Horse's are beautiful animals. I loved this book and the beauty Bob Langrish has brought out in it. He traveled to 6 continents to make this this amazing book. He shows the horses in all different settings, different colors, different breeds, different ages, and has truly brought out the beauty or these animals. I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed the photos in this book.
If you love horses this book is for you.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com and chose to leave this review.
I really enjoyed looking at this book. The real stars are the horses. The photographer travels around the world photographing horses and does a wonderful job of capturing their spirit. The text is very light and not as interesting as the photographs. Any fan of Horses and photograph will enjoy this book. This book will make a wonderful gift.
Bob Langrish's World of Horses is a stunning collection of equine photos from around the world. There's plenty of information about these magnificent animals accompanying the photos, discussing how traits and behaviours are shaped by environment. The book itself is organised by terrain rather than by breed, or chronologically. Tiny maps show where each picture was taken. I do wish that the pictures were bigger, however I had a digital copy, bound by tablet size constraints. Overall, though, I lived this collection! I grew up on a horse farm, and spent a substantial amount of my childhood around them. This book brought back many happy memories. Perfect for horse lovers of any stripe!
***Many thanks to the Netgalley and Storey Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Bob Langrish is a well known British equine photographer. His website mentions numerous books, one notable for me was the "Smithsonian Handbook: Horses" by Elwyn Hartley Edwards. So when I reached for "Bob Langrish’s World of Horses" by Jane Holderness-Roddam, I expected a coffee table book, double-page spreads, and variety of shots from tight close ups to sweeping environmental protraits.
The book met only some of those expectations. First, it is for sure not a coffee table book. It is also not purely a photography book. Coming as a result of long, 40 years lasting career as an equine photographer, "Bob Langrish’s World of Horses", the book is full of stories - of horses, travel to take pictures of those beautiful animals or anecdotes behind the photographs themselves. However, the words were not written by a photographer himself, they were relayed by another person. It is fairly unusual nowadays, for modern photographers, and takes away from the book experience for me.
The images are organized, interestingly, around environments in which the photograph was taken (chapters like rivers, forests or savannas). It shows wild and domesticated animals alike. There are also maps on each page showing the locations where the photographs were taken, and while they indeed seem to be encompassing the whole globe, the majority is taken in UK, USA, and France.
While the photographs are amazing, I was extremely disappointed by the size of them. The book is more like a family trip photo book, with many smaller pictures crammed on pages. Another huge disappointment, the pre-print digital version I received had not been color corrected. I hope the final version has real colors!
I wish the "Bob Langrish’s World of Horses" was designed to do the justice to the photographs it presents. But perhaps the images are enough for true horse lovers.
Gorgeous coffee table book with somewhat boring blurbs about the photographer/author's often contrived methods. Fans of Langrish from his long history in the horse world and horse lovers in general will love the photos as well as the snippets of history about the various breeds.
Was unable to preview this book, which looks simply gorgeous from the cover photograph, such a disappointment! Books like this are great to have in libraries, everybody loves to borrow them.
Beautiful photography that you can get in lost in and dream. Horses in all sizes and in different areas of life. They run with such grace and beauty. The narration carries you all over world as the author finds the herds in their natural habitat and their place in our world. God's majestic creatures. A book you will pick up time and time again. The photographer has a way of capturing them at their best.
The author and photographer has 40+ years experience in capturing the most stunning shots of horses. It is a beautiful book for all horse lover and artists as reference material including lots of information about the different horse breeds of the world.
This is a really nice book, very informative in many ways but mostly superb photography of amazing horses in amazing places, running free.
Anyone that is interested in photography, which includes animals, will gain some education on how to get an animal to pose for that perfect natural photo. Likewise anyone interested in horses will experience some fabulous eye candy from the photos. There are lots of tidbits on information about the different breeds and location, some of which was new to e and extremely interesting
Beautiful book
What an absolutely striking collection of photographs. The subtitle for this book is very accurately named; Bob Langrish set out to photograph the most magnificent horses in the world, and he certainly succeeded. These photographs are absolutely beautiful – words cannot do them justice.
I honestly would have been happy having this book simply be a collection of these wonderful photographs. However, they took things a few steps farther. For one thing all the photographs are nicely organized into neat categories. This helped the flow and kept themes going throughout, so it was a nice tough. Additionally each horse was accompanied by a map showing the location of where they can be found. This was not something I expected to find here, but it was very much appreciated. It really goes to show that sometimes going above and beyond really can enhance the showing of a collection.
I honestly believe that any fans of horses or of Bob Langrish’s work would really appreciate reading this. The photos are beautiful, the maps and details informative. This would make for a really nice gift as well – especially for the young horse enthusiast in your life (we all know somebody like that).
Bob Langrish’s World of Horses A Master Photographer’s Lifelong Quest to Capture the Most Magnificent Horses in the World by Bob Langrish is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This is a stunning book of the most gorgeous horses from around the world. You don't have to guess where in the world they are from either, the author has a map detailing where each type of horse is from, a brief history of the horses, and some other wonderful tidbits. This is a book I could look at all day! It is one of those books that make me want to share with the world, I have to get one for my coffee table, (boy is it getting crowded, lol). It is a feel-good book just looking at the photos! Loved it and the information in it! Great job!
would love to have seen this book properly but the photos did not view at all in my e-copy from Net Galley. This has been a problem with several NG books recently, but by no means all.
The author has travelled around the world and photographed horses. I found only a brief paragraph under each photo and a map which was sometimes confusing. The map showed a dot for South Africa, where the photo of Friesian horses was taken; but although the text says the breed originated in the Netherlands I thought it would be good to have a different map marking on the country of origin.
If I get a version of the book with photos I will revisit this review. I downloaded an e-ARC from Net Galley (three times, no better). This is an unbiased review.
Lovely photographs of houses around the world. I never realised just how different horses can be. Full of interesting information.
This book was exactly what I expected-a book full of beautiful horse photography. I only had two minor quibbles with the book--the first is that the text that accompanied the photos was rather banal, and sometimes even silly. The second was that the photos all felt as if they were taken from a similar distance away from the animals, and this sameness began to make me less impressed with each individual photo as I saw it. I think if there had been a bit more variety--some extreme closeups juxtaposed with mid-distance and long-distance shots, I might have appreciated each and every beautiful image just a little bit more.
But, if you like horses, I think you absolutely will enjoy looking at the pictures in this book.
Bob Langrish has compiled some of the most beautiful pictures inside this book. The natural beauty of horses with scenic backgrounds leaves you breathless. A must for any horse lover! It reminds you that we only get a small glimpse at nature and to enjoy it!
Awesome and so beautiful!!! The pictures in this are beyond beautiful, I highly recommend this book for any and all horse crazy people out there!
Beautiful variety of horses photographed, all with explanatory captions. A truly stunning animal no matter where the surroundings.
Bob Langrish’s World of Horses is such a beautiful book, with gorgeous photographs taken on six continents. This master artist with a camera captured these magnificent creatures in their natural habitats and the results are stunning! Includes spirited text by Olympic gold medalist Jane Holderness-Roddam, who shares the backstory of Langrish’s adventures, as well as details on how horse behaviors and traits vary by habitat. A highly recommended visual Valentine to a most incredible animal, the horse. 5/5

If you are a horse lover, there is much to admire about the collection of images in Bob Langrish's World of Horses. I have only ridden a horse once, and that was about 14 years ago, but I have never forgotten the experience and would love to repeat it one day. I find horses fascinating and beautiful creatures, and that is what led me to request this title for review. And the photography is stunning. I also liked how the images were arranged via terrain. However, one thing spoilt this collection for me: Where were the Icelandic horses? The book is titled 'World', but Iceland was conspicuous by its absence, even though they have a truly delightful and unique breed of horses over there. I even went back and flicked through the pages again, in case I'd missed them. But, no, they were not represented. This did make me sad. Also, as someone who likes horses but knows little about them, I would have appreciated a guide to the different breeds somewhere in the book, even just as a brief appendix listing each breed's location and traits. So, overall, I give this three and a half stars. It was lovely, but to my mind there were a couple of things missing which, if included, would have made it perfect.
