Absolutely love that the editor of this book did artist backgrounds on every designer whose patterns were used to display each technique discussed in the book. A lot of really creative and great ideas perfect for every level of crocheter.
Some beautiful projects in this book. I hope to try at least one of them. Nicely illustrated, clear instructions.
I was very excited to get access to this book and see some new patterns. It did not disappoint and the use of pattern and colors was great. I think I would buy the hardcover version as it would be easier to follow than the online version.

The Art of Crochet Blankets: 18 Projects Inspired by Modern Makers is a lovely book with great designs, and stories that tell of how they were inspired and came together. Some of the designs were just not my style, which happens with any collection of art or designs, but others made me smile and think about what I might do in a similar vein. For instance, the Boho Desert, Abstract Blocks, and Layered Waves caught my eye, and I love them. I also enjoyed getting to know the artists and medium that inspired some of these designs. Seeing the beauty and creativity in the original, and how the shapes and colors were turned into something new was very interesting. I like how varied the starting points were, and in turn how different the end results turned out. While I am not likely to design my own blankets, I like reading or binge watching too much as I stitch, I do like seeing how inspiration can become a tangible creation and a design to share. However, I just might be giving one (or more) of these patterns a go.
I think this book would be a good addition to a personal library if you like creating and exploring new designs, and enjoy the inspiration of others that do as well. For those of us who are content to find a lovely pattern and maybe change a color, size, or so on I think this would be better borrowed from the library. It is wonderful and lovely to explore, but not a necessary addition to my craft room at this point.
Loved it! Great patterns, easy to follow instructions which are the two main things my customers look for!
The Art of Crochet Blankets is a new tutorial crochet blanket project book. Released 13th Nov 2018 by Interweave in collaboration with F+W, it's 144 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.
The 'hook' for this collection is that the designs are collaborative and inspired by other arts such as weaving, digital art, fabric design, paper cutting, tilemaking, and quilting. There are some beautiful and evocative projects here. It's impressive how most of the 18 original projects coordinate so well with their inspiration art without copying them slavishly. That, for me, was the most valuable takeaway from the entire book; that it was possible to look for inspiration and pattern design from other items in your interior decor which can be used to coordinate with textile projects.
For each of the inspiration design chapters there are 3 projects listed. The tutorials are well written and complete, with materials lists and abundant photography. The designers for each chapter have a short and interesting bio introduction. The book doesn't include website info for the designers, but there is a short materials resource guide at the end of the book. A short google search turns up website info and e-tailers for most of the designers in the book.
There are several of these projects which called to me. Many of them would also be adaptable to use up yarn scraps and remnants.
Lovely book, well photographed and clearly written. The tutorials include diagram keys and instructions for the special shapings used in several of the projects in the book.
Four stars, well done!
Beautiful but very complicated patterns. It would do well in a large library system with a deep fiber arts section.
A beautiful book of great crochet blankets, I thought it was a little too advanced for a beginner, however it is a beautiful book to have. The book is full of beautiful blankets, there are wonderful colour pictures and clear instructions. A great addition to any coffee table to peruse, if you are a crocheter this has some great designs to keep you crocheting for hours.
Rachele Carmona's The Art of Crochet Blankets features designs inspired by modern artists. I found the designs to be beautiful and varied. This book is best for more experienced crocheters. I did find some of the blankets to be on the small side (just over 2 foot by 3 foot). For several of the patterns an enormous variety of yarn colors are listed - over 26 - which would bankrupt me. It would also have been nice to see a good overall photo of each completed blanket. If you are looking for unconventional crochet blankets, however, this would be an excellent book.
Great source of information for any crochet fan. Lots of new ideas to try out. And lots you can learn from this book too
A great book for crochet artists everywhere. Although it is not a beginner's book, it does give tutorials on the individual stitches that will help learn the more complicated patterns. The author takes a unique pattern in another medium and turns it into crochet art. This is most definitely not your Grandma's crochet!
This is a great book - but for someone that has been crocheting for a while and knows alot about it. The blankets are beautiful. The pictures are great.
Definitely not a book for beginners, but if you're damn good at crocheting and quilting and you're wanting ideas, you'll want to check this book out - tons of great ideas for gorgeous blankets that have beginners like me eyeing their misshapen attempts at a granny square and going "whyyyy?"
So yes, if crocheting is what you're good at, go for it! I'll be over here, working on my granny squares and trying to figure out why they keep turning out to be granny circles and granny trapezoids...
Art is the operative word here. These are gorgeous blankets and each artist gives the reader detailed instructions on how to create them. This isn’t your mother’s Granny Square couch throw. Each blanket comes with diagrams, crochet charts, and material lists as well as some background on the artists. Beautiful book.
A very interesting concept of finding inspiration from other artists, is the bases of this crotchet blanket book The author looks at work from a weaver, a fabric designer, a digital artist, a paper cutter artist, a concrete tile designer and quilt designer. In most cases the adaptation works really well and the crochet blanket really makes a statement, but it hasn't really worked for me in two of the cases, that may just be a matter of taste. On the whole I love the colour and the type of stitches used - don't think old fashioned granny square, but modern vibrant designs and ideas.
This book actually works on two levels, it shows the inspiration of various mediums, and then show the practical execution of the finished crochet pattern. All crochet patterns are provided and tutorial on the stitches are also shown, both of which are easy to follow.
The blankets in this book are indeed art. The book has separate sections showing and explaining different art mediums, an artist and their work in that medium along with a crocheted blanket (with pattern instructions) representing that medium. For instance weaving or cement tile. As beautiful as the blankets are I don’t see making any of them myself. I think they would be too challenging for me. I think this would be more of a coffee table type book. Great to look at to see what others are able to do.
Another great crochet blanket book.
Lots of patterns with terrific instructions and great photography.
Already used this to start a baby blanket, and easy to adapt my wool thickness and hook size to whatever pattern I choose.
Great book, recommended.
This is a beautifully crafted book by a crochet loving author who wanted to do more with her crochet skills. Taking the artistry of six other professional artist/ designers in other mediums such as tapestry weaving design, digital art, fabric design, concrete tile design and others, she created crochet patterns that used their ideas and translated them into crochet designs. There are three crochet design patterns that use elements of each of the other artists design to create something new. Short biographies are given for each artist along with the display of their original artwork. Then each crochet pattern is given step by step. This is a beautiful and inovative book that honors the expertise of the artists included. The photography and instructional layouts are superb. This is a very thoughtful and inspiring book for crocheters.
A nice addition to the crochet patterns collection. Uses traditional techniques with fun outcomes. I love some of the afghan patterns and can't wait to try them out myself.
Beautiful contemporary patterns and an interesting way of presenting the designs, to tie in with other types of visual art. This would make a great reference book for anyone interested in crochet. While I haven't tried any of the patterns yet the instructions do seem quite clear but I would think that this is not a book for beginners to the craft but would make a worthy addition to the experienced crochet crafter's library.
