Probably one of my favourite books of the year. Could not put it down! First book I’ve read by the author but look forward to reading more. Would highly recommend this to anyone thanks for the preview!
This was the first book I have read by Kate Helm and I wasn't disappointed. The story starts with the events which have affected Georgia's life 20 odd years ago. Then brings you right up to date, with her job as a court artist and her fairly isolated life. You become very drawn to her character and as the plot evolves you really care what happens to her. Really well written and good plot - really gets you thinking. A really great read - you won't be disappointed. Thanks to NetGalley for my free copy.
Wow, what a book! This is a total page turner, the plot is unique and the twists and turns unexpected. A definite stand out book of the year and one that is strongly recommend.
This is an excellent, clever story with much to keep the reader interested, including learning about a rare illness. I did not see the twist at the end coming. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I would definitely read more of this author.
It took me a little while to get into this book and get a feel for the characters but when I did I was hooked. The book has two plots one around Georgina’s work and one around her history which does not want to stay in the past. And her personal life. How will Georgina cope when both her professional and personal life are ynder presssure. Very original storeyline and thoroughly enjoyable
A book I struggled to put down if this Kate Helms debut thriller bring on the next
I loved the twists and turns “ are there ghosts” or is it real . The main character Georgia was totally believable as the court room artist who felt she could show people as guilty but was her previous history contributing to her feelings about the other characters obviously all is revealed in the end,
As a great fan of psychological thrillers I normally guess who's the murderer in the end but this book had me really thinking about it
Please hurry up with Book 2 Kate
Georgia has it all: she's a brilliant court artist, a flat in a really nice part of Brighton, friends who care about her and a commission to paint a picture for the cover of ground-breaking book. But she also is worried that the little boy she keeps seeing means she's going mad.
The portrait draws Georgia back into her first ever case- one that, at the time felt cut and dried and straightforward, a clear case of heroes and villains- and makes her question everything she ever thought she knew about evil. It also makes her revisit her own traumatic past and who she once was. Unfortunately, this also makes her vulnerable.
I thought that this was a really interesting idea for a psychological thriller- very often we see things through the eyes either of the victim or someone in a more conventional role within the criminal justice system. Georgia is neither of these in a traditional sense, so it goes to show that there are some new perspectives in a genre that can feel a little re-hashed.
There are genuinely surprising moments, although there are also sections that feel a bit rushed. However, I have no doubt that die hard fans of the genre will devour this novel in no time at all.
This book has you gripped from the start. It also features a different angle I have not read before - a court artist. I like books that you can't guess what is going to happen from the very beginning, this keeps you interested from the start to the very end and this is certainly one of those. The ending was totally unexpected and the book finished as it started.. Strongly.
I was given a copy of The secrets you hide by Bonner advanced reader in return for an honest review.
The story grabbed me from the first page, a young girl locked in her bedroom hears disturbing sounds. fast track to the present day to courtroom artist Georgia Sage who is sure she can see who is guilty and influence the public and the Jury with her drawings. Georgia has secrets she has kept hidden even from her closest friends, but her world is unravelling Georgia must face her demons. I really enjoyed this book the story was so original with twists and turns I didn't see coming and a tense ending. Cant wait for more thrillers from Kate Helm
I really enjoyed this. It had such an interesting premise – Georgia is a court artist who can see evil in the people she paints, and she herself has a secret of her own, which slowly gets revealed as she revisits an old court case.
Georgia made a pretty good main character. She’s an independent, successful woman who is top of her game, she has a female rival in her career but it mostly remains civil, with only the occasional moment of bitchiness. It’s enough to keep it real but thankfully avoids turning into anything else. The supporting characters have mostly faded into the background, but they all felt necessary at the time, adding depth to the story and helping Georgia along the way.
I loved waiting for the big reveal. It kept me on my toes the whole time, as I thought I’d guessed what had happened and then something would happen and it’d be left wondering if I’d got it wrong. I went through multiple theories over the course of the book, and yet I still hadn’t guessed the full reveal! It just goes to show how clever Helm’s writing it. I love being surprised by a book and this didn’t disappoint.
Pick this up. It’s well worth a read!
Firstly thank you very much to NetGalley for the ARC, very much appreciated.
The tale is of Georgia Sage who is a courtroom artist, with a dark secret in her past. Like most of us, she feels that she can detect if a person is good or bad from a first sighting and how it could affect her courtroom art. After a contact to do artwork for a book, she revisits her first courtroom case - a case, that made a big impact on her.
I really enjoyed this book. It is so different from any courtroom or detective story I have read before and there have been a lot. It moves along at a good pace, there are no cliches in this book, only a very well written tale, with twists, false leads and an ending that I really didn't see coming.
I think think that this could be a series or a couple of follow up novels.
How often do we look at someone and immediately decide whether we like them or not? How often are we wrong and does our initial idea of someone change? What if you’re a court artist, like Georgia Sage? She thinks she has a firm grasp on people’s faces and can spot evil in a flash. After all, she’s been drawing them for years and she knows what to look out for. With a few simple brush strokes, she can get her opinion of a suspect at a trial across to a tv audience as well. But what if she’s wrong?
Drawn back to one of the first court cases Georgia attended, she may need to face up to the fact she possibly helped the guilty party go free. While searching for the truth and hopefully seeing justice served, Georgia finds herself confronted with her own dark past. A chilling event from her childhood has haunted her ever since but the truth is even more devastating. As Georgia will soon discover for herself.
This compelling story has a lot to offer. Not only is there the wonderful setting in Brighton but there’s a murder to solve and for once, there’s not a detective in sight. There’s just Georgia, a normal young woman, albeit it a tad damaged. While the pace was maybe somewhat on the slow side at the beginning, I found myself utterly engrossed, wondering what was going on. But then!
I’m not a fan of this whole “twist you won’t see coming” thing but guess what?! There was a twist I didn’t see coming! It changed the entire storyline, tilting it right onto its head, making me sit up just that little bit straighter. All of a sudden, an “average” crime thriller turned into something highly original and unusual and I absolutely loved it!
With a unique premise and an exciting first chapter, this had me utterly gripped. A slow burner, yes, but packed full of emotion and intriguing characters. The Secrets You Hide is well-plotted, brilliantly written, addictive and hugely satisfying. If you enjoy your crime thrillers and you’re looking for something that’s a little bit different, look no more! I’m incredibly excited to find out what Kate Helm comes up with next.
The Secrets You Hide was a emotional roller-coaster of a thriller that I actually ended up reading in about 2 sittings there was just something so compelling about the main character that I couldn’t put this down, while it is a slow burn novel the emotional impact this book has just drives the story on.
I absolutely loved Georgia she was just such a fantastic character who I just rooted for so much, I felt so much sympathy for her. I don’t think I’ve liked a main thriller character this much for a while the more you discover about her the more you route for her. I really just wanted her to be okay she’s suffering from so much pain and guilt and it was heartbreaking to read.
This is just such a cleverly written novel while it’s no your typical twisty thriller it definitely leaves you wondering who the villain of the piece is, I swear one minute I thought I knew then the next it had all turned on its head. This is definitely a knockout of a thriller, with plenty emotional and gripping moments to keep you hooked and desperate for more. I cannot wait for more to come from Kate Helm.
Thank you so much to the publishers for the review copy via Netgalley.
I was very excited to receive an advance copy of “The secrets you hide”. I have read and enjoyed previous novels by the author under her previous guise of Kate Harrison, so thank you to Bonnier Zaffre for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
The story centres around Georgia Sage, a court artist who has experienced trauma in her early life, which is explained as the story progresses. The premise is original and certainly kept me hooked, I would definitely recommend this and I’m looking forward to the next!
I struggled a little with this one. The writing was very good, it flowed well and the authors knowledge and research definitely came across, and I also loved that Georgia was a Court Artist, something I don't think I've ever encountered in a novel before, but I just couldn't gel with her for some reason - she seemed to just irritate me, which unfortunately did put a little dampener on my enjoyment of the story. All in all though, the thriller and drama content of the story was certainly a page turner.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the ARC.
This was such a great read! For once a description of 'emotional thriller' is so true.
This book is cleverly centred on Charlie, a talented Courtroom Artist who portrays people's innocence or guilt through her sketches, but mostly believes she can 'see' evil. Her background gradually filters through to her present situations and relationships as she becomes embroiled in a new project involving a past criminal case. (Enough said or I'd be revealing too much).
Initially I found the writing style, together with how some characters were introduced, a little hard to get to grips with, having to return to previous chapters to clarify a person/situation, but once sorted, the story - or stories - flowed together very well. There are lots and lots of little twists and turns; just when you think you've worked something out another shoe is dropped from a completely different foot!
Throughout, though, the writing really draws you into Charlie's world - her thoughts and feelings really got to me; not many books can do that.
I really enjoyed this novel by Kate Helm. The main character is Georgia Sage, a court artist who believes that she can see evil in the defendants in the courts where she works.
The idea of using a court artist to tell the story is an original one. In some ways they seem to be anachronistic, but it is still the case that no cameras are allowed in court. The artist has to sit through the trial making notes, but she cannot draw anything until the court rises. She is in a unique position; she knows the main players (the judge, the barristers) but, like the jury, she doesn't know what is supposed to have happened until it is presented in court. The way she draws the victim and the accused might sway public opinion.
The author gives us glimpses of Georgia's private life and history as the case of a footballer plays out in front of us. We also get parts of past cases interwoven into the plot. I had no idea how the story would unfold, and I am pleased to say that I did not guess what would happen in the end.
I will be looking out for more books from Kate Helm. This story had me hooked to the very end. #thesecretsyouhide#netgalley
Now listen. I can always guess what’s going to happen in a novel. Not this time!! I absolutely loved this book. I liked all of the characters right from the start and would have enjoyed it just as a straighforward mystery - but the twists made it all the more memorable for me. I’m still thinking about it now, and that’s rare as I usually just move on to the next book. Superb.
Thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for an advanced electronic copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! What a page turner. Wasn't really sure what to expect, I must say the book flows really well. The story evolves around Georgia, who at first seemed stand offish and isolated until you learnt about her secrets, I'm glad we knew her background early on as it explained why she was so intent on getting to the truth. Liked the fact that you wasn't preached to regarding medical information, explained very clearly. Thoroughly enjoyed the read and well worth anyone picking it up if you like a mystery thriller. Will definitely read more from this author.
I loved this book, everything about it ticked all the boxes for me. I loved the style of writing, the author really grabbed my attention from the first pages. I haven't read any other books by this writer but will definitely read more by her in this genre.
