I'm a kindergarten teacher and these were so much fun to try with my students! They are cute, the instructions were easy to use, and they helped reinforce the letters and numbers I was teaching.
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’m not sure if it was the way it downloaded to my iPad or not, but the layout of the pages were really messed up with half of the picture and instructions on one page and then another. I couldn’t really follow what was happening so I would have to give such a review.
Thank you @netgalley for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Drawing is one of my favorite things to do with my daughter. It’s a great way to relax and spend time together. We follow a couple of YouTube channels who post weekly lessons and also have numerous tutorial books to help guide us as we practice.
I was super excited when I spotted Draw Alphabeasts. Steve Harpster has come up with a brilliant way to get everyone drawing fun, imaginative characters. In this book, all of his tutorials begin with either a number or a letter of the alphabet. Even the youngest artist will be able to follow along which I’m sure will make them super happy as they watch these familiar shapes become a fun, new image.
The book is broken down into 4 chapters: Aliens, Robots, Monsters and Haunted Creeps. All images are super, playful cartoons and definitley kid friendly. The step-by-step tutorials are incredibly easy to follow and each character only requires a few steps to complete. It also includes some vivid images that will help inspire your artist to add color to their creations and eventually start putting them all together.
I think this would make a wonderful gift paired with a sketchbook and some drawing supplies. My daughter is 8 and I know so many of her friends and classmates who would enjoy this book. We will definitely be adding it to our collection. The author offers several similar books with different themes. We look forward to checking those out as well. You can follow him @harptoons or check out his YouTube channel called Draw With Steve Harpster for more info!
I thought this book looked so interesting and fun but I was not able to get it to download properly so I can't really offer a valid review. If the book is anything like the cover it should be great.
My daughters are 13 and 10 and they LOVE to draw as do I so when I saw this I had to try it out. I usually by how to draw books at thrift stores so gave this one shot . I love that not only are there letters, there are numbers you can draw too. For example the number 8 is a " Slurg" Looks like a sea monster with Octopus arms and the head of a Squid, and antennas like a butterfly lol. Ok since my name starts with a V I had to try this little guy out lol... his name was " Vic" and it's a 4 armed robot with one eye lol. Lower case and upper case have drawings. My daughters BOTH loved " Horton" lol The letter H makes a Goat lol.... he's pretty cool actually. Another V critter " Vurg" is pretty cool, not sure what to compare him to lol.... I have pictures of these few I am adding so you can Visualize them lol. So in all a very fun book to grab and draw in your spare time, I also think this would be cool for Kindergartners. . One picture below shows you V AND W drawings lol.
'Draw AlphaBeasts' is a really cute guide to drawing a range of creatures (awesome aliens, rad robots, monster mayhem and haunted creeps of Spiderbite House). Using letters and numbers, Harpster provides step-by-step guides to drawing adorable creepy beasts.
The central concept of this book is pretty simple: starting with a letter or number draw a monster, alien, or robot. Each drawing takes just a few steps with varying degrees of detail. For the most part, this means that once you have the basic designs down it wouldn't be difficult to alter the drawing to truly make it your own. Even more importantly, this book can train a young artist to look for simple shapes in things that they want to draw, thew ways to use simple lines as a starting point for a more complex image.
Trying to read this on a computer was difficult as the formatting was all over the place. The pictures separated into blank pages and half-finished drawings. That said, the few pictures that I was able to see where so cute and fun and the instructions of how to draw were easy. It looks like a fun book for children.
If I'm being honest, my favorite and least favorite things about this book were basically the same thing. This book offers some great guidance into doodling off of numbers and letters to create aliens, monsters, etc. I wish that the original number or letter stood out more when the project was finished because I felt like that lack of visibility was sort of counter productive when a child is learning their numbers and letters. I definitely found that the letters maintained more visibility than numbers did in the process.
That being said, this is still a very cool book that will help children feel more comfortable with some basic doodling and creative expression.
Is this book just for kids? Not in my opinion. I may or may not have spent a bit of time creating my name in monster letters while I was checking it out. :-)
Brilliant... I love sitting with my 7yr old daughter drawing these and making up stories as we go. I highly recommend this book for all ages. So much fun can be had with just a bit of imagination.
It is so nice to see clever interactions with print. Playing with xenomorphs is a great way to explore emergent literacy. I enjoyed the loose narrative, and beautiful renderings. My child loved puzzling out the different letters and we even tried to draw some. It was a fun book, with lots of examples. We didn't get through the whole book in one sitting, but we will return to it.
This book is very descriptive in its illustrations. Who knew you could draw complete looking images from using simple things such as letters and numbers. I am in no way an artist and my handwriting is absolutely horrible but now I can draw really neat looking characters thanks to this book.
I’ve always wanted to learn to draw. I’ve bought many (too many!) how to draw books over the years and have a great collection. However, I still cannot draw.
A few months ago I discovered Steve Harpster’s books and bought two — Drawing Super Cute Baby Animals and Drawing Fun, Friendly Pets. The thing that I love about these books is that they start with a lower case letter (in other books, he begins with a number or a heart) and show step-by-step how to draw the animal. Whenever I have tried to draw in the past, I always struggled to start, not knowing if I should use basic shapes or dive right in and worry about proportions later. But Harpster’s method eliminates that problem!
So when I saw Harpster has a new book, I jumped at the chance to check it out. AlphaBeasts uses both letters and numbers to draw these cute monsters, aliens and robots. It’s a lot of fun for me and is sure to appeal to kids. There are a lot of drawings in this book — more than the other ones, which is great. The robots are my favorite — they are so cool. While the age range is 6-8 for this book, I think it’s more like 6+ or 6-100! Absolutely everyone can benefit from Harpster’s technique and feel a sense of accomplishment upon seeing their completed drawings.
I am amazed how Harpster can arrive at such a good rendition of an animal, monster, robot or alien from a simple letter or number. His books make me feel like I can draw, which is quite a feat. I have never found that to be true of other books. Physically, Harpster’s books are nicely printed on thick glossy paper and he includes tons of colorful pictures. I have three other books of his in my Amazon cart and will be buying them as soon as I finish this review. It’s so satisfying to be able to finally draw!
This book is so fun for anyone who loves to draw! I am excited to demonstrate some of these simple drawings to my preschoolers saving the rest for my older boys! This books starts off with simple numbers and letters and transforms them into crazy looking creatures and beasts! A great activity to pull out for a rainy day!
This would make a great addition in a classroom or to any children’s craft and art library.
Thank you to F+W Media, Impact Books and NetGalley for this advanced copy! My opinions are my own. This book will be published December 25, 2018.

This book is cute. I'm not a great drawer, but step-by-step instructions make it pretty easy even for someone like me. There are lots of tips to bring your own style into your robots, beasts and monsters which I did try, but I think I will stick to the instructions at this point.
These are exactly as depicted on the cover throughout. There is a letter or number within your drawing, but it won't look like an "A" with mouth/tail/arms/legs etc. It will be more hidden within your creature.
My kids loved to pick out which of these was their favorite, try to do the drawing themselves, and find the letter or number in the finished product. My kids are 6 and 4. This was too advanced for my 4 year old, but the 6 year old could pretty easily look at what was being instructed and try to follow along with varying degrees of success. This would probably be an excellent book for kids about 7 or above, especially if they have an interest in drawing.
Draw Alphabeasts: 130+ Monsters, Aliens and Robots from Letters and Numbers by Steve Harpster is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. Wow, it is a fun and informative kids book to draw robots, monster, strange animals, and more starting with a letter or number. All of it is step-by-step instructions/guide. Bright colored monsters guide the reader through the book! Cute fun! I think my grandkids will love this! Certainly on my list to pick up!
A cute book for young people or those just beginning steps towards drawing. My favorite part was the Spiderbite house. Over 100 crazy critters to create and there is no wrong way for them to turn out.
There are some suggestions and basic line drawings to show you how to start, but the actual ways to draw are pretty much left up to the individual artist. I like how it declares that changing a singular element makes a difference in the feel of the result.
I just Loved this book Draw AlphaBeasts by Steve Harpster. I found this book just fun throughout. To write a letter of the alphabet or a number then to turn it, to look like a alien, a monster, zombies etc.
Then, to watch your child's face, was just magic. They try and copy it as well. I had lots of hours of fun doing this especially as when they showed their friends at school how a monster, alien etc was created just by a letter of the alphabet.
A beautiful book and a great christmas or birthday present for any child who loves to draw especially with a twist.
Big Thank you to Netgalley and Steve Harpster the author for an amazing book.
Interesting book, with the help of the Numbers and Letters you can draw all kind of creatures. Just use your imagination. Can't wait to use the ideas with my children.
Great job!
Thank you Netgalley and the author for this copy.
My nieces and nephews and I have to say myself had great fun with this book. It was halloween last night so this book was perfectly timed. We used one or two dice to throw a number and then we all drew a beast using that number with the help of some ideas from this book. We then picked best or scariest one as the winner and they threw the next number. Their ages ranged from six to twelve years old but everyone found the book enjoyable and easy to follow. It was a great way for the younger ones to learn some of the higher numbers in a fun and creatively visual way.
Many thanks to Steve Harpster and F&W Meadia for this advanced copy it made our Halloween!
