Kirsty, Adrian and their daughters go to Wales to start a fresh after what happened in London. Opening a bed and breakfast with their first guests arriving along comes Selena. Selena is Kirsty's cousin who she hasn't seen for a long time, and Selena has always been trouble.
This is the second book by Claire Douglas that I have read. I enjoyed the story of this novel like I did with the previous one I read, Local Girl Missing. Just like the prevoius book I didn't enjoy the ending.
With thrillers which are one of my favourite genre I do like to go in blind. This one had a beginning that caught my attention straight away. I didn't get bored with the story, it didn't become flat or boring. I just struggled with the ending. I didn't get the shock factor which I think was intended. To say anymore really would give the whole thing away.
What I enjoyed was the setting and that all that went on all happened in the home. The story had that claustrophobic feel with all the family and guests in one place. The story unravels elimatinating character's, very much like an Agatha Christie.
I won't dismiss another book by this author but both books up to yet have not blew me away, but I've liked them.
My review is posted on Librarything, Amazon and Instagram.
A suspenseful family drama which keeps you turning the pages. Kirsty and her young family are looking for a new start running a guesthouse in the Welsh mountains - then her cousin Selena, who she hasn't spoken to for 17 years, turns up, drama in tow. Can Selena ever be trusted? Does someone else mean her family harm?
For me this was yet another book where no one sits down and has a proper conversation. We are deep in Kirsty's head here, where worry and paranoia loom large but she's always just a little too busy to ask her husband how he's really getting on with that book he's writing, or too busy to ask her brother what's really going on, or even TOO BUSY to ask her young daughter what's inside the notebook that's marked (paraphrasing, but barely) 'I HAVE A SECRET'.
It kept me turning the pages and I enjoyed the tension in some of the family dynamics. The story wasn't as predictable as I feared. But it was a little slow to get going. A dead body in the first few pages doesn't actually turn up until 60% of the way in. Some things you think might be important just drift away. It's an okay book - I did enjoy it, and I also stayed up to finish it - but not one I'd recommend as 'oh my god you have to read this'.
Kirsty and her family leave London to open a guesthouse in Wales. A chance to forget what happened and move on. Then her cousin Selena arrives. They've not spoken in years due to her lies but maybe things have changed now her cousin has a child. Then there's a death and suddenly the truth becomes harder to see.
This was a very good read and the ending really gets you thinking about what you would do in that situation. The plot is interesting. It start with a death then jumps back to before and follows the timeline through which was so interesting. I really enjoyed the plot and the twists that develop in the story. The ending was so interesting and thought provoking. I'm not sure what I would have done and definitely hadn't figured out the killer until revealed.
Kirsty is a great character and her strength is amazing given all she's gone through. The others all compliment the story well and I really liked Ruby as well.
Sooooo I did enjoy this but found it dragged in parts, I’ve read al her previous books and didn’t feel the same way with those? Maybe it’s just me!!
The premise is the book is good, couple move from London and start a B&B, an old friend (well sort of friend) arrives and things go rapidly wrong! Lots of secrets going on and quite a few twists and turns to keep you busy. I didn’t really seem to gel with any of the characters and I don’t think that helped.
Not a bad read and I did enjoy it, just not her best I didn’t think, my friend read it and loved it and so maybe it’s me!!!
When Kirsty moves her family to a remote location in the Welsh mountains she believes that it will help them all. The family have been through a traumatic time of late, and running a guesthouse together is just the project to bring Kirsty and her husband together.
The only potential cloud on their bright new horizon is Kirsty’s Mother. She is investigating in the project heavily, and the family need her financial help, but perhaps not her slightly overbearing motherly guidance.
Particularly not when she mentions that she has secured them a guest, an old family friend, one Kirsty thought she’d never see again after a falling out as teenagers. One that she doesn’t particularly wish to see again...
Kirsty’s Mother has no idea of the secrets and tensions between Kirsty and Selena, and doesn’t understand why they can’t just get on which each other. But Selena is and always has been troublesome. Kirsty doesn’t want her in her home, potentially jeopardising her business before it’s even got off the ground.
Do Not Disturb is a wholly believable tale of complicated family relationships, betrayal, depression and many things in between. It is a twisty, turny delight of a novel and I look forward to the authors next.
This is my second Claire Douglas book and was as fantastic as the first.
Adrian and Kirsty have moved to the Brecon Beacons with their daughters Amelia (11) and Evie (6). Kirsty’s Mum, Carol, has helped them financially to buy a dilapidated old vicarage which they are doing up to run as a Bed and Breakfast. They have moved to Wales for a quieter lifestyle after Adrian got very stressed with his job in London which caused severe mental health issues for him. Adrian is now mostly writing a book while Kirsty and Carol are on the verge of opening the Bed and Breakfast.. Just before they officially open Kirsty is wishing that her mother was not in the partnership as Carol has invited her niece Selena with her young disabled daughter, Ruby, to stay. Kirsty got on well with her cousin Selena as children but they had a big bust up when they were about 18 and haven’t spoken since. Kirsty then discovered that her mother has invited her adopted brother, Nathan and his wife Julia, to stay without checking first with Kirsty and Adrian.
Things unravel quickly after Selena’s arrival and the book has many twists and turns. I did guess about Ruby’s illness early on but maybe as I have come across this in real life so saw the signs. The twists and turns were great. I didn’t guess the ending and certainly enjoyed the journey – woe betide anyone who disturbed me when reading it. The title of ‘Do Not Disturb’ being very apt.
This was just as good as ‘Last Seen Alive’ by the same author and I will be looking out for more of her books.
With thanks to NetGalley and Penguin UK - Michael Joseph for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading this psychological thriller. The characters were well developed and the Welsh location was believable. I recommend this .
Kirsty had enough of London and moved to Brecon Beacons to fill her dream house of guest homes
Selena turns up with a suitcase and another relative comes round .
I had an arc
A chilling thriller about a family trying to start afresh after Adrian the husband/dad gets over a breakdown. On opening a bed and breakfast Kirsty is surprised when her family start turning up to stay unbeknown to her her Mum had invited them all. Lots of things start happening topped off with Kirsty’s cousin Selena falling down the stairs and dying. While trying to find out if it was an accident or not Kirsty starts to uncover lots of family secrets. A good read which I recommend.
I’m sorry but I gave up at 60% as I neither cared nor was interested in the characters and the plot. I found both to be superficial and irritating. Too much banality and transparent engineering. Not one for me but I won’t be posting on Amazon etc as I’m sure the author and the book will appeal to others.
This novel had more red herrings that any Agatha Christie novel. An amazing read leaving the reader chopping and changing as to who the murderer was.. Following Kirsty’s husband mental breakdown they decide to buy a rundown guest house in a small village bordering the Brecon Beacon mountain range in Wales.. This is a read that involves an extended family all with many secrets and covers mental health issues in more than one guise, bereavement, tragedy and family loss. Kirsty and he family discover that the Welsh small village syndrome is not an easy place to be welcomed into. A real tangled web of a story. That is certainly a compulsive read.
Mixed feelings about this book! As with Local Girl Missing it was definitely a page turner with plenty of twists and turns but I felt the goal posts kept moving. Kirsty and her mother, Carol, have a difficult relationship which left me wondering why they could possibly hope to run a business together. None of the relationships seem particularly healthy because everyone seems to lie to each other. Whether the dead body, Selena, at the beginning of the story is the result of an accident or murder is repeatedly confused by the number of possible suspects. There doesn't seem to be any full honesty between any of the characters.
Then we have the age old dilemma - What would you do to defend and or protect your children. I would do anything to protect my family from harm but I don't know it would be right to cover up their illegal activities or let others take the blame!!
Having said all that it was extremely readable.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Claire Douglas/Penguin UK -Michael Joseph for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
The opening scenes in the book are of a body lying at the foot of the stairs and someone with blood on their hands.
We then move to two months before this incident and Kirsty, her husband, two daughters and her mother have moved from London to Wales to open a B&B which is Kirsty's dream. They are also trying to forget a traumatic event that happened in London.
One of the first guests turns out to be Kirsty's estranged cousin Selena, a person Kirsty has not seen for 17 yrs and the last person she wants to welcome. This has been orchestrated by Kirsty's mother who has obviously kept in touch with Selena.
Strange things happen in the house and the neighbours don't seem too friendly. One guest even warns Kirsty that the house isn't a safe place to be.
Everyone seems to have secrets and as another unwelcome guest appears will Kirsty wonders if she has done the right thing by leaving London?
I expected this book to be a bit ghostly and a bit of suspense and a bit of crime. It didn't quite live up to keeping me awake at night or having me on the edge of my seat. I guessed part of the story quite quickly but did get a few surprises along the way.
After saying all that I did enjoy the read. I liked the character of Kirsty. She was a strong woman fighting for her family even putting up with going into business with her mother to enable this to happen.
I didn't like her husband Adrian. I know he had problems but I felt like he wasn't trying and this is what made me dislike him.
Selena was.... Well, I can't even describe her you'll have to read the book to find out what she was...I wonder if like me you will guess.
Claire Douglas has written another fantastic book which is really thrilling, deliciously creepy and utterly brilliant.
From the start I was drawn into the story with a fantastic opening chapter. The general atmosphere in the book makes you think anything could happen at any time which kept me on my toes. The pace is quite fast from the beginning and got faster throughout the book as the story progressed.
As I might have mentioned I love the idea of starting anew somewhere and running a B&B really appeals to me so I felt for Kirsty when her dreams started to go wrong. The fact she tries hard to hold everything together and keep everyone happy made me warm to her as did her obvious love for her kids. I found myself hoping for a good ending for her even though I had a feeling early on that this wouldn’t happen.
The book goes back and forth between time periods, gradually building up a picture of the characters and their history. There were lots of twists and turns which definetly kept me on my toes as some were very unexpected.
This is the fifth book by this author and the fifth I’ve read. I’m so excited that her stories keep getting better and better.
Huge thanks to Katie from Michael St Joseph for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour. If you like fast paced, creepy thrillers you’ll love this book.
This is the first Claire Douglas book I've read but it won't be the last!!!
Kirsty and her family have moved from London to Wales (as they are trying to get over a traumatic period in their lives), where there buy an old property they renovate and open as a Bed & Breakfast.
Kirsty’s Mum joins them and is later followed by her cousin and her daughter and then her brother and his wife who all come for a visit.
They also have a few other paying guests who have booked rooms as well as the cleaner they hired to help out.
The book begins with a chilling start where Kirsty hears a noise in the middle of the night, goes to investigate and finds her mother at the bottom of the stairs next to a body.
The story then goes back to months before the incident, weeks before it and finally days before it, before it relates to the time period after the incident.
I don’t want to say to much more for fear of giving anything away but I found myself doubting all of the characters at some point and thought I'd figured out who it was but I was wrong... the ending I did not expect.
I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of Claire Douglas' novels and I thought this was quite different. A few of the usual frustrations - why aren't people asking questions or saying what they mean? But this held together well and was a good thriller with an ending I didn't guess! Really enjoyed it.
Thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for an advance electronic copy in return for an honest review.
The trick with is book is it is part thriller, crime and a touch of the supernatural all melded into a highly readable book. You certainly empathise with the main character Kirsty who is helping her husband recover from a breakdown and raising a young family.
The book opens on the day of her seeing her monther with blood on her hands… The plot then goes back in time before this day and you get various characters coming into play. Although a crime has been committed it is not a police procedural, more an edge of your seat psychological thriller.
Although when reading the book you do wonder how one family could have so many skeletons in the closet, it is all believable. Claire Douglas should certainly be on your reading list.
Really enjoyed this book. Not the first I have read of her's and won't be the last. Kept me on the edge
Hmmm I don't really know what to say about this book it wasn't a 'bad' book but there again neither was it an excellent book. I really struggled to read it as I was not enjoying it at all. It just had too much going on, so most of the sub plots were skimmed over as there were just too many of them. I found the ending quite unsatisfactory and not believable either. I wasn't keen on the characters which never helps when reading a book! I hate being negative and I am sure fans of the author will thoroughly enjoy the book. Simply put this wasn't for me.
Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Michael Joseph and Claire Douglas for this ARC.
I really enjoyed Do Not Disturb! A great cast of characters, each with their own secrets, kept me guessing right till the very end!
