I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. Except I am biased, because I love cats!
I grew up with cats, and remember reading books about them and how fascinating it was to apply what I read to our two scruffy moggies. This book is aimed at kids but will be something everyone in a cat household will pick up. Established cat lovers will enjoy it and I would buy it for households getting their first cat, no matter what age you are.
You'll better understand what's going on with those expressive eyes and pouffy-tails, and pick up some cool facts about the species and how long they've been part of our lives.

My 21 year old read this to my 7 year old the other day and they both really had fun with it. The book is filled with great color pictures of cats and all kinds of information about why cats do the things they do, from what that slow blink means (I like you and feel safe and relaxed around you) to whether rubbing against you really means they're marking you with scent glands to say you're theirs (maybe not, it could just be that they're showing affection).

Note that there is a bit that might bother sensitive children who love other animals besides just cats, such as a picture of a cat with a dead mouse in its mouth (and the advice to praise cats for bringing dead things to the doorstep because they're being good hunters).

All in all, this is a fun and informative book that cat-loving kids of all ages are likely to really enjoy.

My rating system:
1 = hated it
2 = it was okay
3 = liked it
4 = really liked it
5 = love it, plan to purchase, and/or would buy it again if it was lost

I read a digital ARC of the book for the purpose of review.

A great book to learn a lot about cats and their habits for cat lovers, cat owners, people wanting to have a cat, or simply people wanting to know more about cats in general. It is simply explained and I would definitely recommend it to young children. Bonus point for all the cat pics included!

I don’t normally comment on formatting of ARCs, but unfortunately due to the nature of this book, the formatting is integral and because it was not formatted correctly for Kindle or Adobe Digital Editions, I had a difficult time assessing the quality of the content. From what I could decipher, it seems like a great introduction to cats and cat behaviour.

I held off reviewing this title for some time in hopes that an update would correct the formatting issues, but after checking periodically and this not being the case, I’ve had to give this limited feedback. I would be very happy to provide a more comprehensive review if an updated, digitally formatted, file was made available.

"How To Speak Cat"

Not at all what I expected! Even better!
I downloaded the file right away and opened it to see what it was really about and thinking I would read it later as I had things to do but once I started reading it I couldn't put it down!
Full of info, facts, advice, games/tests... I loved the cats vs dogs... cats think : 'what's in it for me?' / dogs think : 'tell me what you want' SO TRUE! And cats are 'sleepy couch potatoes' ! Yes !

And the photos are simply amazing, beautiful!

I'm a cat person, owned by 3 cats, so I love everything about cats.

I loved everything about this book! The way it's written, it's funny, it's for everybody! Easy to understand. It covers everything you need to know, everything you've always wanted to understand. I have several books about cats but this one is something else!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this book. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.

An enjoyable book full of fun content to interact with your cat... but no massively new revelations for someone who’s had a cat for most of her life (not the same one!!) There were some interesting facts about cats besides behaviour insights.

Unfortunately marred by layout issues and split pictures which made it difficult to engage with the material on the kindle. I was hoping that my children might enjoy it but the layout issues made it impossible for them to appreciate the book.

I expect this is due to the ARC copy that I received. I would recommend buying the paperback !!

3.5* would be great for the kids

This book surprised me! It was WAY more informational that I ever expected! It gave a ton of info and examples while still reminding the reader that cats are individually different. I would totally get this book for my cat living friends or my son or his class since he and his classmates love non-fiction educational books about animals! I’m sure my son would feel like an expert after reading this!

I read this book in only one sitting. Needless to say it was a fast, enjoyable and informative read, even if you already are familiar with cats. It’s filled with great insights and tips to better understand our feline friends. You also learn more about their historical background, all the while admiring beautiful pictures of kittens.

A great tool for adults and young children willing to adopt a little ball of furry joy!

I loved this cute little book! How to Speak Cat had a lot of cute photographs of cats, facts that I didn't know, and a variety of fun layouts. I almost never read nonfiction, but this guide inspires me to read more animal books. I didn't know that house cats are the only species of cat that can hold their tails straight up. How to Speak Cat reminds me of the Zoobooks I read when I was little and loved.

My daughter absolutely loved this book. What a great way to share some scientific information with kids!

An admitted cat person, I really enjoyed this book. The author combines some good history with common behaviors we all see in our cats. The pictures are nice, and I especially enjoyed the combination of anatomy and physiology to help up understand why cats are they way they are, and do the things they do.

There is always something new to learn about living with cats and this is an easy, informative and entertaining way to learn more.

Thank you to HarperCollins and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book in an exchange for an honest review.

I'm going to start off by saying, the kindle version of this is very difficult, almost impossible to read. But of what I could read, I liked. It's informative as well as fun. My niece, who is 4, would probably like this as well. Although she can't read yet, she would like to see the pictures while someone read to her.

All in all, I will definitely think about picking up a physical copy of this so I can read some of the parts that were difficult on the kindle as well as to see the pictures.

Thank you again to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read/review this!

Another wonderful guide from National Geographic Kids! How to Speak Cat is very informational and also super adorable too. There are so many interesting facts about cats and cute pictures of sweet kitties too! Kids are sure to love this little guide. I would recommend especially if you are working on a project about animals, or if you LOVE cats.

I was excited to read this book when I first saw it listed as a dARC choice on NetGalley and looked forward to reading it even more after reading the table of contents. The number of pages caused me to wonder if my 4th and 5th graders would put that much time into reading a non-fiction book, but I knew if National Geographic was publishing it, the photographs would be outstanding and might keep students engaged. Unfortunately, the advance reader copy did not translate well into digital form and photographs were sliced, didn’t align with text, etc. In fact, word and picture alignment was so poor throughout my electronic copy that I didn’t make it too far into the book before I moved on to something else. However, the topics covered and the credentials of the author still leave me intrigued and I will add it to my library consideration list and will research it further when the book is released in its final form, hence my 3 star rating.

First of all, thanks to NetGalley for approving my request and sending me an eARC in exchange for a honest review.
You have to know English isn’t my first language, so feel free to correct me if I make some mistakes while writing this review.

What can I say? I've always been a cat-person.
I live in the country so I've seen my fair share of strays in my front yard looking for something to eat and some of them were actually friendly. Most of them though were scared of humans.
But I had two cats living inside my house - and now I have the third one since my previous beloved ones passed away. So I basically know how to speak cat - I know when Alaska is angry or she wants to play, when she is in a mood for cuddles or she gets annoyed and she wants me to remove my hand.

This book is suitable for young readers or for someone who's thinking about adopting a cat - especially a kitten, if you wanna try to train him/her. But you have to remember that every cat has its own personality and you don't have to feel bad if your cat isn't the portrait of the perfect cuddling pet - she/he still love you.
You'll learn to to read their body language from whiskers to ears, from eyes to tail. You'll learn all the different sounds they make so it'll be easier for you to understand them.

Still, I learned something new that I didn't know before - I learned what it means when Alaska rubs her nose on my wrist while I'm feeding her.

Also, there are tons of beautiful picture inside so I recommend it.

Easy 5 star as it's cat related and I love anything cats. Great read for a younger audience obviously but still enjoyed it at my reading level.

Fun and simple, great for those kiddos who really love all animals as well as those who love cats in particular. I like the information on training that is included!
