adrian decided to leave the rat race in London after he had a nervous breakdown. They bought a former guest house with the help of Kirsty's mother Julia.
Julia would sell her home and they would become business partners.
Kirsty was dismayed when she found out Julia has invited her cousin Selina to stay. Selina and Kirsty had been close until Selina told a terrible lie Disgusted Kirsty never spoke to her again for seventeen years.
Selina arrived with her daughter Ruby who she adored. Selina was a carer for Ruby who was wheelchair bound and had multiple health issues. Selina admitted she lied and she and Kirsty made friends. There were a couple of occasions when Kirsty found Selina and Adrian together and did not trust her.
The day the guesthouse opened to their first guests. did not go well. First some dead flowers with a threatening note were found at the front door. Then another guest mentioned the house had bad luck and a death had occurred in the attic.
The next day Julie mentioned she had invited Kirstys brother Nathan and wife Julia to stay for free. But Nathan could barely look at Selina and Julia disliked her. Then Evie found a China doll hidden under a floorboard, later if was found in the attic hanging from a noose. Then someone pushed Selena downstairs her death.
Claire Douglas artfully weaved multiple threads together to create a very dark web of lies and deceit within a family. Do Not Disturb was a twisty turny thriller with plenty of red herrings to keep you hooked.
As a side note I would of been interested in reading about what led Adrian to resign from his job as a lawyer and have a breakdown.
It was easy to guess who was behind the notes but one of the revelations about Selena was completely disturbing. I would never of guessed it in a million years. When Selena's killer was revealed, I felt a cold shiver down my spine.
I highly recommend Do Not Disturb and look forward to her next book.
Do Not Disturb is a great thriller, murder mystery that had me hooked all the way through, I enjoyed it very much and is a highly recommended read.
I found this a gentle read reminiscent of an Agatha Christie style murder mystery rather than a spine chilling thriller. It was an easy read but did not grab my undivided attention. It had the ingredients. Possible ghostly movements, a death, characters with shady backgrounds, mental health issues, many people with a motive for murder. Perhaps there were too many side issues. A family moves to start a new life running a guest house in the Brecon Beacons. Guests arrive but so do family members. There is animosity to the family from within the village as well as the issues and problems within the family that could give rise to their being suspects . Was the victim murdered or was it an unfortunate accident. Will the truth come out or be covered up. True justice or rough justice?
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an Arc copy of this book
Very enjoyable family drama. Kirsty, along with her mum, husband and 2 young daughters, has moved back to Wales to open a guest house. She soon discovers that running a guest house isn't as easy as it appears and she begins to wonder if she has done the right thing. Her husband has recently recovered from a breakdown and is focusing on his own health and working alongside her critical mother is pretty stressful. We find out a body has been found at the bottom of the stairs in the early hours of the morning, and the story slowly unravels what events have led to the mysterious death of one of the characters.
Plenty of twists and turns throughout the book, some of which I saw coming but others were real surprises! The ending leaves the reader feeling quite unsettled as I think it is meant to, it would be interesting to revisit the family in a decade or so and catch up on how they are getting on.
Very enjoyable read.
Kirsty and her family have relocated to Wales to run a guesthouse following a recent family incident. The guesthouse having been left abandoned for a long time is a source of creepiness for Kirsty’s young children and the neighbours do not take too kindly to the “outsiders” moving into their town. Told from Kirsty’s point of view, Do Not Disturb takes on Kirsty’s anxiety throughout and whilst you read, there is a certain urgency as you race through to discover what on earth is happening. An enjoyable read, though not quite a thriller.
