Some beautiful and interesting home projects in this book. A modern twist on a traditional craft. This has inspired me to quilt again.
This beautifully photographed book will prove to be both inspiring and practical for modern quilters. Both beginners and long time quilters will find projects that appeal.
An interesting read, with good visuals and instructions on modern quilt patterns. If nothing else, it is fun to page through. Would recommend.
This is a gorgeous, colourful, and well presented book. Modern Patchwork Home is full of quilts that incorporate every colour of the rainbow in triangles, circles, squares, and so much more! From full fledged wall quilts to aprons or table runners these quilts are sure to bring a splash of colour into your home.
My personal favourite is coloured squares of different sizes, inside other squares on a white background. It really stands out and looks like putting it together is quite simple. Something I definitely need as my sewing machine skills are sub-par at best.
The experienced quilter might not feel like there is anything new here; but the intermediate to beginner sewer will find at least one pattern they want to work on.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
This book is a refreshing take on patchwork not often seen. Its modern and has great tutorials for the beginner who inspires to sew and quilt
I enjoyed this book. I have been searching for a hobby and this inspired me to try an easy project. The photos are lovely and the projects are useful. I wasn't as intimidated about trying a project after reading through this book.
These projects are so beautiful! It has given me so many ideas to work on for my home and my children, I will be busy for a long time!
I loved this modern take on quilting for your home! The beginning takes you through the basics of each sewing technique you will use throughout the book like flying geese, half square triangles curved pieces and Y seams. Each project has a materials list with easy to follow instructions as well as lots of pictures to help along the way. I was inspired by many of the colourful projects in this book and would definitely add this one to my library.
I really enjoyed this book. It gave a new twist to the more traditional designs. The instructions were clear and very easy to follow. As an experienced quilter I found it very useful as would quilters of all levels. I would certainly recommend it to my students.
quite interesting and really did inspire me to get back to being crafty and wanting to do a blanket. Just what pattern to start with and who it should be for!? I have read better books that have really inspired me but this is pretty good and also does inform you about patchwork and the skill
Modern Patchwork Home is a fantastic quilting/sewing book that has me wanting to improve my skills (starting with bringing my machine up from the basement and dusting off the cobwebs...). There are a ton of projects I would love to have displayed in my home, like quilts, table runners, totes, pillows and an apron. The Bloom Selvedge Pillow is just about the cutest project ever, using up all the words on selvedge edges of fabrics to create a flower at the center of a prettty pillow. I love the idea of this because it would be like a scrapbook of all the projects I have worked on in the past. I won’t be throwing out those selvedges ever again. This is a great book with lots of helpful tutorials and tons of fabulous projects. Highly recommended! I received an arc copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Modern Patchwork Quilting is a book for an experienced beginner or better quilter. The projects are decidedly modern in feel, which can be difficult patterns to find. The book features 24 projects, about half of which are quilts and half which are other types of projects for the home such as tote bags and table runners. There is even a yoga mat. Not sure that is a wise choice of time, however, it’s there if you want to go all natural yoga mat.
The book claims to be good for beginners, which I feel is misleading. This is not a book for beginner quilter, but for quilters who have some experience with piecing, cutting, knowledge of fabrics, tools, etc. , it could be overwhelming. For those with quilting experience, however, it would likely offer lots of inspiration.
There are some nice patterns, some which are confusing to me, an experienced quilter.
Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book features 24 projects, about half of which are quilts and half which are handmade projects for the home like table runners, canvas bags and even a beach yoga mat. The quilts are colorful and attractive with a decidedly modern feel (of course, given the name of the book). There are many illustrations and templates are offered in the back of the book. While the book claims to be good for beginners, as someone who has not ever quilted before I don't know that I would feel set to complete a full quilt after reading this book. For those with quilting experience, it should offer lots of inspiration.
While there were lots of quilts and projects, none of them particularly appealed to my own taste and there weren't any that I'd like to try to make for myself. There was one black and white geometric quilt that I did like, but it seemed especially advanced in terms of the stitching and far out of my league.
One of the things I like about quilting is the original intent of finding a use for bits of fabric and reusing garments. I would have liked to see at least a few projects in that spirit -- incorporating old baby clothes into a child's blanket, for instance, or creating a modern crazy quilt with various fabrics. These are along the lines of projects that you go and purchase the material, though, which I suppose is the modern way.
This would make a great book for a moderately experienced quilter who likes the look of modern designs and is looking for some new inspiration.

As a newly married adult shortly out of college, I didn't see the value in owning a sewing machine -- my short exposure through a sewing unit in junior high gave me basics but I left it at that. I was early in my knitting abilities when I started teaching English at a middle school. However, the teacher next door to me changed that. She was my age, also a knitter, and a huge resource to me as I taught. She became an informal mentor, able to give advice and answer any questions. I learned she was a quilter, but I imagined it as a fuddy-duddy activity, with dated-looking results.
Then one day, another teacher brought her quilt in to show off to my mentor, who had taught her. The colors were playful, the pattern modern. That day was when I envied that skill and vowed to acquire a sewing machine. I put it on my Christmas list, but my husband and I loved exchanging gifts way early, so by Thanksgiving I was already in possession of my new toy. After a lesson from my mentor, I was off. I made quilt samplers for everyone in my family the following Christmas, and my sisters have gotten various quilts from me for different big events (they are of varying quality, but my heart was in it).
When I saw the cover of Modern Patchwork Home: Dynamic Quilts and Projects for Every Room (edited by Vivika Hansen Denegre), I was delighted to get an advance copy. The quilt on the cover draws you in, and as I'd seen similar patterns but didn't know how they were constructed, I was ready to dig in.
The photographs are well staged, and the book is replete with colors and patterns that draw you in. I love the Braided Table Runner as well as the Reflected Wedges Runner. I can so easily see the Twisted Flower Tote filled with a current knitting project and my Kindle, as long as I make duplicates for my girls so they don't steal mine. The Sketchbook Cover caught my eye. And someday I'd love my make the Module Quilt or Urban Trek Quilt, and something about the Graphic Cross Quilt catches my eye.
While you see there are several projects I would love to make, the tips at the start are the exact education I need before beginning. I am too much a beginner to know some of the tricks of the trade, like how to make multiple blocks at a time; there are instructions for how to make half-square triangle blocks two at a time, even as many as eight at a time, with cheats on how to alter to your own needed size. I've watched friends work with paper piecing, but that was another elusive detail, now revealed.
Such a beautiful book with helpful tips and clear directions is bound to inspire others to visit fabric stores and sit down at their sewing machines again.

I loved this book. The modern take on quilts was a breath of fresh air. There were so many fun projects. Patterns I might want to try first are: the pencil holder, the yoga mat and Hot Cross Buns.
Very nice quilting book with various levels of patterns. I would like to thank everyone involved in this book for the free download and am anxious to sew up som patterns from this book. I find most of these unique and so will you. Thank you NetGalley for making it possible to download your books!!
Modern Patchwork Home has great inspiration and techniques. Beautiful pictures and clear directions.. as a crocheter and knitter it also gives ideas for your own afghans, blankets and throws. I recommend this to all crafters..
The problem with a craft which is largely based on traditional designs is that what results from your labours is also traditional, or - depending upon what light you shine on it - old-fashioned. Vivika DeNegre has curated a collection of patterns from today's top designers. As a word of warning, if you read Modern Patchwork Magazine you may well find that there's nothing new in the book, but if you're new to the magazine this could well prove to be a delightful collection from the back catalogue.
You get project instructions for more than twenty quilting projects: whether or not you consider them to be modern will be up to you. Personally I find table runners to be old-fashioned but it may well be that they're so old-fashioned that they're now in vogue. Quilts and cushions are timeless and unusual tote bags are very on message with the current move to eliminating plastic bags. There's even a yoga mat. The wall hangings show elegant use of colour (but this is constant throughout the book) and it did strike me that some would also make beautiful lap quilts. I did like the complete lack of twee little projects which many books seem to resort to to make up the numbers.
There are quite a few time-saving techniques included, along with tutorials to take you through each project step by step. Whilst not ideally suited to the complete beginner, just a little experience will mean that you can make the most of this book. I've been patchworking for half a century and quilting for decades, but I still found a great deal in the book which added to my knowledge.
On the Amazon page you'll find a 'look inside' feature and this will give you some excellent examples of the projects available. I'd like to thank the publishers for allowing me to see a proof of the book.
Pillows, table runners and beautiful quilts. Great descriptions, color, and instructions. Modern quilts can be very different than quilts from the past, this book shows how to update your old favorites.
While I haven't yet made the projects, I loved the range of options (pencil cup to quilts). The first chapter gives instructions on how to make the basic blocks (half square triangle to curves). As I was reading the ARC, not all the pictures came through, but in the actual book I think the pictures will be enough to help with the explanations of the instructions. I look forward to seeing this book with all of them.
I thank the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity for an eARC for an honest review.
