I am afraid this one wasn’t for me. I found it meandered too much and had a pantomime atmosphere. The ending just left me incredulous.
Took me a while to get into this book but then I really enjoyed it..
Did Alicia kill her husband or did someone else . This had a lot of twists and turns in it and I enjoy a good thriller
Read it you wont be disappointed
Alicia Berenson is locked away in a secure unit following the murder of her husband. She has been mute since she committed the crime. Theo is a forensic pschologist who wants to be the person to unlock Alicia and understand why she did what she did and to make her talk again. The suspense builds up to a fantastic ending which I just hadn’t seen coming.
I really loved this book. I was enjoying the book as a general read and then came the rather explosive ending – don’t worry, no spoilers. I then had to spend some time thinking about the book again & look at the story from an entirely different perspective. This reminded me of “Shutter Island” by Dennis Lehane in which the ending twisted the whole book on its head.
This was a very well written book. The bulk of the book is seen from Theo’s point of view. However we are also privy to Alicia’s diaries from before the murder and then later. I enjoy books which provide alternative narrative styles such as diaries, letters or old documents. It enables the reader to see things from an additional point of view. In this case we were able to get inside the head of the silent Alicia.
I really enjoyed this book. It is clever and made me re-think what I had read. I will certainly be on the lookout for other books by this author.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley.
I have seen a lot of talk about this recently so was intrigued to see whether it lived up to the hype. I would say I love maybe the first 80% of the book, atmospheric, interesting, everything you want from a book like this. The last few chapters didn’t tie the book together for me and I wasn’t convinced on it. Overall a really good book and still worth reading!
Beautifully written, fantastic characters, and a storyline that had me desperately trying to work out the truth. Gripping from the first page, I couldn't put this down.
This is an excellent debut! Alex Michaelides is a fine writer and this thriller is intriguing and engrossing from the start. The dramatis personae comprises artists and photographers, doctors and psychotherapists, all richly drawn and crucial to the unravelling of a mysterious murder. I was gripped from start to finish.
Ohh don’t you just love it when a book has everything that you want in a really great psychological thriller, I was apprehensive when I started the book as it had had a lot of hype and I just hoped that I wasn’t going to be disappointed....well that certainly didn’t happen the book lived up to all expectations and more. The story is exceptionally well written and very, very clever, the characters are all believable (if you can believe anything in this book) making it a compulsive, compelling read and what an ending I thought I had it worked out but no no no I just didn’t see that coming at all !!!! It’s such a satisfying feeling when you really love a book and this just fits the bill so I can well recommend it so please give it go it’s going to be a big hit so don’t miss out.
My thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Wow. The twist at the end of this book is brilliant. This book had me pulled in from the first page. The characters are so interesting I wanted to know more and more about them. Everything is really well written. I read this in one sitting. I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Aha! A very good reveal at the end. A sort-of Christie-esque sleight of hand I greatly admire.
If you like this genre, you will definitely like this book. Film rights optioned by Plan B (The Departed, Twelve Years A Slave).
Out in the UK in February.
THE SILENT PATIENT pulled me in right away with its immediately intriguing characters and a strong sense of a chilling mystery. The plot is twisty and told in two timeframes; the present day and the past, via Alicia’s diary entries. Alicia and Theo’s characters are well-developed and there’s a constant sense of unreliable narration which keeps the reader tense and suspicious.
This book kept me reading until way past my bedtime … recommended!
WOW...
This is a fantastic thriller and even better psychological read, it is heavily laced with psychological treatments and therapy. The plot is fab with twist and turns and I didnt see the ending coming. Alicia in sent to a secure unit after shooting her husband at point blank. Forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber is fascinated by her and why since the shooting Alicia has remained silent. The paced flowed nicely while Theo delves into her life by talking to people know her best however the real Alicia lives within her memories and her hidden diary.
Having studied psychology this book really gripped me and I found I was drawn into the main characters life with ease. Every page stood out for me and I was dying to ask my own questions to Alicia and Theo.
Well, what can I say about this book other than it's mind blowing!
More twists than a tornado, and it will keep you guessing all the way through, I finished this in a matter of hours and am now lost as to what book can follow it!
I've never heard of Alex Michaelides before, but I will certainly be keeping an eye out for more books by him in the future.
Silent, but the truth comes out, doesn't it?
Alex Michaelides, The Silent Patient, is one of those books that you really don't want to put down until you know the outcome. And what an outcome it has.
Why did Alicia shoot her husband point-blank in the face and then try and kill herself? Theo, a therapist has made it his mission to get to the bottom of this but first he must get Alicia to speak. Can he help save her from herself, all the while trying to save his own relationship.
This book has an incredible hook and grabbed my attention straight away. An intriguing plot and characters kept me going all the way to the end, with it’s enjoyable plot twists.
After reading the blurb and some reviews I just had to read this book. Unfortunately for me it did not live up to the hype. It plodded along and never really grabbed my attention. If I hadn't been given a copy to review I don't think I would have finished it.
It did have a twist at the end but it didn't redeem the book for me.
Others seem to love it so it's obviously just not my type of book.
Thank you Orion and NetGalley for my ARC.
Wow, I really didn’t see that twist coming...I gobbled this up in a couple of days whilst away from home.
Highly recommended thriller, which I can see being sidelined for TV. Well written, intriguing, and full of suspense. Lots of possibilities thrown the readers way, some obvious, some not, but I pretty much guarantee you won’t guess the ending. This book will grab you from the first chapter. An easy five stars and well worth the hype.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC copy.
Great storyline, I loved the characters and they really drew me into their lives. I was enjoying the flow and speed of this story. Then all of a sudden, the twist hit me, I think to myself..really, did i just read that, why didn't I see this coming? Great twist leading to another twists, brilliant ending.
The description of this book sounded very good but I just couldn't get into it. Reading the other reviews it would seem that I am in the minority. Just not my kind of book
I was totally intrigued by the blurb of this debut novel and the promise of ‘This is the only thriller you need to read in 2019.’ Then I saw the catalogue of well respected thriller writer’s quotations, which included high praise and hearty recommendations with descriptions such as ‘brilliant, ‘sophisticated’ and ‘impossible to put down’ underlining the mastery of the psychological thriller and its originality. There was nothing else to do - I just had to request this novel for review. I always love the thought that this is someone’s fledgling introduction to a totally different phase of their lives. I wasn’t at all disappointed – in fact everything I had read was truly accurate and this novel was very obviously written by a very talented author who will surely make his name with this novel.
It had everything going for it. The story was strong, the characters were believable and carefully developed and the writing was superb. The two main characters were easy to like and the stories were interesting and thought provoking. The suspense never once let up and the ending was absolutely jaw-droppingly shocking. There is Alicia, the patient, a promising but troubled artist with a disturbing and haunting past. She is married to Gabriel and he is her rock. She keeps a journal of her activities and thoughts – her way of proving to him that she is coping despite her challenges. Then one day she takes his gun out of the cupboard and shoots him dead. She has never uttered another word since that fateful evening.
Then there is Theo, also happily married and just starting his new job as a forensic psychotherapist in the secure unit that is Alicia’s home for all the years since she fired the five shots at point blank range that killed her husband. Theo is desperate to help release Alicia from her elective mutism and succeed where other therapists have failed. He is totally obsessed with the story, especially so as he gathers more information about her life. He can sense that there is more to be revealed. She may even be totally innocent. Each session becomes more intense until during one session Alicia insists that Theo takes her old journal. She pushes it into his hands eagerly. He takes it away with him and begins to read an untold story. This novel relates that incredible story. It’s dynamite.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from publisher Orion through my membership of NetGalley. Thank you for my copy sent in return for an honest and unbiased review. This novel is an excellent, absorbing read, intelligently written, pacey and a real page turner. It gripped me from the very beginning until the shocking ending. I love novels with unreliable narrators so this was right up my street. I’ve thought long and hard about my review. I did have some issues with the timeline and that’s why it is a very well deserved 4* from me.
I have read a lot of psychological thrillers, and so was very much looking forward to reading this book which has had much publicity and has been put alongside other thrillers I have enjoyed such as AJ Flynn's Woman in the window.
Alicia Berenson was accused of and found guilty of murdering her husband, but for the last six years and holed up in a mental care facility called 'The Grove,' has refused to speak. Enter Theo Faber, a psychotherapist and flawed individual who decides to transfer over to The Grove, because he is intrigued with Alicia;s case. He is determined to unravel the reasons why Alicia murdered her husband. The story is told from Theo's POV and also form Alicia's diary extracts leading up to the murder which makes for interesting reading.
If like me, you enjoyed The Woman In The Window, you will enjoy this too. It is a well written, compulsive, slow burning build up to a really explosive and surprisingly unexpected ending. Structurally, it has all the right components: well researched, engaging and twisty psychological thriller.
Michaelides is a talented writer with a unique voice, and his writing is so compelling it keeps you gripped to the very end. It is billed as a page turner and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Through his narrative, the author raises interesting themes such as mental health care, the complexity of marriages and relationships and although he doesn't deal with them in a unique way, his narrative propels the plot forward and raises the issues in an effective and thought provoking way.
I would recommend.
