Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Kirsty has relocated with her family to Wales to open a B &B with the financial support and practical of her mother.
She soon finds out that the lovely old house that they have bought as a "fixer upper" has a dark history and some local residents are not happy with their arrival. The story of the old house and its tragic secrets adds a really creepy edge to the book throughout.
When Kirsty's estranged cousin, Selena turns up though the problems are set to get much worse for the family than a few creepy stories.
I always enjoy books by this author and I think that this is the best novel that she has written to date.. There are so many twists and red herrings that I had absolutely no idea how it was going to end (an excellent ending by the way!). I read this book in 24 hours and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a psychological thriller.
Not too sure about this one. I finished it a couple of days ago and waited for it to ‘settle’ in my mind. Did I enjoy it? Yes, but…
Kirsty, her husband and two daughters have bought a house in Wales with the intention of running a B&B: this is part financed and part run with Kirsty’s mother. Hmm! After much restoration, lots of work, money and anxiety it is now time to open. Along with a few guests, members of Kirsty’s family descend on her (are they paying guests – just one more worry). Things as they are wont go wrong. Dead flowers delivered to their door; unfriendly locals; problems with their daughters; and then a dead body.
A sort of Agatha Christie mystery with the usual secrets and lies that make a good whodunit. Just didn’t make it as a brilliant thriller (for me). I enjoyed reading it but felt it was all a bit predictable, even the ending.
What you do have here though, is a good read, not challenging but holding its own on the enjoyment scale without taxing plots and characters.
Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. It didn’t take as long to read as I couldn’t put it down. This storyline was brilliant. The build up to selina’s demise was good. I think she deserved it to be honest. Although I was surprised as to who done it as I honestly thought it was Adrian. The twists and turns in this book had me wanting more. Brilliant 5star read.
I have read all of Claire Douglas' books and always enjoyed them. For me, this one started a little slow and while I was quite enjoying (she is a wonderful writer), I was struggling to get hooked on the story. However, it is so worth sticking with. It eventually becomes an exciting murder mystery. It's in the perfect setting; a guesthouse, meaning there are plenty of suspects and people to consider.
There are twists right up until the end, and characters with complex lives and an ever present threat - everything a good mystery needs. Recommend.
Hard to review. I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. I feel like the concept needed more space to really get into it. The characters were interesting, Selena and her lies were very intriguing but some characters like Dean barely got enough screen time to add intrigue.
I love haunted houses and this kind of "mysterious dinner party" set up where characters from the protagonists past seem to appear to haunt them and bring up all the old mysteries, but this one never quite hit the mark for me.
When this story first started to get going I thought it was about a haunted house which isn’t the kind of genre I like to read but I carried on and the book does end up being more of a traditional thriller.
Personally I prefer her other books but this is worth a read!
2 stars.
This book has real promise, some of the characters, plot points and twists were really interesting but overall it felt a bit flat and messy.
That said I’ve previously really enjoyed books by Claire Douglas and will continue to seek them out.
Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Interesting read set in Wales. I found the interaction between the characters quite thought provoking at times and even though they came across as slightly unbelievable at times, they were still very good. It’s a quick read and perfect for the holidays.
A very enjoyable, clever book. You really have no idea of the murderer/ess until the last few pages. The book is like a large onion as each layer reveals either understanding or maybe a red-herring. This is definitely a page turner and you really do have difficulty putting the book down and get on with something else. I did not give thew book five stars because I was looking for a final 'wow' in the very last pages although the perpetrator is a surprise.
Parts of this book were well worth four stars, but it had its problem areas. Near the beginning seemed a bit slow moving, and I thought it was just another escape to the country type book. Ruby's condition was also easy to guess.
After the crime things moved much faster and it carried the reader along. The ending, however, wasn't convincing and felt as if a follow up book was intended.
The tale of a London family escaping to the country. The main characters are Kirsty and Selena. Having found a property in Wales to restore to a guest house the world and his wife descend. Selena's arrival is the start of several unsettling events. A proper thriller with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing right until the end. I really enjoyed this book and read it in two days. It's a 10/10 read and had moments of giving me palpitations. I recommend Do Not Disturb.
This was a complex story. Lots of secrets, moral dilemmas, threats and violence. There was always an undercurrent of distrust. A totally absorbing story and a conclusion which leaves lots of questions. One of those books you can't put down because you need to know what happens.
After all the upset they had back in London, Kirsty and her husband Adrian decide to move away with their children and open up a guest house in Wales. It needs a lot of work doing to it but soon they are ready to open. Kirsty is shocked when their first guest is Selena. They've not seen each other for years after Kirsty walked away because of the things Selena did. She's now married with a daughter of her own, but why has she suddenly turned up? Is there more to it than she's telling them and more to the point, has she changed?
I have to say this is a first rate book that certainly keeps you guessing right up until the end. Not only are some past secrets revealed but more secrets are made, hopefully never to be discovered. The ending came as more than a surprise, something I didn't see coming at all. There's never a dull moment in this thriller and I absolutely loved it. I have no hesitation in recommending it and I give it a full five stars. My grateful thanks to Michael Joseph Comms for my copy via NetGalley.
A gripping story with largely sympathetic and believable characters. It kep me guessing until the end and was definitely a good read. I think I expected a slightly stronger ending, which is why I have only given four stars. Good coverage of mental health issues and family dynamics, with all the complexity of emotions that family entails. Well worth reading.
I think every member of this family has a secret (or two) and all the characters seem to favour lies over the truth. The opening chapter definitely caught my attention and I enjoyed part one which detailed the events in the previous two months. I wasn’t quite as gripped by part two and found myself getting annoyed at the police and how poor their investigation seemed to be. There is a particular decision made by the main character Kirsty that I strongly disagree with and I’m sure it will be a topic of much debate in book groups.
Do Not Disturb is an enjoyable and compelling thriller, somewhat predictable but still a gripping pacy read, set in the atmospheric Welsh mountains. A recommended read.
I have just finished this book and loved it. After her husband walked out on his job and tried to hang himself when the chance for her dream life of running a hotel in Wales where she grew up as a child she bought an old house along with some financial help from her mum.
Her past soon comes back to haunt her when her cousin Selena turns up with her sick young child. Things start to go from bad to worse with dead flowers being left and warnings and then Selena is found dead in her hotel. There are so many surprises with this book it will keep you wanting to read more, I know I couldn't put it down. I will look forward to reading more this author.
I liked the description of this book and I did actually read it all but there was so much in it that irritated me and distracted from the murder/mystery/suspense, whatever genre it was meant to be. (It was not scary or suspenseful at all.) These are the things I could not overlook:
None of the characters were pleasant. All the men were suspected of wicked deeds, murder, child abuse, marital violence. The women were not much better - the two mothers, one an alcoholic, the other a control freak; Selena - liar, fantasist, murderer, child abuser; Kirsty, supposedly the innocent party, all too willing to hide evidence from the police and let an innocent man go to jail for murder. The villagers were sinister and unwelcoming, spreading rumours of the cursed house and making dire predictions. No wonder the B&B guests were scared off! The author tries to build up suspense using hauntings, dead flowers, spooky dolls, mysterious strangers, a rope noose and missing objects, which were all irrelevant and explained away lamely. I even expected something to happen to the rabbits, she mentions them so often. Kirsty loses or uses her inhaler in almost every chapter. She has favourite words and phrases which she over-uses - she scoops up children/coffee/hair; many things are weird, including a weird salute which Dean gives (?). She gets things wrong: Kirsty's daily inhaler would not have steroids, Ruth throws away her crutches and starts to eat everything and runs around days after her mother's death. Lastly, the chicken - Kirsty decides to defrost a chicken for dinner and is putting it in the oven a couple of hours later! No one dies of salmonella....unfortunately.
Kirsty and Adrian move back to Kirsty's home land of Wales from London much to their eldest daughters Amelias frustration but the younger girl Evie just sees it as a new adventure. They have brought a old rectory that became a guest house but needed a lot of renovation work so Kirstys Mum comes in on the project. Adrian was a lawyer but quit his job and had a breakdown so life has been interesting for the family and a new start in the countryside as opposed to Cardiff where Kirsty lived with her Mum as a child seems like a great idea. Unfortunately on their opening weekend the Mum invited a number of relatives to join with the first guests and things unfold into a whole load of trouble, torment and that's why this becomes such a great read. There are twist and turns and just as you think you know what's next you will be wrong if you're like me anyway. It is such a good read and i can't find any reason not to recommend it and am grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for this copy. It is a thriller with so many possibilities that to try and guess or know where to turn is just a wild dab in the dark which is a ironic statement for this kind of book I guess. Claire Douglas it's a great author and whether this is the first of her books or you are the next in your list of her books you will be enthralled and hooked and in love with her writing on more so. I have read a few and have loved everyone of them from page one. right to the end, that's my take on Claires work anyhow and i hope you love it even more. I will look forward to your review because you won't want to miss it i promise from were I sit.
I had to read this in one go, I was dead tired, it was 1:15 in the morning but I had to get to the end!
Claire Douglas is one of few thriller writers who can combine a shocking story full of twists with sensitive explorations of family dynamics and controversial subjects.
. I loved it and can’t wait to start The Sisters.
