I loved Killing Eve the TV show, but unfortunately I just couldn't get into the books. I really wanted to, but the style was just a bit jarring and not aligned with what I'm used to from the genre.
As with other reviewers, after watching the TV series, I found the book a little disappointing. It’s rare when a film/TV show outclasses the book and on this occasion, it has.
Having watched the fabulous TV show and then having read the (slightly disappointing) first book in the wake of that; I was a bit unsure about whether to invest the time in this follow on. I'm glad I did as it was a lot better than the first book and really started to bring out the 'cat and mouse' between Villanelle and Eve. Still not as captivating as the show, but reading with those characters in mind really helps!
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
No Tomorrow is the second book in the Killing Eve trilogy which inspired the hit TV show. Expanding upon the first book, the cat-and-mouse game between Eve and Villanelle intensifies whilst also providing us some backstory and further insight into the two main characters.
Whilst the story is fast-paced, I'm still not overly convinced on why Eve and Villanelle are so obsessed with each other. I thought the exploration of their personal lives was a good concept but what I learnt didn't really interest me either and I wanted to get back more to them hunting each other down. I do like that neither of them are your typical protagonists and that they're both very flawed women and are allowed to be flawed.
Looking forward to the final book in this trilogy and seeing how everything wraps up.
The tv series is great so I thought I would enjoy reading the book, unfortunately in this case, the tv show is far superior to the series of books.
The chapters are incredibly long and jump around a lot, so would be much better to have shortened them to break up the text.
The book is written in the present tense which also irritated me. There's not enough background to the plot. It just jumps right in and doesn't really tell you why something is happening. The characters also don't have much depth so you cant like or hate them.
I listened to the audio version of this book . My only plus was that Lucy Paterson is a good narrator and was probably the best thing about it.. The series should probably come with a warning due to some of the content!!
Thank you to John Murray Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to try out this book, but I think I'll avoid books by this author in future unless they are shown on the TV
I think for me I definitely preferred the first book by Luke Jennings. This fell a little short, although I adored the characters
I enjoyed the first book in the series - it wasn't my fave, but It was good. But the sequel did not quite hit the mark for me. Maybe it was an issue with my expectations being a bit higher.
Gives a better insight into the lives of the characters of the show and about the aims they have- very true to the series
Loved it. Really enjoyed the characters, plot and surprises. At last, a modern thriller that excites and intrigues. Lots of action, lots of bluff, humour and silliness. Great read.
I loved the brilliant TV series Killing Eve but this is one of those rare occasions when I preferred the adaptation to the book. I found it hard to get into this book, and lost interest in it. Each time I picked it I was reluctant to read it. I was disappointed.
I think if I hadn’t been such a fan of the TV show, I wouldn’t have persevered with this book. There are moments of excitement in Vilanelle’s actions and between her and Eve, however the writing style doesn’t work for me and I found myself skim reading large chunks.
I adored this book. The fast, pacey and thilling writing makes this a breeze to read. Seeing Eve and Villanelle circling each other and slowly moving into the same orbit was exciting and nervewracking experience. The beauty of Villanelle is that she's so incredibly unpredictable so it's impossible to guess at the twists the story will take.
My only criticism of this book is that at times Niko felt more like comic relief. I think Eve's complex character is best when she's pressed between loving a stoic, caring and kind man and exciting but dangerous Villanelle. So reducing Niko chipped away at my interest in Eve slightly.
But overall, I LOVED IT.
Great pacing, great plot and who doesn't love Villanelle?! I absolutely adore the constantly shifting dynamics between Eve and Villanelle and the plot twist at the end is fantastic!
Loved it, such a fab book. I loved the series too but the book has so much more to offer. I could not put this down.
I like the first book, but this one is in a whole different class. We pick up the tug of war between Eve and Vilanelle in Venice, where the latter is on an assignment. Things escalate from there while Eve is closing in on Vilanelle. the ending is spectacular and the book portrays a very different character in Vilanelle than the series. This Vilanelle is not flippant, but an ice cold killer that developed an inexplicable obsession with Englishwoman.
I thoroughly enjoyed that one and will be staying away from the series - the books are much more fun.
I have watched series 2 of Killing Eve on BBC so thought I would give the book a go and just loved it. I knew what I was getting and I got it and more. Fast paced and exciting drama! Bravo.
Although I love the TV series I couldn't get into the books on Villanelle at all. Such a shame, just found them too complex to wade through.
Enjoyed this follow up - not quite as good as the tv adaptation but decent crime drama with interesting characters and different to the usual.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
though very different to the tv series killing eve...it does not take away from the fact this is a very enjoyable book and is well written with characters that you really like...
will be keeping an eye out for more of this authors works
