This book I found myself trying to compare to his other books I enjoyed instead of trying to let it in for it's own merits.
I just couldn't get really into this book and I hate that as his writing style is good.
He Is Watching You is my first book by the author. Detective Maddie is given a desk job for her safety after her cover is blown. She is soon involved in something more, of course, because she isn't happy with a desk job. Will she be safe? Maddie is likeable and strong. The plot is engaging and compulsively readable. Mystery thriller fans will love. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
(Rounded up from 4.5)
Maddie Ives is an undercover police officer in Manchester but after an operation goes bad and she is pulled out and shipped down south.
Her new boss is less than impressed with her and assigns her to missing persons. The report of a young woman is brought to her attention, a case which other officers had dismissed but something about it makes Maddie uneasy.
DI Henry Blaker is assigned hit and run case, was it an accident or murder?
Soon Maddie and Blaker’s cases will collide with deadly consequences.
So this a new series from Charlie Gallagher featuring new detectives Maddie Ives and Henry Blaker.
What a fantastic, action packed police procedural this is! There are so many great twists and nail biting scenes. Do start this book before bed because I guarantee it will keep you awake!
As with several books I’ve read lately, Charlie Gallagher is a serving police officer and it really shows with little details to add to the authenticity of the story.
I absolutely loved the two new characters! Maddie is a strong willed, so used to doing as she pleases, it’s a bit of a culture shock for her having to fit into a team and to do the job she’s been assigned. Henry Blaker is a grumpy and experienced detective, with a bit of a temper but he is the only one who seems to see the potential in Maddie. The way they interact and their relationship really make this book.
My only issue was the start of the book felt a little disorganised. There are several different viewpoints and new characters which, at first, I didn’t really understand how they related to each other but Charlie Gallagher cleverly intertwines the narrative to make a fantastic story.
He is watching you a must for fans of police procedurals with strong female leads.
Very good murder mystery that kept me gripped throughout the story. The girl in the container is what I would have called it ! Look forward to reading more from this author.
This is the start of a brand new series of books from Charlie, with a new Police Officer for the reader to get to know but still set near my home town of Canterbury.
This book follows DS Maddie Ives who was working undercover in Manchester before being unceremoniously transferred down to beautiful Canterbury with it's stunning Cathedral.
As she has been working undercover for a while she really doesn't want to move down to Kent but it is either that or be sacked so she doesn't really have much choice.
When she is down here she has to investigate the case of a missing alcoholic woman and is pretty sure something has happened to her so sets out to investigate it thoroughly.
In the meantime DI Harry Baker is looking into another case where a person has been killed in a hit and run, although he is sure it was murder.
To start with I couldn't work out how the two cases could be related but it all worked together nicely.
I'll be honest and say that I thought Maddie was very self-centred and very entitled but think she was written that way as she had been undewrcover for so long that she forgot what it was like to be a DS again and how to work with and trust other people again.
THe book is a really good book, which flowed nicely and once I got over Maddie's attitude I really enjoyed the book.
I have been a fan of Charlie’s books since I was introduced to them earlier this year. As soon as he releases another book, I eagerly get a copy as soon as possible and do nothing else but read it for the rest of the day. I very (im)patiently wait for him to release another book and for the time being the wait is over because ‘He Is Watching You’ was released on 14th November 2018. I absolutely loved reading this introduction to a new series but more about that in a bit.
‘He Is Watching You’ introduces us to the new detective pairing of Detective Sergeant Maddie Ives and Detective Inspector Harry Blaker. Maddie is transferred from another force area and assigned missing persons cases. At the same time DI Blaker is called to the scene of a hit and run, which he is convinced is deliberate. Two separate cases but it isn’t long before links between Ives’ and Blaker’s cases are established and the two police officers have to work together. I have to be honest and say that it took me a little while to warm to Ives’ because she (sorry to be blunt) seems to be so far up her rear end that she has almost disappeared. She has self confidence in abundance, she has ideas above her station and her expectations exceed her capabilities (but that’s just my opinion). She is also very opinionated and doesn’t hesitate to let everybody know her views. It was a lot easier to take to DI Blaker, who is basically a grumpy old git and he works a lot of hours. At first I wasn’t sure that Ives and Blaker would get on because they have such different personalities but somehow they get on well together and they are one strong team.
Holy moly, ‘He Is Watching You’ is one hell of a fantastic start to what promises to be a fantastic series. I was hooked from the moment I started to read. Charlie is a serving police officer himself and so you know that his writing is going to be authentic, gritty and raw. He doesn’t hold anything back or sanitise anything. Reading ‘He Is Watching You’ soon became an addiction and I turned into an addict, who was always in need of her next fix. I found it nigh on impossible to put the book down and the book went everywhere with me because I couldn’t stop reading. I tried to ration how much I read in one session because I didn’t want to finish the book too quickly. That idea soon went out of the window. I binge read the book over the space of a couple of days which really worked because it gave me some idea of the intensity of the police investigation. Charlie writes so convincingly and so realistically that I really did feel as though I was a member of the investigating team. I started to interact with the book and by that I mean that I was giving out tips on what to ask or focus on and I would say rude words occasionally because of something I had read. Get me, I am an addict of all things Law & Order- all versions, NCIS Los Angeles and I think I am an expert on the legal system. Ha ha.
‘He Is Watching You’ is superbly written. Charlie entices you in to the story and before you know it you just can’t escape his clutches. The story is written from three different perspectives- that of Harry, that of Maddie and that of the killer himself. This way of telling the story works really well, the chapters interlink and the story flows seamlessly as a result. Some of the details might be a bit gruesome but not enough to put me off reading it.
For me, ‘He Is Watching You’ has the perfect mix of drama, suspense, murder, mystery, intrigue and gritty realism. I absolutely loved reading it and I can’t wait to read the next in the series. Here’s hoping that we don’t have too long to wait- hint hint. I would definitely recommend this author and all of his books to other readers. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Well-written and action packed police procedural featuring DS Maddie Ives in a new series by this author. It's always such a joy to discover a new author and to get in on the start of something new -- I'm hooked and can't wait to read the next! I read this in one sitting because I couldn't put it down as it pulled me in immediately.Until recently she worked only undercover, bringing in some of the most violent and vicious crime lords. In order to save a man, she broke cover and has now been sent far, far away to mainly work a desk. According to her supervisors this move is to protect her ... but is it really?
This is my first book by Charlie Gallagher and I have really enjoyed the thriller ride that this story had me on.
I love the character Harry Blaker, he is a great detective and as sharp as a tack, and Maddie really give him a hard time, as well as trying to fit in to her new position she has been transferred into, as a Missing Persons inspector.
But as the book goes on, her position leads her into more than just being "Misper"
A recovering alcoholic goes missing, and another case is a hit an run victim.
Then bring in the dead girl, who the missing alcoholic is trapped in a container with, and her evil captor watching her die.
Lots of twists and turns and just fantastic finish at the end, had me on the edge of my seat wanting to read faster to get to the ending.
Terrific book and looking forward to more by this new author to me.
Terrific opener, so very creepy! This had some great characters!
The writing is very detailed, sometimes the step by step process it details slows the pace down. I noticed this more as the groundwork of plot and characters was laid out. Once the story started moving along I didn’t seem to notice this anymore.
This was a fun ride and a great series opener with a satisfying conclusion. The vocab list at the end was a good idea for those that aren’t familiar with British terms/slang! I would read more by this author and recommend this book.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Joffe Books for a copy in exchange for a review.
Good book, really enjoyed it. Will recommend this book to others. And will read it more than one 5******
Detective Maddie Ives was a covert officer for most of her career. When her identity was compromised, her boss had her transfer to another location for her own safety. Now Maddie’s assignment was coordinator of the missing persons’ unit…a job she loathed. But when she intermittently teamed up with inspector Harry Blaker on his murder case, Maddie was in her element once again. Both tried to race against time to find a serial killer who enjoyed watching his victims die using a remote camera.
He is Watching You was a fast paced well written story that included many detailed police procedures which added to the realism of the plot. This was the first book I read by this author, and I look forward to reading more of his work.
This is an extremely well written police procedural/thriller You can tell that this author comes from this background the authenticity shines in every page
Detective Sergeant Maddie Ives as until now worked undercover but when her cover was broken she has been sent to the missing persons desk supposedly for her own safety but is there actually more going on. When she is handed the case of a woman who has gone missing innumerable times it seems like a open and shut case so why is her gut telling her it is something more. So begins the quest for a murderer that will have her working with DI Harry Baker when his hit and run case overlaps. This book is unusual as it is written in the POV of three The police, The victims and the murderer All together a thrill ride that will have you reading until the early hours as you won't want to put it down
Charlie Gallagher just keeps getting better with every book! It pulled me in from the start and kept me enthralled to the very last page. Strong characters in Maddie and Harry, well written, a great plot and plenty of fast paced action. An easy 5* from me and highly recommended. Looking forward to more from this exciting new combination. My thanks to Net Galley for my copy. Reviews on Amazon, Goodreads and Facebook.
I liked the two main characters, DI Blaker and DS Maddie Ives, in this new series. Blaker is the older more experienced detective; Maddie, whose undercover role in Manchester has been exposed, is the unhappy new member of the department in Lennockshire.
A hit and run, a missing person's case, and a serial killer--how are these three connected? Well, the reader is knows, but the detectives have to figure it out.
Harry Blaker is a bit of a curmudgeon; Maddie Ives is the wild card. I enjoyed the characters--who are both interesting-- more than the plot.

Detective Fiction. Nov. 20, 2018. Print length: 317 pages.
What a thrilling story! I was constantly trying to figure out what was going to happen next.
Told from a few different POVs, the story stays fresh and keeps you on edge.
Maggie is a wonderful and supremely smart detective. Her years of UC work has given her an edge most only dream of achieving while on the force.
I look forward to more books centered around Maggie Ivers.
What a story! I believed it from the first page! I wanted to scream; You do not know him! Do not get in the car! Then the Detective is Awesome, Harry! Why is Maddie supposed to be such a hot cop? I do not like her! She cannot take one week of being humbled! The point that gets left behind is; she could have saved one of those women! She said nothing to Harry about the new dog bowl, in a dilapidated building? Like; Why was it there, maybe a dog needs help, why would a possible dog be in there!? She needs an attitude adjustment! Because of her negligence, that woman died! Indeed well written, or I would not be so upset about that point! Full of action, police, crime, I loved the flow!
I Highly Recommend! Thank you Netgalley! Thank you, Mr. Gallagher! This is my first book of yours; it will not be my last!

What a great start to a new series! I was hooked from the first page. This was a very gripping novel which shows the author’s expertise in police procedurals. The characters were well defined and very realistic. I look forward to the next installment! Thanks to Joffre Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
OMG this book is another of my favourites for this year. I did not just read this book i DEVOURED IT.
I read this book in one sitting, a real page turner and one Hell of a rollercoaster ride of a crime thriller. I was hooked from the first page. It got my heart pumping and sat on the edge of my seat and the climax

The author wrote a thriller that started with a bang and just kept going! The twists kept coming, so I couldn't put it down. I cannot wait to read more from this author!
I was totally gripped by this book.
It is the first book featuring DS Maddie Ives and my very first book by Charlie Gallagher.
The story is realistic and believable and the investigating duo is well built.
The story itself is fast paced, filled with action and it is really well written. It simply takes you there through the different perspectives!
A very well spent time this weekend with this book.
