Hello lovelies! It's my pleasure to offer a review for this stunner of a debut from Ronnie Turner
We meet John, Miller and Maisie. All very different people from different walks of life that come together in one catastrophic event.
John is a very likeable kind family man with a new baby on the way. Everything is good in his life until his daughter Bonnie is kidnapped, turning John's life inside out.
Maisie is a nurse in an ICU unit and is caring for a man and his wife. A dedicated nurse and good at her job, but there is something about this family that is bringing her own heartache back to the forefront of her mind.
Miller is a very clever young boy. His obsession with someone leads him to take actions to make sure he achieves his goal with absolutely no compunction. He will do anything...Miller's chapters are also set in the past.
So how do all of these characters relate to each other and bring about such a brilliant story? Each chapter is told by a one of our protagonists so we get a nice rounded view of each person and slowly see their stories come together.
This isn't a book all about the action, which in fact makes it much more engaging. Lies Between Us is a very character driven. Turner is brave enough to delve into some very dark and murky waters with the subject matter. Reading about what is happening to John's daughter Bonnie is deeply disturbing. But in doing so you really become connected to John and desperately want this to have a happy ending.
I really loved Miller's chapters too. Although again deeply disturbing and an abhorrent character, his chapters actually gave me shivers. He is one seriously messed up young man. But I do love a good baddie! At times you feel rather sorry for him, but then think are his version of events as a young boy twisted due to his mental state?
Maisie was one that was the most 'out there' for me. I really liked her and felt so desperately sorry for her, I just couldn't figure out how or why she was linked to the main plot.
But when all of the loose ends pulled together: holy guacamole! Fasten your seatbelts folks as this is one ride that will leave you reeling. I really thought that I had it and had guessed what was going on, oh boy was I wrong! I don't want to give away any spoilers, this is a twist best left going in blind.
For a debut book this is an absolute smasher. Turner writes like a seasoned pro and you will be hooked like a fish unable to resist the pull of the line.
A solid 4 star read for me!
I would like to thank Netgalley and HQ Digital for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
First of all, it's SO exciting to see another fellow book blogger getting her book published! I've been looking forward to read Lies Between Us ever since I first saw that cover, and there is no doubt that this is a very cleverly constructed psychological thriller debut. I admit it was a slowburner for me for reasons mentioned below, but above all the potential shines through and I will already be looking forward to what she will come up with next. Let's talk a bit about my experience with Lies Between Us. Like I said before, I admit it took me some time to get used to the multiple POVs and I was confused as to how everything fit together at times. Especially the second person POV took some time getting used to, but that doesn't mean it's badly written or doesn't fit the story. In fact, it only enhances the dark and slightly disturbing feeling around this character and adds to the overall suspenseful atmosphere of the book. There is no doubt that Lies Between Us is a complex and very cleverly executed psychological thriller that will keep you on edge. I did guess come of the twists though and some of the names are misleading... Those who have the chance to read this debut will probably understand what I'm referring to (don't want to give away any spoilers!). Also, I was left with some questions after the final page, and would have liked to have some details explained to avoid the confusion. Still, Lies Between Us was a very satisfying psychological thriller with one heck of a creeper as one of the main characters... Talk about getting a look inside the head of a very disturbing individual! Fans of the genre will have a great time read this one.
While a slowburner for me, once I got the hang of the story I found myself to be absolutely hooked. Lies Between Us is a well crafted and complicated psychological thriller with multiple POVs and flashbacks that will keep you on your toes as you try to take everything in and fit everything together. The writing is solid and especially 'Miller's character development is extremely well done and spot on; he sure will give you goosebumps before the story is over. And despite a few minor problems mentioned above, I enjoyed spending time with Lies Between Us and it is without doubt a very promising debut.
A beautiful book to read!
The story flowed very naturally and was interesting and gripping. The characters were believable and I could really connect with them while reading.
LIES BETWEEN IS By Ronnie Turner is definitely one to read. I am not sure if this author has written a book before but this one blew me away. We meet three people in this story all with a different story to tell but when they collide the story explodes. I could not put this one down and actually had tor end it a second time. No the norm for me. I do want to add that it is told in three different perspectives at first but as you get close to the end the whole story comes together so well it will shock you. This was written so well I saw t hat others were still trying to unerstand the book. I did read it a second time because I did not give it my full attention at first. I HIGHLY recommend this roller coaster of a ride.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
5+ stars ⭐️ out of 5
Not everyone is quite what they seem!
I was so impressed by The Lies Between Us. This may be a debut novel, but it is assured, eloquently written and brilliantly plotted so that I was absorbed into the story from the very first moment. Ronnie Turner writes with a lively and vivacious style through a fantastic range of sentence structure that really appealed to me as a reader. The short chapters add a breathless pace too so that there's an urgency and dynamism to the narrative.
The characters are vividly drawn and the first person sections are so chilling that I felt unsettled as I read them. What is so good is the utterly convincing portrait of obsession Ronnie Turner paints. She presents with terrifying accuracy the way in which love can become evil in an unbalanced mind. It's hard to say too much without spoiling the story but I found the terrifying brutality contrasted and balanced by supreme love so effective.
I loved the skilful manner in which the strands of the narrative are drawn together like inevitable DNA. I was entirely enthralled, entertained and often appalled in a manner that didn’t allow me to stop reading. I found The Lies Between Us scarily convincing and completely absorbing. What a debut!
i am SO confused right now and i don't know if it's because i'm an idiot or if this was genuinely confusing??
so yeah i can't really... elucidate my thoughts about this without having some Mega Spoilers but in very vague, general terms i just thought this was trying too hard to be clever, and complex, and red herring-y - but it ended up not really working.
Found this book hard to follow at times but did enjoy it. All in all an excellent debut thanks for the preview
I'm really not sure about this book - I enjoyed it in parts but also found some aspects really aggravating, such as the 'mystery aliases' of the family in ICU and the dodging back and forth between times and narrator, which can work sometimes but was too frequent here. The ending seemed too unlikely and contrived to have been genuine, so was far from satisfactory.
I have been looking forward to reading Ronnie's debut novel from the moment I found out about it, and I was not in the slightest bit disappointed. It's quite a complex presentation for a novel with 3 seeming separate threads of story going on each with vastly different characters, content and timescales. It takes a few chapters to get into but I would strongly recommend people to stick with it as all will become clear. My problem with the book was not one I can criticise the author for, just myself. In fact it is a compliment to the author as my brain was constantly looking for the connection between the threads even when I had put the book down - there had to be clues there somewhere but I seemed to be missing them! This book had well and truly got under my skin and into my grey cells.
The characters are so diverse in this novel; Miller was so evil for a child it made for some very unsettling scenes; John and Julia really don't deserve the pain caused by the abduction of their daughter as they are such loving parents - I physically felt the despair they were going through due to the excellent way their scenes were written; and Maisie, I wasn't sure about at first. A bit of an enigma who fell under my suspicious spotlight until I understood what she was hiding.
The pace of this book is so clever as the fibres of the story are eked out perfectly to the end without becoming negatively frustrating. I wanted to know the answers yet I didn't want the story to end.
As a debut novel this is mightily impressive and I am so excited to know what Ronnie has in store for us in future.
My review will feature at www.sandiesbookshelves.blogspot.co.uk as part of the blog tour in October - all views are my own and are unbiased. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in advance of publication.
This was pretty wild! The story alternates between three different narrators and jumps in timeline so you have to pay attention. It’s a bit crazy and at times heartbreaking. It’s a lot of story to take in and I was confused at times, rereading sections. There were some clues, looking back, but several twists that surprised me. The way the characters are linked together is quite clever.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and HQ Digital for a copy in exchange for a review.
3.5 Stars
3 different people, 3 different stories and 3 points of view! This is a book of threes. It is not easy to read because the characters do tend to rub you the wrong way and get under your skin. John and Julia’s missing daughter is a story that is heart stopping. It’s painful to read and you can feel their desperation. Masie’s story makes you realize what life as an ICU nurse can be like. Miller’s story is the most disturbing, repulsive and scary. He’s truly evil. He is the reason I won’t give this book a 4 star instead of 3.5. Reading about him was very upsetting and while I give kudos to the author for invoking such a strong reaction the fact remains that when I read a book that is a thriller/mystery I don’t want to feel something that I would define as border line devilish. I want tension and suspense, not pure evil. Reading about a child that did some of the things that Miller does was the hardest part of this book for me. Most of this book is not confusing really but it does need some re-reading in certain places. You need to read patiently to see how the seemingly 3 u related stories are going to collide. The author has done a fabulous job of running 3 individual plots that seem like they could be their own books and then intricately weaving them in to each other to tie in seamlessly. Disclaimer: if you believe that all children are innocent angels and you don’t want that belief shaken then don’t read this book but if you can believe that some people are just born evil then I would surely recommend this book.
Right so my head is still spinning, I’m not quite sure if I understood the ending correctly as who did it was not who I thought it was or vice versa (if that makes sense) but I’m putting this down to how you should be feeling having read this book. You really need to keep your wits and brain cells about you when reading this book.
It is told in three narratives, Miller, Maisie & John. Miller’s narrative is based on his childhood which is quite dark, chilling, disturbing, a sociopath in the making! Maisie’s is told from the viewpoint of her being an ICU nurse looking after a patient named Tim, who was beaten up and left for dead and who may or may not recover. The third narrative is from John whose daughter has been kidnapped and her kidnapper is sending pictures of his little girl Bonnie in various states of distress and physical injuries, taunting both himself and his wife Jules. What do all these people have in common? Come on, I’m not going to tell you, you have to read it!!!
I initially found the book quite confusing flitting between the three stories, it was like I was reading three individual books but you need to stick with it as Ronnie Turner is laying the foundation and intrinsically and cleverly pulls them all together for an explosive ending. What a dark, intense, disturbing psychological thriller, outstanding.
Many thanks to Netgalley and HQ Digital for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
John, Maisie and Miller- 3 strangers, 3 different lives with 3 different stories however they are all connected to each other in some way.
Great read -Keeps you on your toes. This is the kind of book where you need to keep your white about you as you can so easily get lost in it and lose the story.
Thank you to both NetGalley and HQ Digital publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest, unbiased review
The debut novel by Ronnie Turner was an excellent read. I became engrossed immediately and the carefully developed plot was unusual in that there were three different, apparently unrelated, perspectives.
The narrative alternates between Miller, Maisie and John. Miller’s narrative is from a childhood, which is sinister and quite scary. Maisie’s viewpoint is as an ICU nurse who is looking after a patient who may not recover. John has had his daughter kidnapped and him and his wife receive notes and pictures of what the kidnapper is doing to their daughter.
The story line gradually began to intermingle and I became aware of how these characters could potentially know each other. Having said that I didn’t guess all the twists and turns.
‘Lies Between Us’ has a wicked twist.
I would like to thank NetGalley, HQ Digital and Ronnie Turner for my ARC in return for my honest review.
Excellent Read. Highly recommended.
I thought the writing was incredible. The writing style as it flicks between the various characters almost made me feel as if different authors had written each character and then meshed them together to make a book. The way the author adopted her writing to fit with the personalities of each character is really impressive. I haven’t noticed this done as well in any book i’ve read recently.
It doesn’t become apparent until much further on in the book how the various timelines and groups of characters fit together. By the time I was given some clues as to how the pieces of the puzzle join I was completely gripped wanting to know what the finished product was going to turn out like.
For me the making of any good thriller is where I am kept guessing through the majority of the book and this book did just that for me. Many books have been written previously with the theme around a missing child, but the twist the author has given this story made it a unique read for me and it will stand out in my mind apart from other books I have read around these topics. See if it stands out for you and give it a read! It’s a thumbs up from me and I can’t wait to see what the author thinks up for her next book.
For a debut novel this book reads very well and for me it slots well in to the busy, popular and very competitive psychological thriller genre - the story is definitely one that I enjoyed!
The book has some very well developed characters and I felt that their interaction within the story was completely on point and it really helps to carry the plot through to the ending. I enjoyed finding out more about them as the story progressed but I did guess quite a few key points in the plot before they were confirmed. It kept me engaged and I'd read it in 2 days.
I enjoyed the plot and how the story is told through several characters. In the main I didn't find it confusing but I will admit that I did have to read the ending more than once as I found it a tad disjointed but it didn't really detract too much from my enjoyment overall of the story.
Four stars from me, it is a well written story with a great set of characters and I loved the main storylines that run through it - looking forward to see what the author releases next!
3 main characters, 3 different stories... what is the common denominator? Well you’ll have to read and guess for yourself all the way until the end. The characters are so well written and the plot is very intricate and intense. You have to really pay attention... an excellent debut! And it’s not like every other missing child book! Thank goodness!
Three very different stories and three very different characters combine to bring us a twisted and intricately plotted tale. You might wonder at the beginning just how the author is going to merge them all together but believe me she does. She knits the intricate but devious strands together with some unique little twists in the pattern to provide a jaw dropping and chilling read!
At first it seemed quite difficult to connect each of the storylines, my brain cells were given a real work out as I tried to work out what the hell was going on! No easy solutions for armchair detectives here that's for sure!
Definitely a character driven novel, Lies Between Us, brings to the table three very different characters who will all worm their way under your skin
John and his wife Julia's daughter has gone missing and we witness his mental breakdown as they are tortured with photographs hinting at what is happening to her. Watching John unravel pulled my emotions all over the place, his pain was palpable and the author drew out that inner turmoil with a flair of expertise
Maisie is introduced as a nurse in ICU and her part in the book focuses very much on her own personal circumstances and the relationship she has built up with one of the patients and his family in the unit. It was a testament to ICU nursing to show the depth of feeling and personal investment that staff on the units bring to their role
Miller stood out head and shoulders above all the other characters; skin crawling, terrifying, chilling and disturbing are just some of the words I can think of to describe him. His story is told from the past and it was Miller's chapters that struck me to the core. I could feel the evil seeping out the pages as I read his narrative. The author has created what is possibly one of the most warped but compelling to read characters: he repulsed me but I wanted to know more, to read his story and to worm my way inside of his head.
As I said before this is definitely a character driven novel and as such is an intense read, the plot is intricate and ever so deliciously twisted! It is hard to believe that this is a debut novel from Ronnie Turner and with a mind as devious as the one who came up with this story I cannot wait to see what she pulls out the bag next!
Review will appear on my blog as part of the blog tour
A solid debut novel from an author that I have been looking forward to reading.
I had been cautious going into this, purely as I find psychological thrillers that have lies as a main thread (or important enough to the story to be in the title), normally don't agree with me, but as I had wanted to read the author, I thought I would give it a go regardless.
Outside of some mild confusion referring to the lies and wondering for large parts of the book just how it all would fit together, I loved everything else.
There are three distinct story threads, focusing on in two cases the nightmare their lives currently are, and the other tells the tale of a young mans past, of him being obsessed, of him putting on a good boy front, once he realised it would get him further than being his truly wicked self.
And it was this thread that actually held me interest the most, as I sort of had to know two what lengths he would go to, and the incidents highlighted from throughout his childhood, paint him as a monster.
Whereas in the other chapters, we have a intensive care nurse, who is bonding with her latest patient's family, a man in a vegetative state, and the wife and young child barely holding things together.
Then there is the man whose family is experiencing the worst thing ever, their little girl has been taken, no one even the police can work out where or why, and slowly photos with notes referring to the mans past, arrived signed by the daughter, which ramps up the tension and despair levels.
All three of the stories could easily have a a whole book devoted to just them, but instead the author weaves a tale that means you need all of these parts and that as the book progresses becomes more and more gripping to read.
At the start of each chapter or section there is a time stamp and date, and it took me a while to get used to the different dates and years, as the view points alternate.
This is a great starting block for this author's career and from what I have read I can only believe she will go from strength to strength, and I know I am eager to see what her next release brings.
Thank you to Netgalley and HQ Digital for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
One star is for books I didn't finish. With this one I made it up to 19 percent, but by then I realized I just wasn't interested in the outcome of these three story lines. The way it was written, it was hard to feel related to these people/characters and somehow it was confusing that within one story line... things were not chronologically. Like the abduction of the girl for instance.
