Oh my what a beautiful, amazing, wonderful book, full of highs and lows. Poignant and devastating I totally adored it and I fully intend to buy a print copy for myself.I
Only the second book that has made me cry, and I am still choked up ten minutes later.
A great romantic comedy full of relatable characters and a truth of love story that will make you ache
An emotional rollercoaster of a read about the complexities of falling in love when you're already committed to someone else. Jamie and Stephanie's story had me hooked and even though I knew where the book was heading it still yanked at my heartstrings in all the right places. I loved the writing style and the dual narrative which gave me an insight into both characters. I predict big things for this book in 2019!
The Day We Met is a brilliant story about Stephanie & Jamie who meet when Stephanie's family arrange a getaway for her after a difficult few months.
I absolutely loved this book, it draws you in and you just want to keep reading and letting the world pass you by, whilst you see how fate keeps intervening to make sure Stephanie & Jamie keep being drawn back together.
This story is written over a ten year period and see's both Stephanie & Jamie go through massive changes in their lives in the search of true happiness.
By the time I reached the end of this book, I had experienced every emotion that you feel in a relationship, the highs and the lows and everything inbetween. My heart was broken by the final page and I was left feeling physically bereft as I had become so emotionally invested in the characters.
A massive 5 stars and I look forward to the success of this book in 2019!
This is a book is based around adultery and this couple must be together no matter who they hurt because their love is the love of their lives - quite literally! The book is centred around the idea that it's okay to be selfish because life is too short to be unhappy. My problem with the book is that I felt I was 'told' the story and spoon fed the author's ideas on the subject. I would rather have been 'shown' the story because I felt I couldn't connect with Jamie or Stephanie. I didn't believe in their love story because there was too much introspection about the above themes and I was left feeling irritated and disconnected. I think the idea was good but the execution of the story wasn't great. One day in December was way better and this wasn't a patch on that book. Sorry not for me. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me review this book.
This is being marketed with 'If you loved One Day by David Nicholls...' and to some extent, they're right - it is indeed completely derivative but with none of the humour which cut through the sentimentality of One Day. I finished it, so it wasn't awful, but it missed the central 'missed opportunities' idea which worked for One Day - which is that the two protagonists genuinely kept missing their chances, misunderstandings, miscommunications etc. In 'The Day We Met' there's no sense of something missed. They meet, connect, have an affair and simply fail to break up with their current partners, instead doubling-down on their unsatisfying relationships by bringing children into them, despite knowing they love someone else. I kept thinking 'well, you met him before you even got married, so maybe don't get married?' Even if you can't be with the guy you just met, don't marry someone if you love someone else. After that, I couldn't work up much empathy for them and their annual whiny hookups, I'm afraid.
When Stephanie and Jamie meet they feel an instant attraction but they are both committed longterm to other people. They arrange to meet again the same time the following year and as their relationship develops realise they are deeply in love with each other. Few will sympathise with cheaters, especially if they have been on the wrong side of a marriage breakdown themselves, but the characters of Steph and Jamie are so well drawn that the reader can't help but give them a chance.
The book is beautifully written with its emphasis on family relationships and how, as time passes, we change as people and not always in tandem with our partners.
I particularly enjoyed the musical references and the way the therapist was used to help Steph find her way through and understand her choices.
A word of warning about the ending which for me wasn't a complete surprise as it may be a trigger for some people. Readers of One Day will enjoy The Day We Met, a 21st century love story that many will relate to. A box of tissues should be given with each book sold. Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House UK/Ebury for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The Day We Met by Roxie Cooper a five-star read that will change you. I was excited to sin my teeth into this one when I read the blurb as it’s not often you see a novel that deals with infidelity, and deals with it well. I was so glad that Roxie Cooper did it well, no matter your views this story will show you a different side. The story is told from different times and points of view as it unfolds it can be a little confusing but then the more you read, the more you will understand and be drawn in, enjoying the telling and seeing the other side. One thing I will say is make sure you don’t read the last few chapters in public as you need tissues. This is one of the most compelling reads of the year, and a novel I wont easily forget, just like an old song sticks in your brain and makes you smile when you hear it again, certain lines of this story will do the same for me I’m sure.
Stephanie and Jamie meet at an annual art and photography workshop and both feel an instant attraction to each other. There's just a small problem....Both are in long term and settled relationships.
Over the next ten years they meet at the annual workshop and try to convince themselves they can just be friends but Cupid has other ideas.
Having been in a similar situation this story resonates with me. I thought the author captured so well the feelings of guilt and longing whilst this couple continued to do the right thing by their partners.
This book demonstrates that life really is too short and shows us that sometimes we have to grab the bull by the horns and put our own happiness first.
The most beautiful book about the strongest love. Everyone should have this kind of love in their life and hold onto it. Live every moment and enjoy every minute. A truly beautiful read that made me sob my heart out.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
Can't help but be on the side of the bad guys, the adulterers, when their connection is how Steph and Jamie's is
Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read it in exchange for an honest review
This was not what I was expecting at all, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it (especially that ending). But it's well written and moving and an accurate portrayal of how complicated love can be, and worth a read if you're looking for something fresh in the genre.
I really enjoyed this light, romantic novel about unrequited love and friendship. It's a great choice for fans of "One Day", and an ideal beach read or something to pick up when you're in need of an indulgent cheer-up novel.
Enjoyable enough for me to come back every night and read until the end! Sometimes a little predictable, I liked the idea of the story although sometimes I felt the characters were a little one dimensional. Despite the subject matter being quite contentious however I did feel for both characters and their struggle and wished they could have got their act together sooner! Thankyou to netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. 3/5
When Jamie and Stephanie meet they realize they have met their souls mates, the person they are meant to be with. The only problem is that Jamie is married and loves his wife and Stephanie is engaged. We follow them over the next ten years as their lives move on but their connection to each other remains the same.
I can't believe I was on the side of the cheaters in this book, but I was. Jamie and Stephanie are very likable characters and their passion for each other is felt through the words of the author.
I didn't know which way the story would end as one year led into another and I thought time had to run out for the lovers.
A book which drew me inside the story and made me not want to put it down until the last page. I even shed a few tears.
This is Roxie Cooper's second book and is completely different from her first book ( which I loved).
I think she's done so well with this book and look forward to the next one.
There is no way you can describe this book that can give it justice. Beautifully written, I felt every emotion. It moved me to tears I felt the pain and heartbreak and the love all in one. Thank you so much for allowing me to read this and I will be following this author and awaiting another beautiful book! 100 stars!
Mostly lovely romance! Matt and Stephanie are engaged and Helen and Jamie are married but when Stephanie and Jamie meet, sparks fly and the souls connect. There were some truly magical moments, that made me think this could be a book I fall in love with. The writer has a lovely style and paints some beautiful pictures. The research that went into the book doesn't go unnoticed. And the book delved into some philosophical ideas around fidelity and love. However, I didn't think the "twist" was necessary or that unexpected and it left me dissatisfied with the direction of the book. It felt like gratuitous drama.
Absolutely heartbreaking and glorious all at once. A reminder that soulmates are REAL, don’t waste time with anything less than magnificent.
I thought I was not really into Steph's and Jamie's story until I stopped for a few days. As I picked up the book again I realised I could not put it down
! It was a beautiful story and what I liked about it is that none of the characters are perfect and they make mistakes and the fact that both of the main characters are with different people (and cheat) makes it real and you can appreciate their flaws and how they think.
The ending was truly heartbreaking but this is a book that really makes you appreciate and realise that your time is now.
A wonderful yet heartbreaking book which had me crying in public reading the final few chapters.
Stephanie and Jamie are meant to be together, but Stephanie is with Matt and Jamie is with Helen.
The couple first meet at an arty weekend away, despite their partners and their own better judgement, there is an instant and undeniable connection. Their story unfolds over the years with chapters alternating from their own perspectives. They're extremely likeable characters and it's one hell of a love story.
Definitely a book for fan's of Josie Silver's One Day in December.
5 stars.
