Kirsty, Aiden and their daughters move to the Brecon Beacons to start afresh setting up a B&B, after their former London lives took a very unexpected turn. The house they buy and renovate however has some hidden secrets, as indeed their family has, and things start to unravel. I found this a great read, keeping me guessing until the end. Often the endings in books are a disappointment, with all the ends neatly tied up, but not this one, which I loved. I would highly recommend and will look forward to other novels from this author.
This was an enjoyable if slightly spooky read about a family who relocate to Wales to open a guesthouse after the husband suffers a breakdown. Almost as soon as they are ready to open, things start going wrong. Some of these are almost self inflicted, a difficult long lost cousin coming to stay for example. I'm not clear why Kirsty and her mother didn't tell her to get lost. Others though have an almost supernatural element to them including a creepy doll. Why is it that dolls can be so frightening? I was not convinced by the resolution however and felt it was a bit melodramatic and spoiled an otherwise engrossing read. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC.
Fabulous, gripping story couldn’t put it down was I started!! Excited for more titles from this author
A fantastic read. Thoroughly enjoyed this and it is not something I would usually pick up. Will look for more from this author in future.
Following Adrian's breakdown, Kirsty and Adrian and their two children move to the Brecon Beacons in Wales to renovate an old house and turn it into a B&B. Soon after opening, they have some paying guests, along with pretty much all of Kirsty's family staying in the B&B. Kirsty's mum, her brother and his wife, her cousin Selena (with whom she has been estranged for many years following a row when they were 18), and Selena's sickly daughter, Ruby.
The house itself has a dark past and it is not the only one. Each of Kirsty's family appear to have secrets of their own. The villagers also are pretty hostile to the new residents. When one of the residents of the B&B is found dead at the bottom of the stairs, layers and layers of secrets are unveiled piece by piece, exposing everyone as a potential suspect. The fact that there is potential supernatural activity in the house only adds to the mounting tension as the police move in. I can't say too much without giving away much of the plot but suffice to say, it is very cleverly written as to have you reading "just one more chapter"!
This is a gripping and easy read that has you guessing all the way. I read this book in 24 hours and absolutely could not put it down. There are twists and turns galore throughout the book, culminating in a shock and totally unexpected ending. It has now left me with the question...how far would you go to protect your family?? A 5* riveting whodunit. I loved it.
This is an easy read. It keeps you guessing and makes you question decisions you may or may not make yourself..
Adrian and Kirsty move to wales with their family to open up a B and B, sounds beautiful moving away from the huddle and bussel but that is not how it turns out. Family come and stay bringing with them unresolved issues from the past. This book flows beautiful and is easy to read. You soon get a picture of the key characters and the reader is led through this intricate plot involving family and an old house and a village that really don’t want new arrivals
This book had me gripped from the start . I haven't read any other material from this author so have no comparisons with her other books but I will definitely be given them a read. This book is full of twists and turns it will have you in a spin. There is an incident in the story thats like a who's done it. The fact the story is based in a guest House and there are many people to chose from, adds to the thrill. We meet a family trying to make a fresh start whilst trying to put behind them a near tragedy. There are secrets and lies to deal with, virtually each page you turn, who is hiding what from who?? Brilliantly written. A must read.
This is a book that has it all a mystery , a murder and family with many problems. The main character is Kirstie, her husband , her children, her mother and other members of her family. They move from London to a small village in Wales restoring a large house into a bed and breakfast. When they open is when the problems begin.
This book is well worth a read and after a few chapters you are hooked. Great read
Thank you NetGalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.
I finished this book a few days ago but I didn't write the review right away as I needed time to digest what I had read and consolidate my feelings about it. I finished the book very quickly and I did enjoy the read, it was fast-paced and engaging. I don't feel it had the suspense I normally like in a psychological thriller but it did keep me engaged enough to finish it in just a few days. For me personally it's not one of Claire Douglas' best books.
The book is about Kirsty, her husband and two daughters. They left city life after the stress led her husband to attempt suicide so they bought a Guesthouse in Wales with Kirsty's mother. After opening they have several members of the family come to stay along with guests however things start to take a sinister turn. They find dead flowers are left at the door, the locals are unfriendly and finally they find a dead body. The story follows a who done it format as you try and unravel the events leading to the death.
****spoilers***
The way that Ruby's *illness was dealt with was great and really opens your mind to this form of child abuse.
I disliked the family setup they seemed to keep a lot of secrets from each other. We find out at the end that the death was an accident, however Kirtsy decided to let a man go down for murder and burden her eldest daughter with keeping a huge secret, that her little sister was the killer. I felt this was very strange as I am not sure the police would think a sleepwalking 7-year-old with no memory of an incident would be locked up for murder and I have struggled with getting my head around Kirsty's actions especially as a mother of girls similar in age to hers.
I’ve always enjoyed books by Claire Douglas and this one didn’t not disappointed.
The story was dense with layers but they all added to the plot, giving you lots to think about.
I was hooked from the start and could not put it down, I just needed to know who was behind it all and as always it was never who I thought. The layers from the story added to the suspense and kept the story at its pace and I could turn the pages fast enough.
The description of the house made me feel chilly, scared and like I was being watched from the pages.
The characters were familiar to me and felt like I knew them in real life or at least associate them with people in my life.
I throughly enjoyed this book and I’m slightly sad I finished it so fast.
Happily recommend it to friends and thank you to NetGalley for giving my the opportunity of reading this book for a honest review.
I enjoyed this book but there were too many elements to it for me to have found it totally satisfying.
After an issue with her husband's health in London, Kirsty moves back to Wales with her family to run a B+B in a spooky old house. When her estranged cousin Serena and ill daughter come to stay, long held secrets are revealed. But when a dead body is found, Kirsty realises that the murderer maybe closer to home than anyone suspected.
I enjoyed the pacing of this novel - the time before the murder and the time after. The flashbacks were well spaced and the introduction of significant characters from the past - Dean, Nathan etc was well done. However there were too many elements - the spooky house, the paranormal activities, the mystery in Kirsty's husband's past, the issues between her brother and his wife, her aunt and her uncle, the potential for child abuse - it was all a bit too much and a bit too far fetched.
I did guess the ending fairly early on (I usually do) and I felt it was a good twist but then the very end - the epilogue, didn't sit quite right with me and should have been seeded in earlier.
Overall a good enjoyable read, but perhaps a little bit too much going on which overshadowed the main plot.
Thank you to netgalley and Michael Joseph for this e-ARC
WOW
This book had me hooked from beginning to end.
And what a twist!
This is a tale with plenty of mystery and hints of thrills, as the reader I never quite knew what direction the story would go.
Cleverly pieced together with details from both past and present.
The real questions, who's lying and why?
Highly recommended!
This is the third book that I have read by Claire Douglas, having reaed Local Girl Missing and Last Seem Alive. I am becoming more familiar with the twists and turns that the author puts into her book, not expecting anything and always looking for the surprise.
This book was full of those, as usual, I didn't see a lot coming, but despite that I felt that fundamentally the book didn't go anywhere. It didn't take me on the sort of journey that I often look for in a book, where I become invested in the characters.
The book focuses on Kirsty, whose family have uprooted their lives to take on a Guesthouse in the Brecon Beacons. On the first weekend of opening Kirsty's entire family descends onto the Guesthouse, including her estranged cousin, Selenda, and her brother Nathan. Perhaps because I didn't really like any of the characters it's made me a little jaded.
The scenery really helps add to the air of mystery that's created within the book, and it is really well described. I think it sounds like I wasn't sure about the book, whcih I was, I really enjoyed it, just with so many good thrillers out there at the moment I feel that I want more from a book.
Thank you to netgalley.co.uk for providing me with a free copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I thought this book really good but I thought it fell just a bit short of expectations, I was expecting a good thriller with a gothic aspect concerning the guesthouse in the Welsh countryside, I loved the description of this but to be honest I quickly lost interest afterwards and I'm not sure why, I didn't feel as invested in the character's lives as I would have liked. I don't think it was anything to do with the writing but I didn't seem to click with the book.
A book to please everyone. There was a whodunnit aspect, mental health issues, a possible supernatural element and family dramas and secrets. I loved the premise of starting up a guest house in rural Wales and the impact that had on the various characters. A great read.
Don't think that you'll read this a bit at a time because when you start, you'll not want to stop. It is gripping to say the least. The story line is unusual but exceedingly cleverly put together. There are several strands all interwoven to make it unlikely you will guess who caused the death of the damaged mother. The setting is clever too with the use of a bed and breakfast house giving the excuse for other possible perpetrators to be living in! Every character carries baggage, making it all the more intriguing.
A page-turning slow burn. Momentum builds gradually to a spectacular finish. It's unbelievable what some parents will do to their children.
After a rough year Kirsty, Adrian and their two children Evie and Amelia move to the countryside to set up a B&B, but when their first guests are closer to home than expected, who can they really trust?
The narrative of Do Not Disturb is compelling and kept me interested throughout. It’s a nice mix of flashback background on characters and events, action packed present day events and foreboding premonitions. There are even parts of it that feel almost in the horror genre, but without it going too over the top. The portrait of family life was interesting, with enough information withheld and drip fed to the reader in a way that was not frustrating or felt fake. I also really liked the characterisation of the two girls – it felt very realistic in a way that is not often done well in fiction.
The story itself is full of twists and turns – leaving you guessing right up until the last chapter, each red herring felt entirely plausible and not over the top to make you sure that this time it was sure to be the right answer. Although I guessed a couple of smaller plot details ahead of time, I didn’t find the main plot predictable at all – far from it!
As a few other reviewers have been left disappointed that this book is not as good as Claire Douglas’ other work I will definitely have to look up more books by this author! A twisty read that keeps you guessing right up until the very end. Thank you to NetGalley & Penguin UK – Michael Joseph for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A great holiday read... possibly more aimed at a female audience (I'm a middle aged man) but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
A family move to Wales from London to set up a B&B business, leaving behind some recent family troubles, but different family issues surface and the dramatic change of life isn't necessarily the change/ new start they'd been hoping for...
A good psychological thriller, it definitely makes you think, pause and reflect. The multi characters are all very believable and I look forward to seeing what this author produces next. The style was - to me - like another (not very well known) author I highly rate - Patrick Redmond. And the book was very satisfying in that it tied up all the lose ends. One to recommend.
