"Fifteen years ago Ellen Smith vanished from the woods near her small Welsh village. Never to be seen again.
Eight people were in the woods that night: eight splintered lives, eight people hiding a terrible secret. But who can remember the truth?"
This was a good read, but it has too many characters that are constantly being introduced, each bringing their own different thread to the story, which could get confusing in places. However I still give a solid four stars for this book and am happy to recommend it to others.
Unfortunately this book was not for me, it was a bit slower than I would like and it just didn't hold my attention. I am sure other people will love it!
This novel got off to a sluggish start and didn't pick up the pace until about the midway mark. The conclusion was pretty underwhelming. It's unfortunate, but the fact that I just finished a string of excellent books right before picking up this one may be the root cause of my negative opinion. It's also possible that I just didn't connect with this author's writing style, despite the fact that numerous readers have praised the book.
My impression was that there was nothing in particular about this book that set it apart from others. I found it difficult to connect with the characters in this middling suspense/thriller since there were far too many of them to dislike.
Omg wow this book is amazing it's full of twists and turns it will keep you up all night I really enjoyed this book
Such a great book. Makes for a wonderful read. I can not wait to read more from this author. I love books like this.
after careful consideration. I have decided to let this book go, it has been sitting on the shelf for a while and I just don't see myself picking this one up anytime soon
The first book I've read by this author and I was impressed. A tense psychological thriller, with relatable characters and satisfying plot.
I hate giving negative feedback on books I've read, but I honestly don't have many great things to say about this one. I give it a 2 simply because I finished it, though there were many points I thought this would be a DNF. The pacing was so slow. Also, the plot was all over the place. It seemed like the author was grasping at all these different ideas and never really developed them fully and it left me quite confused. Throughout the book this "game" is discussed, but the game is never really explained. It's just a bunch of adults who were childhood friends that just were not good people. None of the characters were likable to me. The author makes it feel like you should have compassion for the protagonist, Ava, but I just found her annoying. She was also completely unbelievable as a detective based on all the terrible decisions she made. The "reveal" at the end was not surprising, as I had pegged who it was toward the beginning of the book.
I received an ARC from HQ Digital publishing in exchange for an honest review.
My thoughts
Would I recommend it? Yes.
Would I read more by this author? Yes
This is the first time I've ever read anything by this author and already I want to check out her other book Glass Dolls, because while it was slow and took me a while to get into I actually like how the story was working it self out, because not once did I want to stop reading, though out the story it had me wondering who could be send the message to Ava, did they have anything to do with her friend's disappearance or something else. And who could be after her, there's a lot of characters in this story but they each have a part to play in the story and it some how works out really well in the end. And I think the reason it works is because of how intriguing and suspenseful it is and with all of those characters and everyone seems to be hiding something, Your caught up in the story itself, with that said I want to thank NetGalley thanks for letting me read and review it.
The plot concepts were all sound and could've led to an exciting, compelling read, but there were far too many ideas and they didn't all belong in the same book. It was also rather slow in terms of pacing, which didn't exactly help. It indeed had its moments, but they were far and few between and not enough to keep me interested in finding out what happened in the end. The writing was pretty decent, so I hope the authors next book is better than this turned out to be.
I had never before read anything from Daisy White so I was very excited to read this, It was an enjoyable read if a little predictable when it came to the identity of the sender of the messages. The story was good until then though. Ava, the lead protagonist is a detective. She is estranged from her son and hasn't seen him since he was a child but she hopes to reconnect with him when she return home to visit her dying ex husband. She returns home to mixed receptions. Some are happy to see her but others haven't forgotten events of the past when a friend of theirs went missing. Ellen Smith was among a group of friends the night she disappeared and she has never been seen again. Ava decides to investigate the occurrence herself. This was a good read. It was a slow starter but it was enjoyable and I would recommend it.
This book is really 2.5 stars. As a book centered about returning to your roots and a long held secret you would think it would be a more compelling read. While there are parts that creep up and are interesting this books reads way too long with too little pay off.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title.
I was looking for a captivating read and this one fit the bill perfectly. I found myself captured from the first chapter and quickly turning the pages. I stayed up way to late finishing this one. I will keep my eye out for more by this author.
This was an ok read. and the writing was really well thought out, however, I wasn't impressed with the "twisty" ending. I had hoped for something mind blowing as the cover suggested. In this genre, it has to stand out to be able to be called "twisty".
Thank you for my free ARC in exchange for my honest review.
All I can say is that this was an on the edge of your seat read. I liked this book a lot. It makes you think about how much will people remember you. Or like the dust In the wind that you will be forgotten
So many characters in the book led me to have a hard time keep everyone straight. Overall the thriller was 3 stars for me.
Ellen Smith vanished from her Welsh village. Eight people were there the night she disappeared, and Ellen was never seen again. What happened and why does everyone have a secret?
Ava was Ellen’s best friend and having all grown up, Ave is a detective in California. She decides to go back home and investigate the disappearance herself.
The story was good but with so many characters and so many people with motive, it was hard to keep track of everything. There were lots of twists and turns which I did enjoy.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author for allowing me to read and review.
For being touted as a thriller with a brilliant twist, it was kinda predictable for me. It wasn't a terrible read, but it could've been better. The mystery aspect as intriguing but it did have a slow start.
Unputdownable! A true page turning, suspenseful, mystery! Very engaging and full of mystery and we'll developed characters. Absolutely recommend!
Thank you Netgalley and HQ Digital for the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A very intriguing mystery and I definitely did not see the ending coming. I constantly changed my mind about characters. The characters were developed extremely well and the story was engaging and kept my focus right through to the end. A fantastic thriller.
I had really mixed thoughts on this thriller. While I really enjoyed the setting, I didn't find the mystery its self particularly engaging, and overall I found the story fairly predictable.
If you are looking for a thriller with a great setting the Welsh countryside, definitely check this one out.
