The Second Wife is anything but predictable. In this tumultuous story by Sheryl Browne we get an inside look into the relationship of Nicole and her new husband, Richard. Nicole is struggling with her relationship with her husband's daughter... She keeps finding herself second guessing herself to see if she is actually crazy? After Nicole mysteriously passes away Nicole's best friend Rebecca starts second guessing her death and starts investigating... Richard doesn't seem to want to help... This book will keep you second guessing until the end.
The Second Wife was such a dark and twisted psychological thriller that will keep you utterly addicted, Sheryl Browne is definitely becoming one of my favourite authors, her writing is amazing, I enjoyed this book so much, it is definitely highly recommended..
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Beyond amazing I enjoyed this book so very much. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Could not put down nor did I want to.
I’ve read a few of Sheryl Browne’s books and always enjoyed them and loved her writing style so when I saw this book I just had to read it. I love a good psychological thriller and this one really spoke to me.
From the opening scene told by Nicole, you get a sense of what this woman had been though but nothing could have prepared me for the direction the story took. I had put some of the pieces together but I was so shocked at discovering what really happened to Nicole I sat open-mouthed for at least a minute.
The characters are all perfectly formed and realistic. There are those that you will love and those that you will hate and a few that you won’t be sure about, never knowing whether they should sit on the good or the bad side.
This is a book that will play with your emotions and set you off on an emotional roller coaster. Throughout you will feel sorrow, happiness, anger and bewilderment, all mixed into one. There are plenty of twists to the plot, enough to keep you gripped to the book and interested the whole way through.
If you love psychological thrillers you need to read this book, it is exceptional from the very beginning to the end.
Nicole and Rebecca had been best friends for years since the time they met in University. Even though they live far apart, they constantly write letters and text one another. So, it comes as quite a shock when Rebecca finds out that Nicole has committed suicide not long after marrying, Richard, the man of her dreams. While attending Nicole’s funeral, Rebecca could not help feeling a pull towards Richard and soon finds herself replacing Nicole in his home and in his bed, but is Richard and his daughter Olivia all they are cracked up to be or is something even more dangerous brewing on the horizon?
Sheryl Browne has written a taught, dark, and twisty read with The Second Wife. I found myself drawn into the storyline immediately and having a lot of mixed emotions from anger, to horror, to utter fascination as I read through this very disturbing story. I did have a few ideas running through my mind as to what was exactly going on, but I found that the twists really had me guessing until the truth slowly starts to reveal itself. I must say, Browne has a devious mind and I am now going to be moving up two of her books that have been on my TBR right to the front of my list - The Babyistter and The Affair. Browne has won me over and has become a new favorite author I will be stalking!
The story is told from multiple points of view as well as in the present and the past. I was never lost or confused as Browne did such a great job of making sure we, as readers, could distinguish every aspect of the story. I loved the back and forth between the present and past and felt it really built on the sense of urgency I had in figuring out what exactly was going on. The story is so dark and twisted that I could not help loving every minute of it. I guess that kinda makes me dark and twisted! Uh oh! I am innocent I swear!
Sheryl Browne created such vividly written characters that you can love and hate all in the same breath. I found this to be a quite refreshing as most of the time evil characters are just purely evil and you never really get to see some ounce of goodness in them. Don’t get me wrong, there are characters in this book that ARE evil, but you can see brief flashes that definitely make you feel sorry for them. So, I definitely felt that tug going back and forth which made all of the characters rather interesting for me.
The Second Wife is an intense, heart pounding story full of page turning twists that will leave you gasping and wanting even more. Such a brilliant story and one I wholeheartedly recommend.
YES! This was a riveting dark and twisted thriller that completely captivated me!
Sheryl Browne, you seriously blew my mind with this one! This book was darker, twistier, steamier, and more disturbing... hands-down my favorite book from this author thus far! Hold onto your hats and glasses for this one, it is a crazy ride!
Nicole and Rebecca are best friends, they share everything, but I bet they never thought they would share a husband! Nicole is still dealing with her past abusive marriage, even when she is married to the seemingly fabulous Richard... Nicole confesses everything to her BFF Rebecca, she tells her all about her loving husband and how happy they are... SO when Rebecca finds out that Nicole has committed suicide, she is determined to figure out what has really happened... Rebecca meets Richard and is instantly charmed, and before she knows it she has moved into her BFFs house and life... I know what you’re thinking... what? What kind of friend moves in on her deceased Bestie’s husband? Well apparently Rebecca, and I have to say I think this is all kinds of wrong, so shady, but still somehow I liked Rebecca?
The story is told from multiple points of view, and from both the present and the past.... we learn the truth of Nicole and Richard‘s marriage as the layers are slowly peeled away through Nicole’s eyes... we also get the present day story through the eyes of Rebecca, Olivia, and even Richard.... Olivia is richer’s 19-year-old daughter, the girl seriously disturbed me throughout this entire book... this was one strange father daughter dynamic! I really liked both Rebecca and Nicole, I was really conflicted sometimes because I didn’t necessarily agree with their actions, but I really found them both quite likable.... Richard, I am admittedly a bit of a man hater, so I was suspicious of him from page 1... * just to clarify I love my sons, my dad, my brothers, but I really have bad taste in men, so I’m not crazy about anyone that I previously had a relationship with! I’m a little jaded!* so what in the world is going on? Is Richard really a good guy or is it all an act? Is Olivia just a spoiled brat or pure evil? And what in the world is Nicole doing? At about 60% this book goes off the rails, starts zigging and zagging and bobbing and weaving... I had no idea what side was up? Oh what a dark disturbing deceitful journey this book took me on!
This was an intriguing, disturbing, dark, deceitful, twisted, and brilliant book! Absolutely recommend!
🎵🎵🎵 song running through my head! this is the first time I am going to use this song, but I can guarantee it won’t be my last, this is my go to crazy train book song! All aboard!🚂

Aye Aye Aye Aye Aye Aye...
Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
Maybe it's not too late
To learn how to love and forget how to hate
Mental wounds not healing
Life's a bitter shame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I've listened to preachers, I've listened to fools
I've watched all the dropouts who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you live the role
Mental wounds still screaming
Driving me insane
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I know that things are going wrong for me

Rated 4 stars on GoodReads
I had the privilege of being able to read The Second Wife by Sheryl Browne prior to its release thanks to @Netgalley. This book sends you on a roller coaster through many different points of view. Smoothly transitioning from Nicole’s life, to the lives of others after her funeral. You get to experience the world as Nicole did leading up to her death. While experiencing Rebecca’s attempts to console Nicole’s grieving husband, Richard.
What made me choose this book?
The cover definitely was appealing, a beautiful teal color with delicate butterflies. The description of the book was intriguing as well. And of course the genre- I can’t put down these thriller/mysteries lately!
What did I like about this book?
The flow of the book was great. I loved how it changed between Nicole and Rebecca’s points of view and followed their separate timelines. Nicole’s leading up to her death, Rebecca’s after. It definitely made for an enjoyable read. I like my mysteries to have an ending as well, which this did. Nothing makes me madder then reading through the entire book for the ending to be left to your own imagination.
What did I dislike about this book?
There honestly isn’t much to dislike about this book. It was a fast paced psychological thriller that kept your attention and kept you guessing until the very end. I guess if I had to chose it would be disliking a few characters, but honestly that helped the book as well. You love to hate some characters and you hate that you love some too.
Who would I recommend this book to?
Definitely recommend this book to fans of the genre, it keeps you on the edge of your seat with twists and turns throughout. This book would have a place in my library any day.
Full of twists and turns, The Second Wife is anything but predictable. In this unique story by Sheryl Browne we get an inside look into the relationship of Nicole and her new husband, Richard. Nicole finds herself struggling to balance her relationship with Richard and his adult daughter who after a traumatizing incident is now a permanent fixture in their marriage. Is she being unreasonable or is something not right? That is a question that Nicole's best friend, Rebecca finds herself asking as well. After Nicole's untimely death Rebecca seeks the answers to those questions, but will Richard end up being too much of a distraction? This book is a page turner with an ending that nobody will see coming.
Sheryl Browne has totally smashed it with her third Psychological thriller and brings us another page turner. Boy does this lady know how to write. Grabbing me from the very first page we follow a story that alternates mainly between Rebecca and Nicole the two main characters taking us on a journey between past and present. Building up a story that you won’t be able to put down. Talk about gripping and addictive each chapter leaves you wanting more….I couldn’t read this fast enough. The more I read the more I wanted to know. Love, love, loved it !!
This is a story that is full of twists and turns that will have you hooked. The author certainly knows how to build the tension up keeping you on your toes. Just when I thought I had worked it out the author throws in another twist…Yes this story has plenty of OMG moments where I found myself shouting at the book pulling me in every direction going!
With only a hand full of characters, some that you will love and not like but that’s all part of the story…read it for yourself and you will see what I mean. You can feel the emotion through the author’s superb writing skills. I actually think this would make a brilliant film.
Every book of Sheryl’s gets better and better with this being her best one yet. For me Sheryl is the queen of Psychological thrillers….Sheryl you absolutely rock.
I cannot recommend this book enough giving it all the stars.
Rebecca (Becky) is struggling to understand why Nicole, her long time friend, had committed suicide. Nicole’s second husband, Richard Gray, is at Nicole's gravesite along with his daughter, Olivia, age 22, whose mother also died of suicide. Nicole’s first husband had abused her and made her wary of men. She was an accomplished artist and her sudden death is a shock. When Nicole met Richard, they immediately fell in love and married. They then pooled their money and bought a huge house where Olivia lived with them.
Becky is a widow with a 20-year-old son and she lives in France. After selling her home in France for a good amount of money, Richard and Olivia invite her, plus her son and his girlfriend, to stay with them for awhile as she considers where she wants to buy another home. Curious to know more about the life that Nicole had with Richard and why she would take her life, Becky accepts their invitation.
As Becky gets to know Richard and Olivia, she sees how charming Richard is and understands how a woman could easily fall for him. But as she learns more about him, she’s not sure he is what he seems. Some things just don’t add up.
This is a good story with lots of promise, but I found there were some things that just did not add up. I cannot voice them here because that would be adding spoilers. I also find it rather pathetic that there are such gullible women out there that allow themselves to be manipulated like that. However, I suppose victims of abuse can be weak personalities that find it difficult to stand up for themselves. All in all, this is a good book that brings up some raw things about soulless people.
Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I enjoyed the Second Wife a lot. It had a lot of different character perspectives which were well written and had their own voices.
After her best friend, Nicole, commits suicide, Rebecca attends the service and there she meets Nicole's new husband and stepdaughter. Being out of the country and a single mother, Rebecca had been too busy to make it to the wedding a year before, although the two friends had stayed close by writing letters. Told from the perspective of Nicole, Richard, Rebecca, and Olivia the stepdaughter, there are many twists and turns that will keep you immersed in this book.
After previously reading and loving The Affair, I was looking forward to reading this next book by Sheryl Browne. I was not disappointed !!
Rebecca and Nicole are best friends but with Rebecca living in France and Nicole being in the UK they don’t get to see each other as much as they like. After an abusive first marriage Nicole has just met and married the man of her dreams, Richard but due to circumstances Rebecca hasn’t met him yet, although she knows all about him and his daughter, Olivia, from the texts, emails and letters that Nicole has sent her.
Suddenly out of the blue Rebecca hears from Richard that Nicole has committed suicide. What could have led her to this after finding the man of her dreams ? Nicole attends the funeral and meets Richard for the first time. She is intrigued by him and can see why her friend fell so deeply in love with him but she still can’t believe that her friend committed suicide.
Rebecca decides that she must find out the truth ? What really happened to Nicole ? What led to her death ?
This really is a truely suspense novel, that will keep you hooked until the very end. There are some fantastic characters that you will love and some you will just love to hate. A great book that will keep you up to the early hours !! I am already looking forward to Sheryl's next book.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
What a Fantastic Book The Second Wife By Sheryl Browne was. This is a book that will have you gripped from the first few pages and will leave you saying Good on You Girl at the end (well it did me)
It was very cleverly written throughout with lots of great twists and turns.
Richard. is a single parent to a 22 year old daughter called Olivia. Richard comes across charming, handsome, and a great catch for any lady! Nicole thinks she had found the perfect man and falls for his charms. Their relationship leads to Marriage and they all live in a beautiful house together. Nicole wants to be happily married, after leaving an abusive marriage before, but it doesn't last long................
A year later, Nicole commits suicide and Richard contacts her best friend Rebecca to inform her of the sad news about her friend. Nicole drowned herself whilst dealing with severe depression. Rebecca is finding this hard to believe that Nicole would take her own life. Rebecca goes to the funeral however and becomes close to Richard and Olivia and find out what happened and why!............
Rebecca re-reads all Nicole's messages, emails etc and then finds some letters written by her and begins to wonder if she knew Nicole at all.
Did Nicole commit suicide? If she did what lead her to kill herself?
What secrets was she keeping from all the people who knew and loved her?
Why didn't she contact Rebecca and ask for help?
As Rebecca gets closer and closer to Richard and Olivia, things go too far and she begins to relive Nicole’s old life – staying in her home, sleeping in her bed and having a relationship with him.
All the characters were great throughout this book and Richard is very charming......But don't be fooled! He has a very past side to him and things are not what they seem!
This is a Must read........Just Excellent!!!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
This was such a good read. From the beginning I felt tense, on the edge of my seat and on high alert, not trusting any of the characters. The prologue made me feel that way… I was judging each character from the start.
The story is told through each of the characters and flicks from the past (a year ago) to the present but the author states this clearly so there is no confusion for the reader. Brilliantly written and contains short chapters.
I felt so sorry for Nicoles character and what she had experienced. Rebecca is a fab character, loved her taking on the role of detective to find out what really happened to Nicole. However, at times I thought she lost herself and got too into the point of what she was doing.
Richards character is the perfect man in all ways. Or is he? I felt Olivia was a little manipulating, jealous, spoilt and spiteful girl… hmm.
A well deserved four stars. Highly recommend. Gripping. An unexpected OMG, jaw dropping outcome. Absolutely brilliant. Cleverly written. I enjoyed this one.. Very clever.
Wow!! What an extremely amazing and fast paced book this was. I loved The Second Wife. This was a very original plot, with characters that you liked and emphasized with. I liked how the author split the book between each character both past and present. I did not see the ending coming at all, it was a nice surprise and I couldn’t put the book down!
Thank you to Bookouture for approving me to read this book on Netgalley.
After recently reading "The Affair" by Sheryl Browne i was really pleased to read another phscological thriller by this author in such a short space of time. It did not dissapoint.
At the beginning of the story i sometimes go back to re read other chapter's to try coincide if mistakes had been made when writing this novel, little was i to know this was one of the great little twists in the plot.
The Characters are all likable, even the ones we are supposed to hate!! The only minor downside is i did guess how the main plot was going to unfold... Suffice to say this was only minor as there were plenty of other scenarios i didn't see coming and again thoroughly enjoyed this gripping, likable, twisty pyscological thriller. Read within the weekend, it was hard to put down!! Praise for Sheryl Browne on another excellent well written novel.
Wow. There are a lot of twists in this story. This is a really good thriller that kept me guessing throughout. Some of the characters were really unlikeable and to me that added to the suspense and fuelled my theories as to what the conclusion would be.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Nicole gets married for the second time having had very bad experiences in her first marriage. Her new husband Richard, has a daughter called Olivia and their marriage gets off to a bad start. Nicole confides with her best friend Rebecca and when tragedy strikes, Rebecca picks up the pieces in this psychological thriller.
I loved the format Sheryl has chosen for her novel. Each character has their own chapters where the story is told from their point of view. So this book progresses with alternating chapters as each character is skillfully developed. Nicole has an extensive backstory for the reader to take onboard and as you did into it, more and more doubts spring into your mind.
Sheryl has the gift of writing her novel in such a way that doubts easily but steadily form in your mind as you work through the pages. Time and time again you are forced to think “something is not right here”. There is a lot of tension in The Second Wife and you just hope nobody or either of the family pets get hurt.
Sheryl clearly understands the dynamics of marriage and the many challenges presented when taking on step children. It is fine for me now that the step children have left home but this book brought back very clearly memories of the early years of our marriage.
I found The Second Wife to be a very entertaining psychological thriller. Not only were the psychological games being played between the characters but Sheryl plays games with the readers’ mind too. There were hints of interesting sex to follow which was just cream on the cake with this OUTSTANDING read. The Second Wife gets the top score of 5 stars from me.
Really enjoyed this book, well written and a good twist towards the end. Unfortunately, it did seem quite far fetched in the plot and the character's credibility was questionable. That said, for a bit of escapism this book is very enjoyable.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I will definitely be reading more. The book starts off with a death, so it’s no waiting around. The book was faced paced, and I found myself flipping through the pages to see what happens next!! Nicole meets Richard, a seemingly ideal man, and after being in an abusive relationship, Nicole falls hard. She sells her home, etc and soon marries him. Richard seem to be polite, kind and in love with Nicole. But Richard has a manipulative teenager daughter Olivia, and problems began soon after her arrival. Nicole could not cope, and become deeply depressed, and took her own life. Her best friend, Rebecca, is shocked to learn of her best friend’s death, and becomes close to Richard after the funeral, trying to discover what could have driven Nicole to suicide. In the midst of it all, Rebecca finds herself falling for Richard, and into Nicole’s life! Scandalous!! But will she be able to free herself of the manipulative Richard? Will she see through him? The book is told in different points of view with each chapter, past, present, etc. I did get confused a few times, but maybe it was just me. The book has a bit of everything, lies, sex, manipulation, and death, so it was a thrilling read. Thanks so much to @Netgalley, and @Bookouture for giving me the chance to read this ARC. The book will be released on Jan 29th. I think anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers, will like this book!! I left a review on Goodreads, and Twitter @StefaniReads, BookBub, Instagram,@Bookedup22, and will also review on Amazon, once the book is released!! Thanks!!!!
