Flora is now in her forties and recently divorced. She's considering getting back on the horse again and begin dating. So she does the whole online thing to various results. This felt really superficial with little new to say. It's like half the bad rom-coms out there. The art's nice but the story is trite.

A beautiful graphic memoir that is informative and necessary for all people to be aware of. I highly recommend this title.

Yeah, sorry but I can't get behind this one, because I can't STAND women who NEED a man to be happy. Also, her son is a total little shit and she's referring to him as "a little angel?" Gag. Nothing appealing about jealous, insecure women who are threatened by other women or who hang out with "girlfriends" who so nothing but cut them and every other woman around them down.

I loved the illustrations but in the end this was quite a forgettable read.

Flora is 40, recently divorced, and feeling lonely so her friend encourages her to try online dating. She has a few dates but nothing really seems to stick.

Sure I can understand the loneliness but what I don’t quite get is why her friends seem to enjoy bringing each other down. How can they be friends like that? They seem quite shallow too.

I did find her friendship with her elderly neighbor quite sweet.

But ultimately I didn’t like the way it all ended. And so this was quite a disappointing read.

Calif. ★★★ y 1/2

XOXO Karly.

Bleh. This whole graphic novel is commentary on women's social lives. Trying to find a guy when you're already "past your prime" aka not under 30, while trying not to compromise your standards, friends that aren't friends, and women tearing each other down in whispers. Also don't forget the trope that if you don't have a guy in your life you're going to die sad and alone with only a cat for company and you'll be miserable.

This was a tiresome book with decent illustration. Maybe this was meant for an older generation than I am because none of this lines up with my worldview. If I had such awful friends I would drop them. I don't think there is any problem with being by yourself if that's what makes you happy, and I believe that women have value as a person and not just a sexual object. Don't forget the strange instance of these men leaving her and she does not try communicating with them to see what the issue was.

I didn't like this comic, don't know why particularly, but it wasn't for me.
Maybe because it was an ePub version, but yeah.
The drawings were beautiful though, and I absolutely love the cover, and the colors.

This illustrated book is about Flora, a middle aged divorcee with a son. She is a freelancer with just enough work and a non existent love life. The book takes us through the journey of her looking for love, and maybe finding it?
The illustrations are interesting with an average storyline. The characters are fun to read about but the book has a predictable end. It had moments that one could relate to, and the book displays a wonderful set of friends, each different and special in their own way.
A quick and easy read, this book was a nice break from the other books that I was reading simultaneously! Overall, it isn't a book that's amazing in any way, but was fun to read nevertheless!

Flora, a quaint, imaginative beauty, is frugal and holding on tightly to the quality of life that she can afford after a messy divorce. Urged by her many friends, they suggest online dating, having fun, and staying busy to stave off loneliness. The art style is very attractive with its mod, wide-eyed sketching and ringed pops of pastel colour.

I think this would be a good gateway graphic novel for older readers..

Thank you, NetGalley for the preview of this graphic novel.

Flora and the Shooting Star is about a woman who looks for love after her ex-husband cheats on her. While the illustration style was very beautiful and the palette so breath-taking, the story didn't pull my as much the art did.

This was an enjoyable book. The illustrations are gorgeous. Some parts had me smile or laugh. If it was a novel, it would be a good novel based on a woman’s life with friendship and dating. However I did not like how or the way it ended. Also, I did not like the way the friends were bringing each other down. I understood what Chantel was trying to convey but others who read this may see it differently on the ending. I’d give it a high 3 1/2 stars! I received this ARC from Net Galley based on my honest review.

'Flora and the Shooting Stars' by Chantal Van den Heuvel is about a 40 year old woman and her search for love.

Flora is recently divorced and thinking about dating again. She has a lot of conversations about it with her friends, and herself. She does date a couple men and the results are varied. The other women in her life are kind of negative about her chances, but Flora seems to be determined.

And that's about all that happens. The art is nice enough, but there isn't much of a story arc at all. I kept reading thinking "And?", but that never got resolved for me. I think if I'd expected more of a monologue about modern dating in mid-life, I might have had different expectations.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Europe Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Romantic, attractively illustrated, and polished, Flora and the Shooting Star is a delightful story that brims with life. These characters are developed and believable, and the art is satisfying.

This book is populated by catty women who are supposedly friends but seem only to want to be better than one another. The art is fine, but nothing groundbreaking, and I can't say I liked any of the characters, save the man the main character ends up with. We only see him for a few pages, so perhaps that's why?

I'm not sure if this was better in the original French or if I'm supposed to enjoy reading about women who make fun of each other for having botox, for not having botox, for being older, for being younger, for wanting to date, for wanting to be alone... There's even a young woman visiting who is portrayed as "dangerous" because she's attractive and the older women are threatened by her.

The whole book is proof that women can and do write misogynistic things, intentionally or not.

I don't recommend it.

A story of scorn. While a woman is trying to deal with her own life events, she is beautifully drawn through situation that lead us to believe there is more to her recent bout of misfortune.

Filled with simple yet gorgeous artwork, this short graphic novel was easy to fly through in one sitting. I devoured the artwork, and loved every single frame of this monochromatic graphic novel. However, I felt a lack of excitement over the story line. Following Flora on her endless disappointments while she tackled the terrifying reality of online dating. Simple, fun, and realistic, yet lacking the depth that I was hoping for....

I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

There was a Peanuts strip, where Linus begged Lucy to read him a story. Her story was as follows:

There once was a man. He lived and he died. The End.
, to which Linus muses, “What an amazing fellow. Almost makes you feel as though you knew him.”

I bring this up because although this is a pleasant enough story, and very nice art, the story is as light weight as the story above.

Flora wants a man. She tries dating online. She ends up with the man of her dreams, the end.

And with most roncomes, there is a misunderstanding of some kinds that pushes them apart. But once she realizes that she is being misunderstood, they get back together again, the end.

As Gertrude Stein said about Oakland, there is no there there. The characters were one dimensional, although athe author kept trying to flesh them out. And I did;t really care about any of them.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

An interesting graphic novel. Compelling characters and a decent story line. It has an alright art style.

I really liked the style of the illustrations of this book, which I think complimented the story well. The friendships between the women were quite true to life in that they were supportive of each other, but sometimes a bit negative too. The hit and miss nature of using online dating apps was funny. I liked Flora’s friendship with Venerable and the idea that wishes made on a shooting star do come true!
