I love these kind of books and the whole story was very gripping from the start! I found myself not wanting to put it down and also bought myself a physical copy
This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended
Omg wow this book is amazing it's full of twists and turns it will keep you up all night I really enjoyed this book
Dear Publishers.
Firstly, thanks very much for the opportunity to read and review this title.
Unfortunately, I just wanted to let you know that I won't be reading and reviewing this title due to the large number of titles that I currently have on my shelf, and my inability to read them all. Also, I feel that a review at this late stage probably won't assist you or the author. For these reasons, I've decided to tidy up of my Netgalley shelf and I will be removing this one from my TBR pile.
I hope to be able to read and review further titles for you in the future.
Thanks and Regards
Kim
It’s taken me a long time to get to read this book, and having read it I really enjoyed it.
Thanks netgalley for giving me another good book to read.
Sarah’s husband Philip goes away on a business trip, and no one knows if he is dead or alive.
After seven years he has returned, he looks nothing like the Philip Sarah married, and she is terrified of him.
He then is called the stranger upstairs.
A thrilling read from beginning to end. There is more twists and turns than you can imagine, and the last twist in the story was so unexpected! Recommended.
Unfortunately this was a book I couldn't finish. I tried picking it back up a few times hoping it would live up to its thriller label but it didn't.
I found the book hard to get into, slow and unbelievable. I understood the need for the charade at first but it seemed to go on too long. While I was intreagued about the identity of the stranger, the book just didn't hold my interest enough to finish it and find out.
That being said, I have seen some good reviews for this book so it may just have been a case that this one wasn't for me but others will enjoy it.
Thank you for the chance to read and review this novel.
This a good modern thriller which has an amazing storyline. I enjoyed it very much especially the twist.
Intriguing story about a woman whose husband has returned home after being missing for 7 years....but is it her husband?! Strange and unrealistic but a decent read!
Sarah’s husband leaves for a trip but doesn’t return and seven years later a stranger appears in his place. Loved the description of the book, but didn’t enjoy reading it at all. It came across as dull (maybe better read in German?). The characters were awful and the plot not much better. I wanted and expected to like this novel but just couldn’t connect with it on any level - sorry!
This is a very enjoyable, easy to read thriller that gets you guessing as the plot thickens. The story introduces yous to Sarah, a single mum who's husband went missing years ago. She is plodding through life , raising her son when one day out of the blue she receives a phone call to say her husband has been found and was returning home. Throughout the story I kept coming to different conclusions on how it would end and I was pleasantly surprised by the actual conclusion. I rate this book 3 *
This book took me a while to get into and then i started to enjoy it but for me it then sort of petered away - almost like the author ran out of steam (much like I imagine the main character, Sarah, surely must have). I was left feeling almost cheated although thankfully the author did tie up the majority of loose ends and explain things in the final chapters.
Sarah’s husband has been missing for seven years - he went on a business trip and never returned leaving behind Sarah and their young son, Leo. Now seven years later and the foreign embassy have contacted Sarah to tell her that her husband has been found alive and well and is coming home to her. Sarah has dreamt of this moment since he went missing but when he gets off the plane she is startled - who is this man and why is he saying that he is her husband? He seems to know a lot about Sarah and the lives she and her husband (Philip) led but how and why? What does he want from Sarah?
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
This book was quite different to books I’ve read before
It starts off when a woman’s missing husband turns back up and she’s utterly convinced he is not her husband
I found myself turning the pages quick because I wanted to know if he really was a stranger or if she was barmy
Well written fast paced I really enjoyed it
Honestly, this is a bloody hard book to review. I had a hard time getting into the book, the only reason I kept going was the fact that I wanted to know the truth about the stranger. I was a bit frustrated at first, I mean come one, how could you just keep up the charade? If a man steps out of an airplane and is a total stranger, would you not say so? There must be photographs to prove the fact. However, all this, my questions, my musings got answered at the end. Still, I'm not even sure I totally liked the book. It's just not so thrilling and that's not a good thing for a book labeled a thriller. The very last part explains a lot and it's an interesting twist.
The Stranger Upstairs turned out to be not what I expected. I found it to be a so-so book with an ending that lifted the book thanks to it being not at all that I expected it to be. I both read and listen to this book's audio version (at work). Listening to it I think made a difference since I couldn't skim the book and it got me past some slow parts.
I was totally gripped by this book after a bit of a slow start and read it in one evening. I couldn't wait to find out who the man was, what his plans were and what he had in store for Sarah. Enjoyed the alternating narratives between Sarah and "the stranger", the latter of which slowly revealed hints and twists that left Sarah reeling. It's quite a claustrophic read for the most part and the tension builds well. It's quite clever in that it's hard to know which of the characters can be trusted the most as things are revealed about Sarah. I wasn't quite sure what to make of the ending and I've dropped it down a star rating from what I thought I would give as I felt the plot lost its way a bit after 90%. A very good read though and it had me constantly second guessing throughout until things came to a head.
A great book. Kept me guessing throughout and I was glad to see that the ending brought everything to a satisfactory conclusion. A book that kept me hooked.
I enjoyed the concept of this novel, unfortunately this book did not pull me in and I could not finish this book.
This novel was not to my personal taste sadly. It was too slow moving and I couldn't get into it. I found it rather far-fetched. Thank you to NetGalley and Pan publishers.
I really struggled with this book. I didn't like the characters & found the story line to be very far fetched & a lot of the book didn't add up. The concept was good but it didn't flow on paper.
I would have stopped reading it but carried on as I had received an advance copy for an honest review.
What is the worst thing you have done? Seven years ago, Sarah's husband, Philip disappeared, leaving her a single mother to their son Leo. Seven years later, out of nowhere, she gets a call that Philip has been found and is on his way home. The only problem is when Philip arrives, Sarah is shocked that it is not her husband. He says he is and the authorities say he is but Sarah is adamant that this is not her husband. Who is this man?
What an intense read this is! I immediately felt for Sarah and her situation, I found her likeable but also intriguing, I was aware there were layers and secrets to her and I was itching to find out what they were. Raabe quickly informs us of the situation, that Sarah's husband is missing but is being returned. Here the fun begins, as Sarah is adamant he is a stranger and the stranger is adamant he is Philip. We enter a battle of wills to see who will be victorious. Along the way, we learn more about Sarah, and her relationship with Philip and see her desperate battle for the truth.
Raabe is very clever with this plot, it is actually only set over a couple of days, but what an intense couple of days they prove to be. There is no let up in the tension and drama and I struggled to catch my breath amongst it all. The other clever aspect is the plot is quite simple but it is very effective and I was desperate to uncover the truth. There are twists and turns within the revelations and I was so excited about all of the plot revelations.
'The Stranger Upstairs' is a sublime thriller from Raabe. Very simple in theory but pulled off incredibly effectively, always leaving the reader wanting more. It only helps that Sarah is a likeable character and I enjoyed following her on her journey of quite literal discovery.
Thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for an advance copy.
