I was eagerly awaiting Penny Hancock’s next book as it seems such a long time since her last one and I was not disappointed.

Jules and Holly met and University and have been best friends ever since, so much so that when Holly’s husband dies she moves from London to live near Jules, her husband and daughter, Saffie in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Holly has a 16 year old son, Saul, and Jules daughter is 13. Both women look out for each other and their children, sharing love, laughter, tears and secrets.

However, all this changes when Saffie accuses Saul of a terrible crime.

Who will you believe, Saffie or Saul? Holly is adamant that her son is not guilty, Jules believes her daughter is telling the truth.

Penny Hancock deals with this subject sympathetically but at the same time she writes scrupulously of how events impact not only on the families concerned but also on the wider community. When Saul goes missing accusations start to fly and secrets come tumbling out.

This is an extremely thought out story of a friendship in jeopardy. I never knew whose side to take, as one minute the author was persuading me that Saffie was right to make these accusations against Saul and then I was thinking could he really have done this! The ending is brilliant, but also a true reflection of life.

I 100% recommend this book.

Great read. Really well written. Written with empathy and feeling. Two families are torn apart by accusations. This story is told from the perspective of both mothers and feels raw and real.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

This was an incredible book that I could not bear to put down.
A book that makes you question who to believe in a very difficult scenario.
Do you really know the people closest to you, can you really believe what they tell you.
The best book I've read in a while.
