It's always nice to read a mystery with an, ahem. mature protagonist. Gina's life should be perfect but there are issues all around the edges and her old partner has turned up asking for help. This has multiple threads (perhaps too many) and at times you'll wonder how it all links up. Regardless. it's a good read.
This thriller introduced me to a new author that I will make part of my never ending reading pile. This was a very well written book, gripping and thrilling until the very end. Recommended.
A Gina Grey tale.
This was my first Gina Grey tale by Penny Freedman, which sadly didn’t hold my attention at times. I felt that the author tried maybe too hard by linking too many strands together.
We are introduced to Gina who has moved from the coast to Bloomsbury and her connection with David, a previous partner and detective. David is involved in a murder investigation and asks for Gina’s help without divulging all the details.
Too many of Gina's family are involved in antics of their own, so adding other layers to the book, but somehow it lacked cohesion for me. We have Freda, the granddaughter involved in her own plot, plus daughter and son-in-law, and the importance of a Shakespeare play added to the murder in the vicinity.
I think that ‘Little Honour’ will appeal to lovers of the thriller genre, as Gina is a feisty lady which I certainly liked and she makes a great amateur sleuth.
Galadriel.

Thankyou to NetGalley, Troubador Publishing, Matador and the author, Penny Freedman, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Little Honour in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion.
I was excited by the premise of the book. Unfortunately, it was not what I expected. I struggled to finish as, to me, the plot was very slow and I could not connect with any of the characters. Was not a book for me.
I just couldn’t get into this book. I found the plot was slow. Perhaps this was just me. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my digital arc this is my unbiased review.
Good premise and enjoyable storyline. Slightly confused with the play excerpts at the ending of the novel.
All in all, I enjoyed this book. There were a few parts for me that did not hold my interest as much - such as the extensive scenes involving Gina's job, and the Shakespeare portions. I do understand how these things tied into the story, they just weren't very interesting to me personally and I had to skim over them. I did not realize this book was one of a series, and I did like the main character, and really loved precocious Freda. I may check out more of the books in the series. A fun, well-written read. Thanks for the ARC!
Gina is moving into a new flat and has more room for visiting family members now. Her youngest daughter is in a Shakespeare play and wants her to watch rehearsals. Her older daughter's four year old son has to have heart surgery for a hole in his heart. And her old boyfriend is back in her life again.
Troubador Publishing Limited and Net Galley allowed me to read this book for review (thank you). It will be published October 28th.
Gina is a strong-willed stubborn women. David, her old boyfriend, has the same traits. That's why they broke up. But now he's back and asking her to help him with an investigation. Of course, he doesn't want to tell her anything about the case. How can she ask questions if she doesn't know what to ask?
In the meantime, she meets a good looking man at the play rehearsals and she's attracted to him. He seems to be attracted to her, too. When he and David meet up, they're both decent and pleasant but she's hoping he will make David jealous.
The boy has surgery, his sister is trying to recover a lost dog, and Gina is trying to solve a murder case. It all gets resolved before the end but parts of it will surprise you. Nothing is easy in this story.
Thank you NetGalley and Matador for the eARC.
An excellent book and my first in the Gina Gray series.
Gina has moved from the seashore to Bloomsbury to her new flat and is tremendously busy. Not just with work, but also settling in her new home while her daughter and son-in-law are staying with her as their little boy is undergoing a heart operation in a nearby hospital. Freda, Gina's 10-year old granddaughter, is staying with her grandfather (Gina's ex) and his wife and two little sons.
A young woman was murdered quite near Gina's new flat and DCI David Scott, in her life once more, wants her help in solving the case, but gives her very few clues, frustrating her. She berates him of course, being the no-nonsense, speak her mind character she is.
Freda has a case to solve as well...who stole the puppy from her grandfather's home? Besides that, she's eaten up with worry about her little brother's operation. If she can find Jasper, the puppy, she believes all will be well with her brother and life will go back to normal.
I liked Gina a lot, her musings and actions made me smile, she's a feisty one. The chapters devoted to Freda were excellent, so sweet, I hope the next books will feature her again, so we can see what kind of woman she will turn into; I have high hopes for her, she's smart, loving and kind with Gina's feisty attitude.
This was such a good read, it has everything: likeable (and a few not so likeable) characters, clever writing, a highly enjoyable story, no unnecessary violence and a happy ending. What's not to love?
