Attractive packaging for fun penguin facts. Animal series are always an easy sell, but the kids at my library really love this series!
10 Reasons to Love... a Penguin is a children's book written by Catherine Barr and illustrated by Hanako Clulow. Penguins are cute and special birds! Did you know that they go on incredible journeys? Or that they toboggan on their stomachs? Discover ten reasons why penguins are amazing and five ways you can show they love them in this gorgeous picture book. A must for any young animal enthusiast and a fantastic introduction to environmental issues.
10 Reasons to Love... a Penguin is a delightful non fiction picturebook about penguins that explains why we should all the the 18 different types of penguins. The illustrations are very realistic, and labeled to note the type of penguin pictured and the other animals included. The facts are interesting and well worded so that the information is understandable to a wide range of reading and age levels, but without boring older or more advanced readers. I like that there were a few little tips for readers to implement that can help penguins, and other wildlife, survive and thrive. I thought I knew a good deal about penguins, but I learned some things from the read- like that they have a special gland that allows them to sneeze the salt water that they ingest while eating. The only thing that I found lacking in my digital galley was a list of resources or further reading in the endpages. The book encourages readers to research and check in on several things, which is great, but giving the links or at least pointing in the right direction for further reading would have been valuable to readers. Maybe it will be included in the final hardcover version, but it was not part of the digital galley which is what I have access to, and that disappointed me greatly.
10 Reasons to Love... a Penguin is a book with a lot going for it, particularly the great information and illustrations. However, I was disappointed in the lack of additional resources and information in the endpages to be very disappointing, and that lack cost the book a star in my rating system.
Catherine Barr’s Ten Reasons to Love a... Penguin! is a beautiful book to teach kids all about penguins as endangered species. I had no idea there were so many species of them. Eighteen known! It gives 10 special facts about penguins, from the fact that they toboggan to move faster on land to the fact that the dad us the one who nurses the eggs. Each page has gorgeous artwork, with animals and land features being labelled to enhance the learning. Encourages kids to adopt a penguin for a birthday or perhaps Christmas. I think this a great idea! There's a link suggestion for a site that has live feed of penguins. Pretty cool! I read this with my cubs, and we all enjoyed it. They are also interested in adopting an endangered species. Not sure if one will be a penguin, but I'm thrilled they are interested in adopting. I look forward to helping them pick out their critters. And to learning why they chose as they did. A great addition to any home or classroom library!
***Many thanks to Netgalley and Francis Lincoln Children's Books for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Most of these facts will be familiar to penguin enthusiasts already but a few may be new. A cute introduction to a fascinating bird.
We could think of more reasons as we love penguins here so this was an easy book for us to enjoy - it's quite simple but carries a much more powerful message so is a great way to introduce ideas of environmental change and animal welfare to young children.
A short and easy to understand primer on penguins. The illustrations are lovely but I wish they had used real pictures. I do like the “Show you love a penguin” coins on the various pages that tell you where to look up more information.
I love penguins, at least reading about or watching them on TV (They are the world’s worst smelling animal, though; seriously, don’t even get close), so I was looking forward to this, especially as I’d read the previous entry on lions. But some of these ten reasons are. . . unremarkable.
I was unaware there were so many types; the funniest names have to the macaroni, rockhopper, and chinstraps. And I hope there’s actually a reason for having both emperor and king penguins.
Penguins are strange yet cute enough animals to appeal to kids, so this one seems like a no-brainer.
This series is wonderful for children or those that want a brief overview of a specific animal. The book lists 10 things about penguins, some you might be aware of, some you might not. I knew about the tobogganing, and father's hatching eggs but I did not know about salty sneezes, the march for their babies, and that they gather in colonies so big their poo-stained ice can be seen from space. As in the other books in this series, each page features a beautiful drawing, filled with color and, of course, penguins, as well as text and labels on other animals, as well as plants. This book would be a hit in family, class, school and public libraries. Just the thing to peak an interest in animals and our world. I highly recommend this book and series. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions are my own.
This was a great little book to introduce penguins and simple non-fiction texts to children. With lifelike drawings and simply labelled the 10 facts gave a brilliant introduction to these unusual birds. It also gave opportunities for further research with the ‘show you love a penguin’ spots which pointed to websites and things you can do to help penguins. This would be perfect for our hot and cold topic in school and I’ll definitely look out similar books
10 Reasons to Love... a Penguin is the second book I've read in this nonfiction animal series by Catherine Barr. Once again, I was thrilled to learn some new penguin facts! The illustrations are lovely, and I also like Barr's voice as an author. The length is just just right for preschool and early elementary learners, too. Thanks to #NetGalley for the opportunity to preview #10reasonsToLove...apenguin by @catherine_barr - Just like with Lion, I really enjoyed reading it. I can't wait to share it with my friends in January!
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this was great book for kids. The illustrations were beautiful and the facts were fun and interesting. It wasn't too wordy which I think sometimes makes it hard for children to focus. I highly recommend this book.
This is a cute children's book that is also informative. Everyone loves penguins these days and it is a pleasant book with lots of interesting facts without overwhelming you with a lot of details. The illustrations are very pretty and vibrant. There are lots of interesting facts about the penguins such as the mother penguin lays the eggs but then passes them over to the dad and he keeps the egg warm until it hatches while the mother goes and searches for food. If the egg touches the ice it will freeze and not hatch. Also there are conservation tips and places you can go to help and learn more about penguins.
I love 10 REASONS TO LOVE A PENGUIN! It has the sweetest illustrations and so much info about these adorable creatures. There are 18 separate species, which I never knew. They also are incredibly engaging with their snuggly colonies, love of tobogganing, lying leaps, and salty sneezes. Highly recommended for readers big and small!
Grateful to the Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children’s and NetGalley for the early copy, in exchange for my true review.

This is an easy book to love! The illustrations are appealing and there are great penguin facts inside. Did you know that penguins toboggan down hills to move more quickly? That male Emperor penguins care for the unhatched eggs? That when penguins lose their feathers, they are land bound for two weeks? These and other interesting penguin facts may be found in this book. As an extra bonus, there are the Show You Love Penguins sections which tell about conservation and where you can watch penguins on the internet. Young nature and animal lovers are sure to enjoy this one.
'10 Reasons to Lovea Penguin' by Catherine Barr with ill...ustrations by Hanako Clulow is a picture book that gives 10 reasons to love penguins, as if anyone needed them.
The reader will learn that there are 18 species of penguin, and see many of them in action through the course of the book. The reasons to love penguins include some of the things they can do like leaping out of the water or seeing underwater. They march for their babies and have lots of friends. Along the way, the reader will learn how they can love a penguin too, with suggestions like buying food or power that doesn't harm penguins, or even paying to sponsor one.
The art is good with lots of the different animals and plants labelled for readers to learn along with. The facts are not overwhelming for young readers. I liked this book about penguins and the fun things they can do.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group-Frances Lincoln Children's Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
This an absolutely adorable book within a very serious message. It is a beautifully illustrated book and advises of some amazing facts about and reasons to love penguins but also advises how children and all people can change their lifestyles or complete actions to help ensure the continuing survival of penguin species and their natural habitat This is definitely a book all parents should read and enjoy with their children.
Each # is short and sweet, lovely illustrations alongside it. Good content for a classroom library or at-home library for the kiddos. It uses illustrations and is nonfiction. While I prefer realistic photography over illustrations I do understand the importance of art.. and these balance informative and art well.
downloaded through Netgalley in exchange for review. I'm auto-approved for this publisher ~
Besides the funny illustrations and the interesting information - relevant not only for children - the book also has a smart environmentalist message which may help the reader to increase his or her empathy for issues relevant to the protection of the environment.
I can never resist books about penguins, and this one was well worth my time. The illustrations are bright and adorable, with just enough text on each page to get the point across about the fact illustrated. Very informative as well as fun for young children.
Thank you to NetGalley for an electronic copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
An fun and informative picture book, explaining many reasons why we should "love" penguins (and other animals in the series).
The intent seems to be for this series to act as inspiration for learning about climate change and environmental issues, but this idea is only vaguely mentioned on the last page, in 2-3 sentences. It does not mention how climate change and other environmental issues impact the penguins, or make suggestions for how to help the penguins, so children will need to look elsewhere for further information about these issues.
However, the illustrations are vibrant and colorful, and the book is a fun way to entice children to start caring about these issues.
