I love regency romance books. My God, this book was amazing! I have loved this series and this one was probably my favorite of them all. I’m feeling a little sad in that I don’t know if it’s the final in the series. I sure hope not. It’s been exciting and it feels like going back to visit with family as each characters return with each book. The love scenes are nothing short of hold your breath good. I highly recommend! Book gifted to me.
Well written and entertaining Historical romance with excellent character development. Not a traditional Regency as there's a modern feel to the dialogue, but a fun book to read all the same. I liked both Bryony and Max. This can be read as a stand alone. 4.5 stars.
I loved every page!
I haven’t read the previous five books in this series, but judging by “Lord of Vice”, I have really been missing out! I will read the rest of them ASAP because this novel was thoroughly delightful. The story has a fun tone interspersed with beautiful romance and populated by intelligent characters.
Lady Bryony and Max Gideon are such great characters. I love them both, and the author let us get into their heads very well. Bryony is strong-willed, very intelligent, and has some unusual hobbies for an unmarried 23-year-old woman during the Regency period. She is very gifted at both mathematics and playing the violin. She uses her math skills to analyze investment opportunities, which led her to invest (under an assumed name) in an egalitarian men's gambling club and buy the property as well. She has been chafing under her baroness mother’s mission to get her married off. Max Gideon is the son of a dockworker and a seamstress, but he has worked hard to make his Cloven Hoof into one of the most successful gambling clubs in London. He dearly wishes to purchase the property from his anonymous business partner.
I adored how Bryony and Gideon interacted with each other. Gideon treated her with respect and listened to her ideas about business. Gideon had always had admirable respect for his brilliant sister, who is another fantastic character. Gideon is gorgeous, sexy, and also acts like a gentleman. I really like how Gideon does not practice any vices because he needs to keep his head on straight to reach his goals.
The only thing in the novel that seemed too far-fetched was how Bryony was able to sneak out of her house at all hours of the night and no one noticed. It also seemed unlikely that Bryony's older brother gave her men's clothing but did not worry about what situations she would get into while dressed as a man.
I highly recommend this novel to all Regency romance readers who want a fun, low-angst romance. I would call it mild to moderately steamy. I received a free advanced reading copy via Netgalley, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
Bryony is the last of the Grenville children left at home and unmarried, so her mother has given her a deadline: find someone within the month to get married to, or Mother will do it for her.
One of Bryony's skills is with numbers and risks, and she has built up a decent nest egg with various investments, including owning the land that the Cloven Hoof sits on.
Created to provide a club for men not able to get into the other gambling dens (often because they were not from the landed gentry, or had been blacklisted), the Cloven Hoof has become one of the most popular clubs where membership is purely at the owner's discretion rather than being a member of the ton. Maxwell Gideon is the owner of the Cloven Hoof, and intent to own the land it sits on. However, he doesn't know who his silent partner is, or why they are resisting the offer of him to buy the land. Bryony is curious as to why he wants it, so decides to spy before making the decision as to whether to sell or not. Unfortunately she gets found out. Intrigued by her business ideas and knowledge of numbers, he allows her to stick around in order to try and figure her out. In the process Bryony gets to meet Frances (his sister), and gets a better understanding of what drives Gideon to do what he does.
Having been born into poverty, Gideon has little confidence of making his way in high society and doesn't believe that he is good enough for Bryony. Bryony on the other hand is fed up being restricted by her gender and her place in society, not being recognised for her brains, and not being able to own property etc.
The book can be read as a standalone, with previous characters appearing briefly. Bryony set up the dinner in the hope that it would show Gideon that her family were a little unconventional, but it only managed to make Gideon feel even worse about their prospects. Bryony's mother doesn't help the situation by being rude towards him on the one occasion that they meet.
I'm not entirely convinced as to why Gideon allows Bryony to keep coming back to the Cloven Hoof, once he finds her out, but the dynamic between the two people is excellent, and goes well in the wider series of the family
[Maxwell Gideon] "was trouble in every possible sense!"
Hoyden high society Miss and accounting genius meets unrepentant arrogant gambling den owner. Of course the sparks will fly!
When Maxwell Gideon ("tall, dark, and sinfully handsome") sought funds to start his exclusive club (aka gambling den) he little knew he was being financed by Miss Bryony Grenville, daughter of the ton who much preferred to don her brother's castoffs and reckon financial and economic matters, than attend soirées and Almanacks.
Now is the time for Maxwell to buy out his silent partner, but that process was meeting dead ends. All Maxwell had to do was find out his partner's name. That was proving harder than he thought. To top it all off he finds a young woman, disguised as a boy in his club after hours. That's when things became decidedly strange, at least for Maxwell. Bryony's in seventh heaven!
And then there's the annual Grenville family musicales!
Did I mention that Bryony's parents have turned on the screws and are demanding she marries before the end of the season--even if they have to choose the groom.
Imagine how an independent spirit takes that!
I must say I was in awe at how Bryony was able to sneak away. Definitely not a normal ability for most regency young women. And just how did she keep getting away with it--without coming to harm?
A pleasing regency romp down murky alleyways and through both respectable and not so respectable doorways.
A NetGalley ARC
I could not wait to read Max and Bryony's story and it did not disappoint. Max is handsome and rugged. Bryony could care less about her reputation and that is what makes them the perfect pair. I could not put this book down. It was steamy from the first and didn't disappoint.
Another great read from Erica Ridley. Intriguing characters and storyline. A regency romance with a difference. This author always comes up with a unique spin to her stories. Highly recommend it.
This story was so great. I loved the characters and the story. Bryony and Maxwell are great characters that you can't help but love and enjoy following their story. Byrony is such an interesting female lead character, I loved watching her win over Maxwell and how she handled everything. The plot is entertaining and fast paced, there are no slow parts, and the conflict is captivating, especially when he finds out she is his landlady and he sets out to get her to sell the deed to him. I enjoyed this one very much. I have not read anything by Erica Ridley before, but I definitely need to check her out more. Here characters are not typical Regency characters, especially her female characters, and that was refreshing.
Lord of Vice ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️by Erica Ridley
Max Gideon owner, or shall I say half owner of the gambling hell The Cloven Hoof, is desperate to buy out his silent partner if he knew the identity of that person.
Miss Bryony Grenville, one member of the famous musicale Grenville family, is considered to be a woman almost on the shelf. Her mother is very anxious to see her wed and fast.
Bryony with the help of her brother has become quite the wealthy financier and secret owner of the other half of the. Cloven Hoof.
Bryony when she confronts Max is clearly quite clever with financial matters. At first, Max wants her tossed out. Upon listening to her ideas he realizes her abilities. Bryony does not tell Max she is the half owner he seeks.
It is at this part, Ms Ridley weaves her story. Her characters each begin to develop and flow freely from the pages. I have read all of Ms Ridley’s series of Regency Rogues to only want more and more to read. I love her stories and her vivid descriptions of the people and the genre.
This is Maxwell Gideon and Bryony Grenville’s story, 6th in the Rogues to Riches series. This standalone, HEA love story is filled with humor, romance and sizzle.
This well written story depicts a beautifully developed love between the Lord of Vice, owner of a gaming hell, and an independent entrepreneurial woman who happens to be the daughter of a baron; I loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine, the humorous dialogue had me laughing and the storyline also made me cry. I look forward to more of this author.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
In the sixth book of Erica Ridley's Rogues to Riches series, we have the most entertaining story of Bryony Grenville. She's the youngest of the Grenville siblings, the charming hoyden who is always in some sort of mischief. In this story we learn that she has, quite secretly, invested in a notorious gaming hell known as the Cloven Hoof. Not only was she the key investor, but she's also the landlord for the property on which the den is located. But when it becomes apparent that the owner wants to purchase the property from the silent benefactor, Bryony is determined to figure out how he's coming up with the funds.
It's here that we meet Maxwell Gideon, owner of the Cloven Hoof... known throughout London as "The Lord of Vice", he is a force to be reckoned with. His establishment caters to both poor and rich alike, something completely unfounded during this time frame. This gaming hell has made him A LOT of money and he would like to be 100% owner. But can he get his slient partner to sell?
Erica Ridley has given us a most charming story! In fact I enjoyed this one more than "Lord of Pleasure" and let's face it, that one was... well... a pleasure! She's created the perfect hero, dark and brooding with a tragic backstory.... and a highly relatable heroine! You root for these two to beat the odds and end up with their happily ever after! Bravo!
This has to be my favourite book so far. I love the strength both characters have, Bryony is a head strong women with a business brain any man would love to have and Maxwell has the same strengths to match. They are both looking for the same thing, acceptance of who they are, not what others expect of them. This is one of the few books I have read in only two sittings, life gets in the road or I would have read it all at once. Ms Ridley has the writing know how to keep you hooked. There was a sex scene but this reviewer skipped it as usual and it did not affect my enjoyment of the book. This book can be read as a stand alone but it is nice to know the story behind the other characters in the book. If you are looking for a HEA story of two strong souls this is the book for you. I received this as an ARC.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
💋💋
This is my favourite from this series.
Bryony Grenville is the youngest member of the family and by far the most difficult and business savvy .
Max is The lord of Vice , he’s the owner ,creator of the Cloven Hoof a very particular gaming hell .
Bryony is a brilliant character she so interesting and intelligent, she has a great sense for making money and she just oozes charm to my mind . I love her forthright manner and her outspokenness.
Max is a self made man , and you can see where he gets his pride in what he’s achieved, I adore how he cares for Bryony wether he want to or not .
Emotions were all over the place reading this , for two such clever people you’d think they would be able to understand their feeling much sooner .
An awesome book that I will happily give 5 stars
I received an advance copy of this book and chose to submit a review
I am a big fan of Erica Ridley. I have read quite a few of her books so i know what to expect. This one did not disappoint. I was so happy to read a book with a leading lady like Bryony. She is unapologetically smart, successful, and unique. She is not like the leading ladies that typically appear in Regency novels . I liked her. Max, though, was pretty similar to the leading men who appear in such novels. He is strong, hard working, and the perfect match for the leading lady. I will be rereading this one in the future.
The sixth book in the Rogues to Riches series and It was a well-written book that kept my interest throughout I want the next book in the series. I received a copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it
Yes!! Another great book in series by Erica Ridley! She is an amazing storyteller! Love her books! Can not wait for her next book!
**Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC of this book.**
This was a fun, quick read. The premise was a simple one, but the characters were nice and fleshed out (for the most part). Max and Bryony’s relationship had room to grow from them being covert business partners to romantically involved. I haven’t read the books that precede this, but seeing the couples in this one, I want to.
One complaint I had was that Bryony’s mother was kind of the villain here, but she didn’t get a lot of time to be the spoiled, overbearing mother that Bryony kept saying she was. I would have like to have see more of that (I’m a sucker for overbearing mamas getting their comeuppance in the end).
Lord of Vice, Maxwell Gideon is part owner of the Cloven Hoof gambling club and he wants to find out who his silent partner is to buy him out. Little does he know his silent partner is a women, a respectable woman Miss Bryony Grenville. One night she decides to visit the club and what a night that changes both their lives forever. Bryony wants her freedom and refuse to let anyone dictate her life especially a silent partner. I love Max and Bryony as they banter with each and Max finds a woman of willpower and brains to match his own. He finds himself quite intrigued by her and you can just feel the sizzling chemistry that’s just palpable. This author doses an excellent job of bring these two characters out, as we watch them try to figure the each other out and fall in love along the way. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
I have to admit. I’m not big on the gaming hell book trend. It’s old and overdone by many authors, and when the subject arises I cringe. This book involves the owner of just such a business, but it somehow isn’t the total focus , even though it is central to the plot. The H is the owner of a gambling hell, the h is a secret investor and landlord to the hell. As all gaming Hells are owned by big, dark haired, muscular men, I shouldn’t have to tell you that’s what he is. The h is , of course, a Lady of some renown, a brilliant violinist, but also a genius with investments and mathematics. Sneaking into the hell one night she is busted in his office, wearing britches! Needless to say, they continue meeting, and though there can be no relationship betwixt them , one develops. The story is pure fluff, but sometimes I need pure fluff. A straightforward Love story, with just the right amount of angst, but no major danger or stupid plot manipulations. A story where two good people find love.
Great, smooth read. Nicely written and enjoyable. The main characters are sufficiently developed. The story flows along in a realistic manner, and the temperaments of the characters and their lives' desires fit in nicely. It is great the way other books in this series are briefly referenced. Definitely a novel worth reading more than once!
