This book is like a big cuddle, slower in pace that I'm used to and that caused me to be unsettled but the story is absolutely delightful, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely read something by this author again.
Mr Doubler is a potato farmer, of a certain age. A loner and you can tell completely depressed. That is, until his good friend and cleaner is taken ill.
You never realise what you have or your worth, this story goes into that and with beautiful results.
Sorry this book was not for me i did try and i did finish it but no thanks
Thank you Netgalley for a copy for a Honest review

Unfortunately this book was not for me, it was a bit slower than I would like and it just didn't hold my attention. I am sure other people will love it!
Thank you to the publisher for my eARC copy of this book. Unfortunately I didn’t love this book and therefore didn’t finish, I just didn’t connect with this one. Not for me, sorry.
A witty, heart warming read. The characters in this book are so well developed that they feel like they are your very own friends by the end.
I really enjoyed this book and would read more from this author. May have been first but won't he the last.
A recluse, slightly rude and not without his share of heartbreak, Mr Doubler begins again can be forgiven for starting a little slow. However it was endearing, sad, joyful, hopeful, lovely, funny and thought provoking at different times. Worth sticking at during the slow bits.
The task of repopulating the senior library has been an exciting and daunting task aS in a boarding school our aim is to encourage all members of the community to read. Because of this, I have been searching down a wide and diverse range of books to read that will entice a wide cross-section of the school to come in, browse and find books that they love.
Books like this will ensure that the senior students in the school see the library as a diverse, modern and exciting place with books that speak to them and they want to recommend to their friends, classmates, teachers and tutors.
It is an engrossing and exciting read with fully-formed characters and a plot that ensures that it's hard to look away. It is as far from formulaic as it is possible to be and kept me up far too late in order to finish it. I immediately wanted to read all of this writer's other books as I loved their voice and found that it really drew me into the story and made me think about it even when I'd stepped away from this tale.
This is a thought-provoking read which I'm sure will be a popular and well-read addition to our new library; I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to read it and I know that the students are going to absolutely love it too!
Unfortunately I could just not get into this book, and I was unable to finish it. It was not for me I'm afraid. Too slow to get going and just did not engage me.
A completely different and gentle storyline with a character that's a bit of a recluse. Not going to be to everyone's tastes as it is completely random at times.
A great read. Wise, thought provoking and one that I couldn't put down. I thought it was very well written, and the title and cover drew me in straight away. 5*
Who wouldn't love this book!? The characters make you feel you are part of their lives, you experience their highs and lows just as you would in your own lives with the hope that the ending would turn out well for them. A fabulous book, humorous, poignant and a true reflection of modern life. A great read - highly recommended.
This was an incredibly slow read and unfortunately I could not finish it. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
Slow.
This is a very slow book and it took me a long time to get into it.
It was ok but Mr Doubler was rather rude which I couldn't get my head around.
It took me a LONG time to get into this, with many abortive attempts before I reached the sweet, heart warming stuff everyone talks about. Then I loved it, before it suddenly ended. It was terribly rushed and abrupt, leaving me feeling rather let down after all the build up.
So with the highs and lows, it averages out as just okay.

It may not be classified as "great literature" but what a rewarding experience to read this book! It has a real "feel-good " factor - a totally plausible storyline that draws in the reader's interest. i really felt I wanted to know about Mr Doubler and how he would deal with his situation and make a fresh start as the title suggests. Plenty of detail to maintain the reader's interest with plenty of interesting twists. A most enjoyable read.
Baked, mashed, boiled or fried, Mr Doubler knows his potatoes. But the same can’t be said for people. Since he lost his wife, he’s been on his own at Mirth Farm – and that suits Doubler just fine. Crowds are for other people; the only company he needs are his potato plants and his housekeeper, Mrs Millwood, who visits every day.
So when Mrs Millwood is taken ill, it ruins everything – and Mr Doubler begins to worry that he might have lost his way. But could the kindness of strangers be enough to bring him down from the hill?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is warm, charming and uplifting. I liked that the main characters were not conventional but still so engaging. The story develops beautifully and the result is a heartfelt tale which reminds you of the important role of friends and family in your life. A wonderful read.
Ah what a heartwarming, funny, touching and beautifully written book.
I adored Mr Doubler even though he was kinda bolshy and rude haha he’s lived alone since his wife died with the only company he has in his housekeeper.
He lives and breathes potatoes (he’s a potato farmer and good at it too) and doesn’t see just how lonely and isolated he is until his housekeeper becomes ill and he said left on his own.
Truly wonderful read full of great characters and one you have to read, I loved it 5 stars for sure!!
A hug in a book! This story is so lovely and heartwarming. Mr Doubler is a loner but not a lonely man, that is until his cleaner is unable to visit. Only then does he realise how big a gap there is in his life. This is the perfect book for fans of The 100 year old man who climbed out of a window and disappeared and Aman called Ove.
