I've enjoyed many Jeffrey Archer books, this one not so much. Easy to read with a clever storyline and twist, I found some parts a little confusing. Elena and her son Alex escape from Russia in a wooden crate when, following the death of her husband, they believe their lives are at risk. At this point the story cleverly splits and Elena and Alex finish their journey in both America and England simultaneously and we follow their lives in parallel.
I wanted to love this book because I am a fan of Jeffrey Archer. However, the formatting was so bad I couldn't follow it. Paragraph breaks mid-sentence, on every other line, different speaker paragraphs running together so you can't tell who's saying what. I'm reading on the latest Kindle software too.
I didn't really start the book, let alone finish it and I won't give a poor star rating to a book I haven't even read, nor will I be sharing any public reviews.
Sorry! 😞
I'm not sure if I want to say wow fantastic book or hmmm interesting but the ending... now for that I say wow! Am I the only one to be a little confused? Ah, no, more like a lot confused.
I enjoyed the book especially because I have an interest in Russia and it was eye opening at times. It's a bit like one step forward, two steps back.
My advice, if you are looking for something by Archer this isn't one of his best. But it is an enjoyable read. Just don't think too much because if you do then you start questioning everything.
Yes, I would recommend this book but be aware that it's not one of his best.Enjoy!
The last two words of this book had my falling off my chair!!
Fantastic book with a clever little twist right at the end
Highly recommended
It's many years since I read Kane and Able and really enjoyed it, I thought this might be just as good. Unfortunately although for most of the book I saw a glimpse of the great writing, at times it was rambling, especially the parts involving politics. This is a long book at 600+ pages and some of those could have been cut out.
I got very confused about who Sasha was - it seems he is a sliding doors version of Alexander who ends up in the USA, whilst Alex ends up in London. I guess it would have been too confusing for them to have the same name, but at times I found it hard to recall who had which storyline.
I enjoyed the book at times, especially the rags to riches stories of the characters. However, towards the end some strange things happen which just took the book into another dimension and I had to re read them to ensure I understood what had happened. To say more would just be a plot spoiler. I was then just super confused by the ending - maybe me, but it just became even more fantastical, which didn't fit with the overall book.
I actually bought this book in the end and decided to post my thoughts here.
What an amazing writer.
What a beautifully crafted, clever story.
Loved it !
More please!
Would highly recommend
Unfortunately I didn’t love this one as much as I was hoping to. I liked the idea behind it and the storyline, but it fell flat for me. I can see why some people love this one, but it just wasn’t for me.
Yet again Jeffrey Archer has written an absolute cracker of a read. I was drawn into this book from the beginning . Loved it
I read this book a while ago and it's stayed with me ever since - definitely a book I'll read again. It's such a brilliant story and I love the 'Sliding Doors' element where you see two possible scenarios unfold. Beautiful narrative and an excellent plot, I loved it!
A beautifully crafter book, this gives you everything you would expect and more from Jeffrey Archer,
Every time I read a Jeffery Archer book I’m amazed at what an amazing writer he is.
Easy to read and a beautifully crafted story.
Loved it !
It is a long time since I have read a book written by Jeffrey Archer and I am not convinced by this title at all I am sorry to say. The impression given is that Elena and her son Alex/Sasha flee Russia fearing for their lives and the story splits depending on whether they sail to England or America. Their lives are fairly similar whichever route they took and takes on a fairytale existence. Suddenly towards the end the two young men almost meet, other characters mistaking each for the other which was completely confusing. As for the promised final twist I am afraid it left me cold. Neither the style of writing nor the characters engaged me.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Jeffrey Archer/Pan Macmillan for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
One get to leave the Soviet Union, one has to stay. The twists and turns of their fate is told in this highly enjoyable novel. The master storyteller does it again.
Another great read from Jeffrey Archer. Taking you through the lives and generations of a family, kept me hooked right from the beginning. Excellent.
Another hugely gripping book from Jeffrey Archer, as always, lots of twists and turns, but kept me interested the whole time. A great read to lose yourself in.
Fabulous book. Russia, a family father murdered by the KGB - wife and son smuggled out of the country hidden in a crate. Here the story splits and seems to follow 2 destinations and 2 different outcomes....merging in a thrilling climax back in Russia. Too good to disclose the ending! Please read this book, it is superb.
Well written novel by Jeffrey Archer. It is many years since I have read one of his books and found this one very enjoyable if a little confusing. Recommended.
I was hooked from the beginning. I loved the twist in the story. I felt the ending was a bit rushed and not typical of Mr Archer.
An excellently rich novel with brilliant characters and a very clever concept. Would definitely recommend!!
Kane and Able has to be one of my all time favourite reads. I don't know whether because of this book I was expecting too much from Heads you Win. I just could not connect with this book and really struggled to get to the end.
