A cold case that has never been solved brings back a woman who is morning the loss of her father and trying to bring back his honor. The characters are remarkable and truly pull at your heartstrings. They move at a remarkable speed to get to the truth and bring love back into their lives.
Set in winter in British Columbia the descriptions make you feel and appreciate the cold, dark, beautiful landscape. Small town "knowledge" is so real and often so wrong but everyone knows everyone and everyone's business, or do they? Against that setting there are two intertwined, oh so much, stories set 20 years apart. Suicide, or is it, of a retired policeman still investigating cold cases, other accidents, or are they? Missing teenagers 20 years ago, survivors of that time now in their late 30s and having moved on, or have they? Current teenagers struggling to grow up in a dark world. The characters are well defined and the reader can empathise with their problems, some of them anyway. The two main characters are strong and apparently very different now, they have history, do they have future? The story keep the reader fully enthralled right to the end making it an engrossing read. Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Entertaining read. Great characters. Good plot and story. Kept you wanting to get back to it. Enjoyed this book.
A well written and entertaining thriller.
I was hooked since the first pages and I loved it.
I liked the style of writing, the fleshed out characters, and the setting.
The mystery was solid and it kept me guessing till the end.
I will surely read other books by this author.
Recommended.
Many thanks to Montlake Romance and Netgalley for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, all opinions are mine.
Absolutely fantastic, suspenseful murder mystery! This story had it all, two small town teens disappear 20 years ago and the mystery was never solved until now! A retired cop comes across new evidence and is killed because of it so his daughter Rebecca comes home and starts putting all of the clues together and has the case reopened. Those small towns where everyone knows everyone isn't always a good thing. It was so much fun putting the clues together with Rebecca and I've never rooted for a book couple more than her and Ash! This was a great book that peeled back the layers and kept me hooked right up until the fantastic ending! Thank you so much to Netgalley for allowing me to read an ARC. All opinions are my own.
This book is cleverly written. It’s a rather dark read, sort of haunting. The characters are richly detailed and my heart broke for a few of them. This book is swamped with emotion. I was fully engaged and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I received an advance review copy from NetGalley for an honest review.
An intriguing thriller. It will keep you hanging on for dear life until the last moment. Well written with interesting characters you can identify with, for yourself or someone you know. This is considered to be a "Dark Lure" book, however, you do not need to read the first novel- "A Dark Lure" in order to keep up with the story. They are considered stand-alone. However, the first is excellent and gives you a bit of a backstory.
This is a dark thriller with spine-tingling suspense and a second-chance romance. None of the characters are perfect, but they are memorable, which I love about Loreth Anne White's stories. This was a great read!
The Dark Bones is a brooding, atmospheric novel backdropped against the harsh wintry British Columbia landscape. Rebecca North is filled with regret for failing to return home until her father's suicide. When she does come back, it doesn't take long before she is questioning the circumstances of his death. She enters an uneasy truce with former lover Ash Haugen, who broke her teenaged heart. It isn't only their past that keeps her from fully trusting him--she knows he's harboring secrets. She just isn't sure whether those secrets will destroy them both.
Masterfully written, The Dark Bones grips the reader from the first page until the pulse-pounding conclusion.
Rebecca didn’t have time to talk with her father, Noah North, but she took his call and sluffed him off. He was drunk, again, and insisted he had to talk with her – in person. She dismissed his urgency and went about her work, which was urgent, more urgent than dropping everything and heading off to her father’s distant home. This mistake came back to haunt her when she arrived in Devil’s Butte almost a week later. Her father is dead, suicide they say, but Rebecca doesn’t buy it. He would never do that, she thought, but the circumstances seem compelling. Until, that is, she starts putting the pieces together herself.
Ash Haugen, Rebecca’s first love, was apparently the last person to see her father alive, but he is adamant that Noah was alive when he left the cabin and did not seem despondent or suicidal. Ash, too, believes there is more to the story and wants to help Rebecca get to the bottom of it. At the same time, he hopes he can rekindle her love for him.
You get to meet the town gossip, the do-nothing sheriff, a couple of teenagers who may have seen something, and other townsfolk who may or may not have the best interest of the truth in mind. An old mystery, too, has its place in the story of Devil’s Butte’s history when a couple of teenagers disappeared over 20 years ago. Is that somehow tied in with the death of Rebecca’s father? In the end, all the pieces fall into place but they may not fall where you expect them to. A good mystery with an ending that will surprise you.
Thank you, Net Galley, for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Received this in exchange for a review from Net Galley I did not know this was a series until I began reading and thought there was a lot of back story. But not a problem. This very good mystery stands alone.
I found this to be very well written, fast moving and beliveable
Police officer Rebecca has returned to her home in BC during the winter due to the alleged suicide of her father, but more witnesses and suspects start to come to light as Rebecca tries to figurer what old case her retired police officer dad was working on.
I could almost feel the cold as the narrative was so well done.
I will read more from this writer
I was unable to write a review on Amazon as the book has not been released
When Noah North calls his daughter Rebecca because he thinks someone is watching him and going through his things, she puts it down to his alcoholism and paranoia. Not shortly afterwards she finds herself back in her home town to bury Noah. The local police say it was suicide, but Rebecca can’t accept that her father really was so desperate, so lonely.
She decides to look into a cold case her father, a former police officer, was asking questions about and quickly finds herself confronting the reasons for leaving twenty years ago.
I love the (wo)man returns to former home town to solve mystery and face old demons trope so much. So, The Dark Bones is totally up my ally.
Rebecca’s home is in Cariboo Country in British Columbia, Canada and the story picks up in January. Everything is so cold, dark and bleak so it’s the perfect set-up for a crime-thriller. I love remote settings, in tiny town where everyone is somehow connected because it heightens the urgency of the plot. It is unclear who can be trusted, which old friend might be hiding a dark secret and if anyone outside of the tight knit community will help if anything happens to the protagonist.
What I really enjoyed was how Rebecca proceeded to investigate her father’s death and how realistic her methodises were. Many times, the characters in similar situations put themselves in unnecessary danger or over-estimate their capabilities. This of course adds to the suspense, but it was refreshing to see a character asking for help and trusting professionals to do their jobs.
The Dark Bones is the second book in the Dark Lure Series, something I only realised a few pages in. The first couple of chapters were difficult to get through because they alluded a lot to things that happened in the first book A Dark Lure. Twenty pages in I was unsure whether to continue and pick up the first book instead. But after having read the blurb for A Dark Lure I had a vague sense of what was going on and as the story progressed it didn’t matter that I had picked up The Dark Bones first. It can be read as a stand-alone.
Seeing as I really enjoyed the town Loreth Anne White described, the characters and the overall setting, I will be picking up the first book too. I’ll know the ending, but I still think I will enjoy it. Why? Because I enjoyed The Dark Bones even with a somewhat weak ending. I was disappointed because the story was leading up to a dramatic ending and what I got just wasn’t it.
But overall The Dark Bones was a solid crime-thriller that I enjoyed a lot and had problems putting down once I got the second half of the book.
Thank you Netgalley, Montlake Romance and Loreth Anne White for an Advance Reader’s Copy in exchange for an honest review.
Loreth Ann White always delivers an outstanding story. Rebecca is forced to return home when her father commits suicide. Or did he? That is the question that haunts her. So goes the mystery that ensues. A thrilling adventure with some surprising twists.
I was given this book for free for an honest review. I must say that I rarely rate a book with five stars but this one surely deserved it. The mystery kept on evolving throughout the book till the very last pages. I could not put the book down. The story between the main characters was a nice one too which was also intertwined in the big murder mystery.
I love mysteries and this book was great!
It kept me turning the pages and guessing to the end. Just wondering if this could be the start of a series?
The Dark Bones (Dark Lure #2) by Loreth Anne White, is a well written, complex story. At times it’s hard to decide who the actual victims are - in my opinion, they all are in some way. None of the characters are perfect; they all have their baggage but have learned to deal with it.
The author jumps from the present to the past and back again to set up the relationships between Ash, Becca, and Whitney. The past holds the key to actual crimes committed. The book is emotional, tugging on the reader’s feelings with trauma, physical abuse, inappropriate behavior, murder, deep & dark secrets, brief mention of rape and second chances.
The cast of characters is a bit large, including a few from the first book A Dark Lure. The primary characters are fully developed, allowing the reader to form opinions on how they play in the overall crimes, as well as likes & dislikes of them. The secondary characters mainly have supporting roles, in the overall storyline and help to tie things together.
I found the first 2/3’s of the book to be a bit slow, with all of the story and character building, even though there were sporadic action-packed scenes. The last third of the book is where all the magic happens; the secrets, reasons, forgiveness, and truth are all laid bare before the reader. I was really surprised by some of the truths, not even thinking they would be part of the story, but the author made it all make sense.
The book has a positive and happy for now ending, with no cliff hanger, but enough out there that it could easily be picked up for another book with many of the main characters from this book. I actually hope that we have an opportunity to see more of Becca, Ash, and Kibu in the future.
I wish to thank the author - Loreth Anne White, the publisher - Montlake Romance; and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader’s Copy for an honest review.
The book will be available in multiple formats on May 21, 2019.
For me this was a four out of five star read.
First time reading a book by this author, and it won't be the last! I did not realize this was a series book, going to go back and read the first installment. Loved the book! Sometimes you just got go follow your gut! Definitely going on my to buy author list! Great read, you will enjoy it.
This the first book by Loreth I have read. She writes in a way that keeps the reader wanting to know more. Her story is about Becca North and her father and a long lost love Ash. The story starts with Rebecca getting a phone call from her drunk father wanting to know why 20 years ago she and Ash lied. He is looking into a cold case and wants to finally solve the mystery of a couple of teenagers disapperance. Before Rebecca can call him back her father is killed so she rushes back to Canada to deal with the lose of her father. This story kept me wanting to read more as I felt like I got to know not just Rebecca and Ash but also Ricky, Olivia and Tori who each have their own backstory and important roles in this book. I look forward to reading more by Loreth if they are like this one
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I didn't realize this was the second book in a series, but I am certainly going back to read the first. These characters are solid. A really great mystery that you just don't see ending the way it did. Unputdownable!
The Dark Bones by Lorreth Anne White is the second book in the Dark Lure series. I read the Dark Lure several years ago and loved it! I was so excited to see a “sequel” of sorts. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I would recommend reading them in order. I feel that it’s more interesting to know the backstory and learn about the characters who are referenced in book two. Detective Rebecca North returns home to Canada after receiving a call telling her that her father is dead. The startling new does not sit well with her, and she starts her own investigation, which leads her to the last person to see her father alive. The storyline is fast paced with many twists along the way and I didn’t want to put it down! It has the perfect amount of mystery and suspense. Every book I had read from this author has been 5 stars! Highly recommend!
