My thanks again to John Murray and NetGalley for an ebook edition of the second in Luke Jennings’ Villanelle trilogy, ‘No Tomorrow’, that was published last month.
The story carries on from ‘Codename Villanelle’ switching between Villanelle’s and Eve’s narratives and expands on their backgrounds and the cat and mouse relationship between them (though who is the hunter and who the hunted?)
Again it is an intelligent fast-paced spy thriller with plenty of twists, strong violence, and razor-sharp dark humour. Overall very satisfying and I shall be on the lookout for the conclusion.
I read this after having watched the complete first series on TV. I found the plot lines overlapped but also diverged. While there were some differences in the cast of characters, the main characters, Villanelle and Eve came across as portrayed by the actors, as did the whole tone of the story with some elements of wacky humour.
It was an easy read and I would certainly look forward to further episodes in print as well as on screen.
I picked this up following Saving Eve which I had watched on TV. It was really easy to pick the characters up and run with the story immediately. This book grew in plots and twists and by the end I just had to keep reading. A great book that could easily have another book in the series as I could have just kept reading.
Good story but found the ending a bit lame. I thought there could have been a lot more to it however overall the story was good.
The second instalment of the pursuit of ‘Villanelle’ international assassin, by Eve Polastri formerly of MI5. Eve’s obsession with hunting down this psychopathic killer grows ever stronger in this book – to the detriment of her marriage, home life and safety.
The book opens with a quirky twist (so I won’t spoil it here) and follows on with the next few of Villanelle’s ‘jobs' – always described with an irresistible black humour; (how does Mr Jennings make us ‘like’ this terrible person?!) A super scene is set in a clifftop mountain hotel involving a weekend party of Nazis/right wing extremists. As the bodies start to mount, Eve is quick to make links of these murders with ‘V’, the assassin she is trying to catch and to the mysterious international body of ‘The twelve’- ‘V’’s ultimate controllers.
Not wanting to give too much away, things get very dark in the last third of the book. Eve questions her ability to stay on the case, and she finally meets her antagonist in person (unlike the TV series where they had already met). Even darker things follow, alternative theories are put to Eve and a completely unexpected twist occurs at the end which was so weird I felt physically hot with shock – who to believe? Again – this ends on a cliffhanger; and I defy anyone to be able to stop this saga, there. Can’t wait for the next one, I’m hooked!
Good followon to the first novel in the series and the basis for the Killing Eve tv series. It will be interesting to see if Jennings can maintain the momentum of the written series alongside the tv series and its influences. A good read overall.
After reading the first book Killing Eve- I was looking forward to this section of the series. Throughly enjoyed the book. Thank you to both NetGalley and John Murray Press for my eARC of this book in exchange for my honest unbiased review.
I was looking forward to the second book in the Killing Eve TV series having watched the series and read the first book. I enjoyed this one too, but was not blown away as the plot was a bit predictable. Nevertheless I enjoyed this one and I'm definitely looking for to more for the TV series and this author.
Having watched the tv series but not read the first book, I was curious to see how this compared. If I’m honest I didn’t find the book as humorous as the series, that may be because the actress who plays V does such a fantastic job.
I enjoyed the book and V is a great character but I’m not as taken with Eve and I don’t think it needed two books to tell the story.
That said I was torn between 3 and 4 stars so 3.5 is probably more accurate.
My thanks to Netgalley for this copy.
Villanelle is back, but now she’s going to be Killing Eve
This is a great sequel to ‘Codename Villanelle’. After giving us backstory in the first book, we now get to see more of the cat and mouse game between Eve & Villanelle. It’s fast moving as Eve and MI6 follow Villanelle around Europe, with more of Villanelle’s hits- it’s what she does best after all, and she’s imaginative and slick as ever; and finally she gets her latest instruction, it’s time to kill Eve...
Thanks so much to #NetGalley and the publisher for my free copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
Such a fun book. Was keen to read this after indulging in the tv series. Love the dark humour & grisly tales.
Not the ending I was expecting at all.
I’m hoping there’s more adventures to follow!
I requested this book after binge watching the Killing Eve tv series, as I reallywanted to know what was going to happen next.
The book continues the story of Eve, who is determined to catch psychopath Villanelle who she believes is responsible for several murders. Villanelle continues to taunt Eve, even breaking into her house in her absence and leaving clues.
The story takes us from Venice to Russia as Eve discovers who has employed Villanelle to carry out the killings culminating in a disturbing discovery. There is an unexpected twist at the end as the two ladies finally meet face to face. Definitely not the ending I was expecting, but all the better for it.
If you enjoyed the tv series, you will definitely want to read this book.
I have had the first Killing Eve tale on my bedside table since the first episode of the hit bbc tv show came out. Normally I always read the book before I watch the film or tv show but when I saw this come up on Netgalley I binge watched the first series and then read this book in a matter of a few days. It isn't a long book but it sure as hell packs a punch. They fit a lot in. I love the character of Eve but I also really like Villanelle and find the story lines just the right amount of conplex for me. Third book now please!
I enjoyed Codename Villanelle but for me No Tomorrow, the second in the series that inspired the TV drama Killing Eve, is even better.
It continues the story of Villanelle, a glamorous and ruthless Russian assassin in the pay of a mysterious organisation, and Eve, the MI5 operative who is trying to track her down. But I think what gives this book the edge is the arc of the characters.
Villanelle, previously portrayed as an invulnerable sociopath, is now showing signs of becoming emotionally involved in her work. Meanwhile, Eve’s pursuit of Villanelle is exposing her to a world of luxury and influence, quite different from her cosy marriage and her even cosier flat.
There is great wit and humour here (I loved Eve’s dinner party from hell, haven’t we all had one of those?) There is also a ratcheting up of the tension as the dynamic between Eve and Villanelle is beautifully played out.
Finally, there is a fantastic twist which means that if there is to be another book (and I really hope there is) the story will have to take a whole new direction.
This is the second book in the series and is just as good as the first.
The cat and mouse game continues between Eve and V and builds up to a gripping end to this book.
The assassinations are gruesome as ever but V has no qualms about ending someone’s life.
Eve and the team are hot on her heels at one point but V always seems to have the upper hand.
Niko has a tough time coping with Eve’s work life and tells her he’s had enough. But will she choose to give up her mission to catch V?
This is a completely different crime thriller and I really enjoyed the humour and dialogue with V.
Thanks to John Murray and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
That’s more like it.
A great sequel, so much more substance than the first book in the series. Really getting a feel of the main characters.
Definitely looking forward to the next book in the series (and the TV series as well).
Thanks NetGalley and John Murray Press for a review copy.
3.5 stars
This book is tremendous fun.
It goes from complete tongue in cheek attitude,to creative violence in seconds.
Both Eve and Villanelle are great characters.
Some excellent twists and turns in the storyline keeping pace nicely.
I feel the sex scenes can be halved, they didn't really add to the story.
Hope there's a third book.... this could be quite a ride.
So looking forward to this follow-up.
Luke takes the character of Villanelle further and makes this area of ruthless female assassin his own territory.
She is still, the go to hit man, for the nebulous grouping, known as ‘the twelve’ who operate outside any sponsored country’s influence to exercise their own view of a new world order.
She has a new handler less familiar and not as close with her and the contracts continue to bring her brief moments of elation. Killing and bringing death makes her feel most alive but she longs for more dangerous missions. Meanwhile, her fixation with Eve places her at greater risk and upsets her controllers who feel her pre-occupation with the British secret service operative, Eve, dangerous to their activities. Despite, this sense of an unfulfilled sexual chemistry it becomes increasingly obvious that Eve must die.
I really found this unique relationship intriguing and made the hunt for Villanelle and the growing danger to Eve fascinating and marks the story out from other modern spy thrillers. I can also understand how it works so well as a TV adaptation.
Like a runaway train ride it is a desperate rollercoaster full of thrills and tricky turns. Like a steep mountain road, you worry that you did not test your brakes when you were prompted. The gradient gets away from you as you head on to certain disaster. This story propels you to the impending death of Eve, as the title suggests. However, as you learn more about her you fear for her and hope things will work out. Equally, you don’t want Villanelle to be compromised and your loyalties are stretched to breaking.
The strength of the writing is the two wonderful strong female characters the author has crafted. Normal political allegiances and national loyalties are strained as you fear the end of one of these women.
Despite this sense of dread the writing is captivating taking us across Europe and the world of spies and counter espionage was never so riveting.
A wonderful thrilling mystery. Fun, dark and life ending, a story that grabs your heart and chills your blood. Original and like all good books in this genre, not everything that happens is what it seems or done for the reasons professed. Who’d be a secret agent?
Autant de plaisir qu'avec le premier, une très bonne évolution, un mystère toujours bien en place, une intrigue passionnante, hate de lire le prochain.
I was lucky to receive an ARC of this book and the previous book from Netgalley and the publisher,so as soon as I had finished Codename Villanelle I went straight on to this book, and like the last book, could not put it down.It continues the story of Eve Polastri's hunt for Villanelle and the cat and mouse behaviour of the two protagonists.
Tightly plotted and exciting,it ends in such a way that you have to hope there will be a third book in the series-I can't wait!
