Modern Patchwork Home features contemporary quilts and projects. The projects and quilts feature fabrics that are current and on trend. Instructions for some of the quilt piecings are clear; however, I would prefer to see photographs and not illustrations.
This book is described as suitable for beginners, but I would recommend it for an experienced beginner or a more advanced quilter. The book was lacking instructions for finishing techniques. For example, the illustrations for sewing the binding were not very good. There were no instructions for quilting the finished product. A beginner would need to reference another book to learn more about binding and quilting.
This is an interesting looking book. The difficulty I'm having is the formatting for my Kindle is off. The steps are not in numerical order and the figures (ie. Fig 1) does not appear with the text, or at all. If I could figure out how to print this off, that might help. I have a feeling that the formatting would be incorrect though. There are a few patterns that look interesting, but I think locating a hard copy of the book is a must, in the event that the pattern is what you are looking for. Overall, the difficulty I'm having doesn't make me want to run out a purchase a copy, unless I can see it in person.
If you like modern quilt designs and are a skilled quilter, this book has some interesting patterns. As a beginning quilter, I found it to have patterns that were more complicated than I could handle. But, the instructions were detailed and nicely illustrated, making me want to try! There are all sorts of patterns, from aprons to totes to wall hangings, in addition to traditional quilts. But, I found it a bit too complex for my level of expertise.
A modern twist to an old handycraft that is relevant to days revival in up cycling. Our library has a number of books with examples of traditional patchwork quilts. This book is an excellent companion old and new melding well together just like favourite old clothes morphing into a newly loved items.
I have a lot of quilting book, some with modern aspects, but this one is one of the better ones. Very easy designs yet very eye catching, and fit in beautifully with any design - most of these are bright, but modern doesn't have to be bright, and these patterns can be adapted to any contemporary style and colour.
The book has other things apart from quilts, which is really nice - as one doesn't always want to make a quilt.
I really like this book, it will make a great addition to my library.

A modern and complete 101 class of Patchwork. The book contains useful tutorials and techniques. Also, the authors presented the teaching materials as a project with easy to follow tutorials accompanied with beautiful pictures and illustrations. I loved the Hexagone technique and the color combinations suggested in the book.
A beautifully put together easy to understand book. I loved the way it is laid out and every project is described in step to step detail with exact measurements and easy to follow instructions. There are some really lovely ideas and I will definitely be buying a few of these books for presents.
Inspiring!
This is a fresh look to patchworks and how to make breathtaking designs that will liven up a modern house.
Easy to follow instructions and detailed explanations on how to quilt and make featured designs.
What a fabulous surprise ... I was kindly offered an electronic pre-publication copy to review but, despite being an ardent quilter (and indeed owned a quilting shop in the UK for 8 years), I'm definitely a traditional old-fashioned gal when it comes to quilting so expected not to like this hugely. On the contrary, I will be buying a hard copy of this and using it - often!
There is a superb collection of 24 projects including accessories and gifts for all ages (including pencil holder, bags and totes, apron with pockets, book cover), runners and 'pillow' covers (cushion covers here in the UK) as well as 12 full-sized quilts to have as wall hangings or bed covers. It's great to have heaps of different designers too so that there's plenty of variation in style.
The book claims to be beginner-friendly, although I think just a little basic experience would be of help or at least a quilting friend along. The opening chapter summarises various techniques such as foundation piecing and making multiple half-square-triangle blocks amongst others, with excellent diagrams and instructions, along with great tips for both speed and accuracy. These are also scattered throughout the subsequent projects, some new to me, and the book is almost worth having for these alone. The projects include both hand and machine-pieced projects.
The designs themselves? Well, unashamedly modern of course, in both the overall design and the colours and fabrics chosen. That said, they vary enormously because of the richness of the varied authorship: some designers have used 'way-out' designs, whilst others have used traditional designs that are given a modern take with the use of vibrant and/or unusual colour combinations. This means they are entirely adaptable and could, if you wanted, be given a more traditional look if you so desired.
As a lover of antique quilts, I never thought I'd be ecstatic about a book on modern patchwork, but I'd highly recommend this to quilters of all persuasions. I will use some of their great tips and techniques, am most definitely inspired by some of the designs themselves even if I stick to my more 'antique' palette on the whole, but - surprise surprise for me - a couple of these are so striking in the designer's choice of fabrics I'm most definitely tempted to step out of my comfort zone to give them a go just as they are!
I have no hesitation, then, in highly recommending this book to lovers of patchwork and quilting - modern and traditional alike!
For someone newish to quilting like I am, this was a great book to read to understand some of the process. I found the explanations on how to approach the basic steps included to be helpful, and appreciated that they were included. The patterns themselves are cute, and I liked almost all of them. It's helpful to have smaller projects included since not every quilting project has to be a giant quilt. I may never make the pencil holder, but I liked having a smaller project that I could adapt myself that wouldn't take a month's worth of work. Some more interesting techniques like the braided table runner seemed easier to tackle than some more complicated patterns using the same techniques. This is definitely worth a look for both the new and experienced quilter.
Modern Patchwork Home by Vivika Hansen Denegre was just the book I've been looking for.
I've have been wanting to try patchwork for quite a while and this book is full of small projects for me to try with easy instructions for a beginner.
I really love the cushions and bags and I will be visiting a fabric shop to buy the materials I need.
I would like to thank NetGalley and F+W Media for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
The projects are beautiful and inspirational. The colors are so cheerful and make for good eye candy. Anyone wanting to make the projects should have a basic to intermediate knowledge of sewing and quilting since the instructions aren't always accompanied by good photos.
I love the idea of quilting more than the actual making of large quilted projects. This book is a perfect fit for me! There are so many great, small projects for makers to sew without getting into a long-term project. I love a project that can be started and finished in a day or maybe over a weekend. I can realistically see myself making quite a few of these projects! There are table runners, bags, pencil holder covers (so cute!), pillow covers and more. For those looking for a larger project, there are a number of beautiful quilts too.
The book begins with a section on quilting basics and time saving tips. We learn how to create the various blocks as well as get a lesson on paper piecing, curved piecing and doing bindings. Each design is clearly explained and includes multiple photos. This is a lovely collection of quilted projects with a modern twist.
Thank you to NetGalley and F+W Media/The Quilting Company for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book! All comments are my own, unbiased opinion.
What a lovely book to look through.
Very much in the style of the Modern Patchwork Magazine.
Lovely new patterns from top Modern designers. Patters include anything from quilts, cushions, table runners and many accessories that can be customised to any décor. There is also a couple of useful bags and even a yoga mat. There are over 20 modern projects, that are sure to inspire any crafter.
The patterns will suit any style really, but definitely in the real "modern fashion" that is so popular with today's younger Quilter/Crafter. Definitely a recommended purchase.
Modern Patchwork Home is a solid collection of patterns with some really gorgeous designs. I love the updated versions of some old classic patterns, and the examples of vibrant colours used within are just stunning.
The book opens with a great section on techniques (paper piecing, curved piecing, binding) as well as some quick and easy methods for churning out some of the basic quilt blocks like half-square triangles or flying geese. There is a nice selection of projects, from small totes and pillows up to full quilts.
Many of the designs require a strong familiarity with sewing techniques, so I would recommend this to those with intermediate to advanced-level skills.
Thank you to NetGalley and F+W Media for providing me with a DRC of this book.
A beautifully illustrated book full of inspiring projects. It offers a modern twist on traditional quilting, and the projects are so versatile they you could easily adapt them to suit your own tastes and ideas. The instructions are very clear and could be followed by a beginner. Thank you
An excellent collection of modern quilt projects, both small and large, that capture the modern look of quilting. The detailed instructions will help even beginners get great results.
This book is beautifully designed with some truly unique and modern twists on traditional quilts. I will be gifting this to several people & encouraging its purchase for the library.
