Stunning photographs to accompany some truly inspiring British walks. The book is laid out in an excellent way and easy to use with clear and concise advice for each walk as well as the authors own experience / story, which to be honest I mostly ignored but it did give you an idea of what they thought of as good / challenging / interesting etc. I just wish we had had an opportunity to use the book for our holiday in Cornwall and Devon
As someone who wants to take up hiking more seriously, the opportunity from Netgalley and Harper Collins to provide an honest review of The Times Britain’s Best Walks was timely and welcomed.
Covering the whole of the UK in 200 walks, this is a fantastic book for experienced walkers and those interested in taking up this activity. In it, Christopher Somerville provides a wonderful description of his own experience during the walk, describing the terrain and local sights. This is helped by the stunning photography.
Included is a map of each of the routes you can take as well as directions to the location of the walk, parking and where to get something to eat or drink. This book is highly recommended and should inspire you to get up and get out.
5 stars!
A real 'coffee table' book, the photography is stunning. I liked the layout, it works very well. Each walk is accompanied by a map (of course) and information on how to get there, accommodation and where to eat. The author includes a personal anecdote which gives you a sense of the place, including some historical context or a bit about the local wildlife. As I am from Shetland I was particularly interested in the Shetland walk, I enjoyed the detail the author added about being attacked by bonxies (this is the local name for Arctic Skuas) they're renowned locally for their aggression during nesting season.
My only suggestion would be it could have had a more detailed contents page, rather than just listing the general geographic areas, though I understand that there are 200 walks to list so probably just an editing choice. I read the book on Adobe digital editions and it was very slow (I think due to the large images) so it was more of an issue for me. Overall it was a lovely read and made me want to get out and discover more of the countryside.
A beautiful book of the countryside in the UK. The author has obviously had a great time walking these routes and the descriptions show it. Having settled in the south west I am accustomed to the moors and have already walked a few of these routes, although you will need a more detailed map this info is given and the basic pointers. The pictures are fabulous.
I am sorry but I could not download this book properly and would not be able to review it with any honesty. From what I could see it would make a good present for my parents.
An excellent selection of walks covering Britain from Guernsey in the Channel Islands to Hermaness in the Shetlands. Judging from the areas I know best, such as Cumbria, I’m impressed at the variety of walks. By that I mean that it’s not the usual lazy collection of ‘honeypot’ walks but a thoughtful choice of both popular and less well known routes. The photography is also very good. I’d happily add this book to my walking shelf.
This is very informative and detailed book outlining a variety of walks throughout the British Isles. There are a variety of difficulties and lengths of walks and are arranged in the book geographically. Each walk includes a detailed map of the area and has key information in relation to the length difficulty and terrain. This is a lovely gift for someone who is embracing the staycation or simply wants to explore of what we have at home.
A fantastic book full of walks for virtually every area of the country, it is well set out by region. Each walk takes a page of the book, easy to photograph to take on your walk. There is an introduction explaining what you should see on each walk. Alongside the map is a start and finish; how to get there (including where to park); walking distance; where to locate refreshments; ideas for accommodation and suggested further reading. This is a wonderful book to browse and be inspired by. I can't wait to try out some of the walks close by. I was slightly disappointed that there are no walks in the East Yorkshire region, where the Wolds way begins. Thank you to Net Galley for an ARC.
A good book to give you ideas on walks throughout the country. It was nice to get information about the areas. I feel a more detailed map or description may be needed if you haven’t got an ordinance survey map handy. Can’t wait to try some walks whilst away from home.
Great walk with hundreds of walks around Britain. Certainly a great tool for those that love walking and want to explore more places. The only downside is the lack of pictures. It would’ve been nice to have a picture from each walk rather than just a few dotted throughout the book. Overall, a fantastic book to get your family out and about.
Unfortunately I am not living in a picturesque part of Britain, but still was able to find 3 good walks close to me. I wasn't aware of two of them!
I loved the way this book gives you the feeling of the area first, what you should see/hear, and the history behind. We are going to holiday soon to Dorset and I am already inspired by this book. I will definitely have a peek to this one when I am visiting other counties. I wish there was more pictures though!
